Naturally, monumental expectations accompany the first Half-Life game in 13 years, and for the iconic franchise's return to come in the form of a VR exclusive is undoubtedly bold. But at each step of the way, Half-Life: Alyx proves that almost everything the franchise did best is elevated by VR: the environmental puzzles that require a keen eye, the threat of a headcrab jumping for your face, the cryptic storytelling. The series' staples are as great as ever here, and in its most powerful moments, Half-Life: Alyx confidently shows you why it couldn't have been done any other way. What's a day in the life of Alyx Vance? In true Half-Life form, the entire game goes from morning to night in a single shot of first-person action in which you, as Alyx, trek through the undergrounds and abandoned zones of City 17. At first, it's to save your dad Eli Vance from the clutches of the Combine. However, you're subsequently led to uncover the nature of that massive floating structure that hovers over City 17, referred to as the Vault. With a cheeky sidekick Russell in your ear, and a trusty, prophetic Vortigaunt who comes in clutch, Alyx is more than prepared. A basic premise for sure, but the journey is thrilling, and the payoff is immense. There's a newfound intimacy captured in doing the things that Half-Life always asked of you. Because it's a VR game, the way you look at and process your surroundings fundamentally changes, thus making the solutions to environmental puzzles more of a personal accomplishment than before. Simply finding the right objects to progress was fine with a keyboard and mouse, but when it's your own hands turning valves, moving junk to find critical items, pulling levers, or hitting switches while turning your head to see the results of your actions, these become enticing gameplay mechanics rather than means for breaking up the pace. Without waypoints or objective markers to guide you, subtle visual cues and calculated level design lead you to the solutions, and progress feels earned because of that.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

League of Legends developer Riot Games has made a donation of $1.5 million to various Los Angeles-based groups in an effort to aid coronavirus relief efforts. As reported by The Wrap, LA mayor Eric Garcetti announced at a press conference that Riot and its co-founders have donated more than $1 million, but it turns out the total figure is actually higher than what he suggested."We are blessed here in LA to have industries that not only fuel our city but our country and our world's economy. Gaming is one of those industries and one of the leaders in that space is Riot Games," said Garcetti. "They're based right here in our city, and today that company and its founders are donating more than $800,000 to local nonprofits including $200,000 to the Mayor's Fund to support whatever is needed for COVID-19 relief."According to The Wrap, Riot later clarified that the sum is actually $1.5 million, $500,000 from the company proper, and $500,000 each from Beck and Miller. $400,000 of the total will go to the Los Angeles Food Bank, and $200,000 will go to the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles, which goes to low-income or unemployed residents in need. The remainder will be given to LA non-profits.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

With supply chains globally reacting to the rapid spread of COVID-19, stock shortages of numerous goods are expected. If you're been tempted by the recent release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and planned on picking up a new Nintendo Switch, you might be out of luck already, as stock has become almost impossible to find. That is if you're looking to buy the original Nintendo Switch at its official, $300 retail price. It's difficult to find stock across the usual channels, including Amazon, Best Buy, and Ebay (though we're tracking where you can buy a Switch right now). The Nintendo Switch Lite, which retails for $200, isn't as scarce across all retailers, but is sold out on Amazon. Nintendo of America knows supply is short, and hopes to renew stock in the near future."Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the U.S., but more systems are on the way," Nintendo explained in a statement to GameSpot. "We apologize for any inconvenience."Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

There are plenty of choices for streaming services out there. Between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and others, you are probably paying a good amount of money for all these. However, there are plenty of free services--like Crackle--that offer up new content every single month. Here is what is coming to Crackle this April. While Crackle is free, it is ad-supported, meaning as the content you select plays, you're going to get some ads. There are 30-second and 90-second ad breaks scattered throughout the movies and TV shows, but it's a free service. Additionally, there is original and exclusive content on the service as well. The coolest exclusive for the upcoming month is the documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien. The film takes an in-depth look at the film that redefined science fiction. This includes adapting the artwork of H.R. Giger and director Ridley Scott's vision for the film. Check out the trailer for the film below.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Two days after release, Valve has updated its VR hit Half-Life: Alyx with enhanced movement options. You can now use an analog stick to turn your perspective smoothly, as in most first-person games, a feature the game calls a Continuous Turn. As before the patch, you have the option of using the analog stick to turn in the direction you were already facing by a fixed number of degrees, which the game now calls a Snap Turn. Previously, it was known as a Quick Turn.In this new setup, you can choose either to keep the Snap Turn or to change it to a Continuous Turn. If you choose the latter option, you can adjust the speed of the turn. You can also fiddle with the distance of the Snap Turn, or choose to turn off controller turning entirely. The patch added some minor improvements, including its detection of quality settings on some PCs. For more on the game's motion settings, check out our guide to Half-Life: Alyx's accessibility options. In our review, our critic Michael Higham called Half-Life: Alyx a triumph. "Yes, this game is somewhat of a companion piece to mainline Half-Life games, taking place five years before Half-Life 2, but that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Disappointment you may have felt in its 13-year hiatus will feel like water under the bridge, and in a way, have played into just how powerful Half-Life: Alyx turned out to be. The names, the faces, the iconic objects that have become synonymous with Half-Life have their specific place. And if you weren't aware previously, you'll see just how important Alyx Vance--the series' most infallible personality--has been the entire time."Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The event will now end on Thursday, April 2 instead of the originally planned March 27.CORRECTION: We’re extending this mini-event to Thursday, April 2 so that everyone who hits the new level cap increase can take advantage of this Takedown loot bounty! https://t.co/trfDdWmPKX — Borderlands 3 (@Borderlands) March 24, 2020Takedown Shakedown sees the bosses in the Maliwan Blacksite, the location from 2019's Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite event, dropping more loot than usual. Gearbox said this special event is to provide some solace for those "stuck at home and looking for something fun to do in the here and now" while practicing social distancing. (We've compiled some of the best games to play while stuck at home during these times.) The studio also said it will be "rolling out a series of similar mini-events in the coming weeks."According to Gearbox, Takedown Shakedown is specifically targeted at endgame users as only those who have finished Borderlands 3's main story campaign can access the endgame challenge. While Takedown's difficulty will scale depending on the size of your party, Gearbox said the event is really intended for "max-level characters with powerful gear."Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Ninja Theory's new melee-focused action game, Bleeding Edge, is now out on Xbox One and PC. If you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, the game comes included in the service on both platforms. At first glance, Bleeding Edge looks like it may resemble plenty of the character-based multiplayer games that have released in recent years (like Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends). However, the game has a lot of similarities to multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games too, so there is a bit of a steep learning curve at the start.Once you overcome that hump, though, Bleeding Edge can be a great game to play with your friends if y'all have nothing to do and are stuck inside all day. In the following article, we go over some tips to help improve your chances at succeeding in Bleeding Edge.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

As retailers respond to increased demand for online goods due to the coronavirus, many items are starting to sell out on Amazon, Walmart, and other retail websites. While certainly not as crucial as hand sanitizer, tissues, toilet paper, and other household goods running low on Amazon, the Nintendo Switch is also seeing a major shortage right now, with stock for the main console sold out nearly everywhere online. The $300 console is seeing increased demand as more people find themselves stuck indoors. Nintendo's massively popular first-party game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, also just released on March 20.While the main system is sold out basically everywhere, you'll have an easier time finding the Nintendo Switch Lite, which is smaller, handheld-only, and more affordable. Amazon is nearly out of stock for both systems, but other stores like Best Buy and Target still have the Switch Lite selling for $200. If you're primarily interested in using the Switch as a handheld device rather than playing it on the TV, the Switch Lite is an excellent option that'll cost you less money, and it may be a great option for younger gamers who are stuck inside right now.According to Nintendo, more Switch consoles will be restocked soon. "Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the US, but more systems are on the way. We apologize for any inconvenience," Nintendo told GameSpot in an email statement.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

In celebration of Half-Life: Alyx's launch, developers Evil Empire and Motion Twin dropped a new Dead Cells PC update that includes some direct references to Valve's first-person shooter. We've compiled the patch notes below.Half-Life: Alyx seems like the bomb!!! So... Especially if you're playing on a harder difficulty, Doom Eternal's enemies are quite intimidating. Anything more than the lowliest of demons can often prove too much to stand toe-to-toe with, ensuring you stay on the move at all times. Eventually, a unique challenge appears in the form of the Marauder, who won't hesitate to kick your ass. It's great.Partway into the game, you're confronted with a showdown against the Marauder. The encounter feels like a one-off boss fight, both because of the preceding cutscene and because the way in which you deal with a Marauder is quite unlike anything else in the game. You can't blast away or otherwise use standard tactics, as you can read about in our guide to beating the Marauder. The tutorial window that pops up before this fight unfortunately gives away both the basic strategies (seriously, turn these tutorials off) and the fact that this isn't likely the only Marauder you'll face, but it's a memorable encounter nonetheless. Marauders carry a shield that effectively deflects any damage, and they'll switch up which attacks they use depending on how close you are; they also periodically summon a wolf companion to flank you and generally keep you from devoting 100% of your attention to the Marauder.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com
