The latest Nintendo Switch firmware update is available now. Gears Tactics, the next game in the Gears of War series, releases on April 28 for PC (and later on Xbox One). The tactical spin-off is set before the first Gears game, but will link up with the narrative in Gears 5, as the main character, Gabe Diaz, is the father of Kait Diaz. Now, in an interview with IGN, Gears Tactics' narrative director Jean Mah has talked about expanding the world of Gears, and hinted at plans that will take the series beyond its current cast and family bloodlines.Mah tells IGN that the team at The Coalition (which took over the Gears franchise after Gears of War: Judgment) is aware of the difficulties of continually upping the stakes, and believes that compelling protagonists are the answer. "For our stories to resonate with our players, we need them to be able to not identify, but feel like they can care about and get involved with the main character," she says. "I think for a lot of stories, the trouble with having giant stakes of saving the world is that: how do you top that every single time? It's about putting a spin on that giant pile of stakes that you're trying to deal with, by making it personal to the protagonist."At the same time, she says, "sometimes we worry everyone in our universe is related to each other." But Mah believes that it's important to keep coming back to touchpoints that connect stories, such as "sharing a history in a certain battle." Sean Astin's Lord of the Rings character, Sam, gave one of the more memorable speeches in the entire trilogy at the end of The Two Towers. With its hopeful themes, it's one of the franchise's most-quoted speeches, and now Astin has performed it again amid the COVID-19 crisis.Astin delivered the lines again for an appearance on the Cameo platform. Stationed at her partner's abandoned lab and equipped with an AI-controlled diving suit, Vas explores the depths in search of answers. In a disarming inversion of the typical human-AI relationship, you play the AI; Vas sets the objectives, often conferring with you, but it's your job to plot her course, gather samples, and run tests back in the lab.The setup allows Vas room to breathe as a character. As you guide her maritime expedition, she provides intermittent narration. She pauses to marvel at new sights, thinks out loud as she works through possible theories, and occasionally confides in you her doubts and fears. Conversation may be sparse, and your ability to respond is limited to the odd yes or no answer, yet it's perhaps all the more affecting because of it. The two of you are strangers at the outset, but Vas' wariness at revealing her innermost thoughts to an AI gradually washes away as she realises, despite your reticence, that you understand her predicament--in the process unearthing a memorably multi-layered character. Saturday Night Live has been on hiatus for several weeks due to the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic, but the show returned on April 11 for a special remote episode hosted by Tom Hanks. Actors were confined to their homes, and Mikey Day made the most of it with a Twitch stream sketch featuring a very poor Call of Duty: Warzone player.In the sketch, insufferable content creator "Cam Playz Dat" says he's playing the new Warzone game, but actually begins a game of free-for-all in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. There is little time for those unfamiliar to discern this as he's shot roughly one second into the match.Cam Playz Dat criticizes anyone sniping by his respawn location, which is a tactic commonly used by Twitch viewers in order to kill streamers. Of course, this isn't the reason he's dying so quickly.
