Think Counter-Strike with hero elements. That's the elevator pitch for Valorant, Riot Games' debut on the competitive first-person shooter scene. I say that not to disparage Valorant, though. In fact, that's what I love most about it, especially since it executes on the formula extremely well. Valorant thrives because of tight, tactical gameplay and a mix of character-based abilities that provide a necessary strategic layer. Although it's a slim package with limited features and barren presentation, Valorant has the potential to be great. The core mode of Valorant revolves around five-on-five matches in a best of 25 rounds with two teams of attackers and defenders of bomb sites, switching sides about halfway through. The stakes are high as everyone gets only one life per round, and the focus on precise gunplay with low time-to-kill leaves little margin for error. Teams must account for buying guns, armor, and ability charges based on money allocated (depending on performance) on a per-round basis. In turn, each round maintains a high level of intensity as the tide of advantage can shift at any moment.Agents introduce an essential X-factor to the mix with their unique abilities as well. While it's easy to compare them to heroes/classes from other games, Valorant's Agent abilities function more like gear in a loadout. Two are subject to limited uses per round (but thankfully carry over even if you're killed) while a default ability subject to cooldown or replenish upon kills. Knowing how and when to execute these abilities, including Ultimates that can come in clutch, is key especially for highly competitive matches.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Editor's note: Due to embargo restrictions around spoilers, parts of this review are intentionally vague. We've done our best to explain certain parts of the game and our critique without discussing any story spoilers; however, if you want to understand the full context of some of our analysis here, we'll have another review up when The Last of Us Part II is officially out that discusses the story in greater detail and further explains our thoughts. This review will have the same score and will just serve as a deeper, more detailed analysis for those who want to read more.At the beginning of The Last of Us Part II, you get a glimpse of Ellie's life in idyllic Jackson, Wyoming. If it weren't for the walls surrounding the town, you could almost forget that the world is crawling with infectious monsters that would kill everyone in sight; its main road, blanketed in snow, is a charming row of old buildings with decks for sidewalks, more Old West town than post-apocalypse settlement. Its residents grow food, care for horses, tend bars, and even have dances and movie nights. Four years after Joel saved (kidnapped?) Ellie from the Firefly hospital, this is the life he wanted for her.The Last of Us Part II grapples with Joel's decision not through Joel, but through Ellie. This life is clearly not enough for her; she's distant and brooding, obviously conflicted about something. She's changed a lot. And when everything falls apart and she sets out in search of vengeance, you see her pain in its rawest, most brutal form. It's a devastating, gruesome story of revenge in which the purpose of violence gets muddied by its intensity. But as a character study, The Last of Us Part II is beautiful and haunting, and I found myself completely overwhelmed by the emotional weight of it.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Revealed at GamesCom 2019, Ghostrunner made a big splash with its vibrant, slick cyberpunk aesthetic and fast gameplay. Blending the style and tone of games like Cyberpunk 2077, Hotline Miami, and Mirror's Edge, it puts you in the role of a resurrected warrior known as the Ghostrunner. The protagonist must navigate a dystopian far-future city to learn more about his past and gain the strength to fight the ruler, known only as The Keymaster.Coming from developers One More Level Games, 3D Realms, and Slipgate Ironworks, Ghostrunner is an incredibly stylish action game set in a cyberpunk dystopia. In the newly revealed gameplay trailer, we saw the reveal of gameplay set in cyberspace, along with some new foes who can use tactics to get the jump on the Ghostrunner. Before the reveal, I got the chance to dive into a new preview build of the game, which showed off the increased scope of the game. With the means to travel between the real world and cyberspace, the protagonist also possesses some fast moves and killer attacks. He's incredibly skilled in the ways of combat, yet the trade-off is that he's also incredibly vulnerable. In a similar vein to Hotline Miami, you can die in one hit, which will send you back to previous checkpoints in each stage. To play Ghostrunner is to always stay on guard while maneuvering throughout the levels. Yet, there's a certain grace in how you're able to dodge enemy bullets, wall-run to your target, and pull of chain attacks against groups of enemies. Blending platforming and fast hack-and-slash gameplay, Ghostrunner presents each battle as a combat puzzle, where you'll need to figure out the most efficient and quick way to dispatch the enemies in the arena.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

New consoles are always expensive, and this trend is expected to continue with the release of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this year. But it might not be the only next-gen system Microsoft will offer. A popular and enduring rumor is that Microsoft will also release a lower-spec, less-expensive model aimed at the more mass-market audience known by the codename Lockhart. This is a great idea--and it's a much more interesting topic to consider now that Sony has revealed its own second, presumably less expensive digital-only PS5. In fact, the name of Microsoft's next-gen console strategy is officially just called "Xbox," and the "Series X" label is the specific model name. You can think of this like the iPhone--there's the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE, and iPhone XR that all live under the iPhone umbrella. For Xbox, I don't see the announcement of a cheaper next-gen Xbox as a matter of if but when. Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot that it might release additional next-gen Xbox SKUs, and I'm betting Lockhart is one of them. "Obviously, in the name 'Series X,' it gives us freedom to do other things with that name so that we can create descriptors when we need to," Spencer said in December 2019, all but confirming multiple next-gen Xbox consoles are coming.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Rock of Ages developer Ace Team has unveiled their new game, The Eternal Cylinder, as part of The Guerrilla Collective showcase. It's a open-world survival game set on an alien planet, and you'll play as a herd of creatures (called Trebhums) that need to survive not only the other creatures you'll encounter, but also a giant rolling cylinder that pops up and rolls right through the game world. There are shades of Maxis' Spore here, as you have to grow and evolve over the course of the game to deal with the harsh procedurally-generated environments you encounter. While you'll be weak to begin with, the creatures you're controlling will gain new abilities and ways to adapt as you play, and will mutate in a way that grants them new skills. The game will feature real-time environmental destruction, so when the Cylinder rolls over a tree, for instance, it will stay broken. The game is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store later this year, and it's designed so that if you play through more than once you'll have a different experience each time. The debut trailer is below.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

If collecting vinyl toys is up your alley, then you're going to want to keep an eye out for Blankos Block Party. The debut title of developer Mythical, it's a self-described "party MMO" that will let you hang out with friends and crate levels in a colorful, arcade-style world. Blankos Block Party was announced during the PC Gaming Show and flexed a bunch of ways that players and friends could dig into the game's massive multiplayer universe. Players will be able to race against each other, take part in team-shooter-type activities, enjoy a bunch of minigames, and even create their own levels that can then be shared with the game's community. Microsoft has filed a new trademark application for "Xbox Series," which has sparked renewed speculation that the company is planning to release at least one more next-generation Xbox this year. The trademark application, which was first reported on by WindowsCentral, can be seen here at the United States Patent & Trademark Office website. The application is for a game console, and the trademark drawing can be seen below. This new trademark filing renews the speculation that Microsoft will release another next-generation Xbox alongside the Xbox Series X, which is Microsoft's most powerful console.
