Alex Garland has garnered himself quite the reputation for sci-fi and horror fans with his dense and philosophical projects like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and this year's Devs, his first foray into the world of serialized storytelling with FX on Hulu. Themes in Garland's work tend to deal with things that provoke a certain sense of existential dread, like the nature of mortality and the ethics of artificial intelligence, so it's really no surprise that the writer/director's favorite video games tend towards the similarly weighty.Speaking with GameSpot during the Play for All event, Garland spoke at length about his love for games like The Last Of Us and Dark Souls, the latter of which he managed to sneak in an Easter Egg for during an early episode of Devs. But he also came through with a surprise revelation--he's a devout Animal Crossing fan and has sunk countless hours into perfecting his island, a hobby he's picked up alongside his daughter who also plays.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Shawn Layden, the former boss of PlayStation, has weighed in with his thoughts on the state of the AAA games business, and he thinks it's unsustainable. Speaking at the Gamelab Live conference, as reported by GI.biz, Layden said the commonly held idea that the cost of game development will double every new generation cannot continue."The problem with that model is it's just not sustainable," he said.Layden recalled the days when the world's biggest video games were developed on budgets of around $1 million. Now, the cost of most AAA games is between $80 million and $150 million, he said, and that's before marketing expenses are factored in.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The Lego Ideas initiative, which accepts and eventually creates and sells ideas crafted by Lego enthusiasts outside the company, has unveiled the results of a recent review of entries, and has selected three new sets. They comprise a great-looking Lego typewriter, a recreation of Jerry Seinfeld's apartment from the 90s sitcom Seinfeld, and a replica of the McCallister home from 1990's Home Alone. The Seinfeld set, which includes Jerry, George, Elaine, Kramer, and Newman mini-figs, recreates Jerry's apartment--keeping in mind that the apartment was only ever a set, which this set certainly feels like. It's a pretty spot-on recreation, although it remains to be seen whether minifig Kramer will be able to slide effortlessly through the front door. The Seinfeld apartment (none of the designs in this article are finalized)The McCallister House is another 90s throwback, and it could make a great Christmas present for any nostalgic 90s kid. It's unclear whether or not there are any booby-traps inside. The McCallister House Lego setThe typewriter is not a pop-culture touchstone, but that doesn't make it any less cool. You could pretend it's the typewriter from The Shining, of course, although the paper doesn't have any writing on it. Check it out below.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

The Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher Nolan is back with a new blockbuster movie, Tenet, that's coming to theatres--yes, theatres--at the end of July. Very little is known about the plot beyond that it will incorporate some element of time manipulation. Star Robert Pattinson has now shared a little more insight, but he's really just adding to the mystery and intrigue around the film.Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Pattinson said it was difficult to get his head around the script and understand what kind of a movie Tenet is."You really think it's going to be a particular type of genre, then it expands into something else and you're like, 'Oh, okay, this is kind of where we're at,'" he said. "Then it just completely morphs into an entirely different genre, which is very, very unexpected."Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

While definitely not the biggest surprise of last week's Pokemon Presents livestream, the announcement of Pokemon Cafe Mix was an unexpected addition. The free-to-play puzzle game was announced for both Switch and mobile devices, but the most surprising part was the release date: it's available to play now (on Switch, at least). The puzzle game revolves around a cafe where Pokemon visit, and to serve your customers you need to clear rows of Pokemon icons by dragging like types together. Finishing puzzles will increase your friendship rating with Pokemon, leading to cafe upgrades and new customers. If you're playing on Switch, the game must be played in handheld mode with the touch screen. The same livestream that debuted Cafe Mix also announced a new Pokemon Snap, a toothbrushing app called Pokemon Smile to encourage good dental hygiene habits, and in-game events for Pokemon Sword and Shield and Pokemon Go. It also coincided with the release of the Isle of Armor, the first expansion DLC for Sword and Shield. The game is playable right now on Switch; it would not let us download off the Australian App Store on iOS just yet. We'll keep an eye on the situation and update once it's available on mobile too. Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com
