The Playdate console was announced last year, and it looked very interesting--a small handheld with inbuilt games, a black-and-white screen, and a hand crank that some developers will use as a control mechanism. Over a year later, we've only gotten minor updates, but today the Playdate Twitter account has dropped previews of some of the games external developers are working on, with a promise of more news to come.About 250 people around the world have their hands on development kits, the Twitter account says, and it wants to show off some of their work. It's worth noting, though, that not all of these games will necessarily ship with the Playdate--they could end up as experiments that don't release, or might just not make it into the system's first season of content. The first game is Down the Oubliette by Rebecca König, whose previous work includes the world's smallest version of Tetris.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

3D Realms is best-known for Duke Nukem's successful run of games in the '90s, including Duke Nukem 3D, one of the landmark games in the FPS genre. Other studios will share new game announcements as part of the event, including several that aren't listed here. Realms Deep will run from 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET to 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET on September 5 and 6, and a sale on 3D Realms games on Steam will accompany it from September 3 to 7.According to a press release, both 3D Realms and 1C Entertainment will reveal new games at the event, including a dark-fantasy FPS that is likely in the vein of Heretic, Hexen, and the recent Amid Evil. A drastic, dramatic re-interpretation of the popular '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is currently in the works and being shopped to streaming networks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tentatively titled BEL-AIR, the new series recasts the familiar, previous story about a West Philadelphia teenager sent to live with his wealthy family in the upscale neighborhood of Bel Air, Los Angeles, after a confrontation with some gang members -- only this time around, that same story will be approached as a drama, rather than a comedy, and to reflect today's contemporary climate and setting. The concept originated from a four-minute viral clip that was originally posted in March 2019 by Kansas City filmmaker Morgan Cooper. The clip, which you can watch below, quickly picked up steam and turned out to be a breakthrough video for Cooper, who is now collaborating with Will Smith on the series. (You can watch a longer, nine-minute video from Smith offering his feelings and reactions to the clip here.)Original series producers Smith, Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, as well as creators Andy and Susan Borowitz are reportedly set to return as executive producers. Chris Collins (The Wire, Crash) will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and is set to co-write the script with Cooper.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Loot boxes are in almost every major game these days, but they remain one of the most controversial topics in the space. New research from CQUniversity in Australia suggests that there's a correlation between players who purchase loot boxes and those who experience more serious gambling problems. The study, which analyzed the behavior of nearly 2000 people, revealed that 69.4% of the research group had opened a loot box in a game in the last year. However, only 32.9% said that they had purchased a loot box in that same time period, meaning that a large percentage of players merely open the ones the game gives them through regular play. The study found that this latter group-- those respondents who had purchased one or more loot boxes--were more likely to engage in other forms of gambling, gamble more frequently, and suffer from a gambling compulsion.“For both young adults and adolescents, there was a strong association between current loot box use and gambling risk," a portion of the study reads. "Consequently, although median expenditure on loot boxes is modest, there is evidence that these products are associated with harmful gambling involvement.”Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com

Smite's newest hero, The God of the Moon Tsukuyomi, arrives today in the game's 7.8 update. This Assassin class character was revealed this past July in a brief cinematic trailer, and is both the MOBA's 111th playable character and the seventh god hailing from the Japanese pantheon. While Tsukuyomi's IRL lore is a bit scant, the Smite devs have focused their energy on keeping his personality in line with how he was depicted in mythology. Tsukuyomi is a proponent of proper etiquette, obeying authority, and maintaining order, and he takes slights very seriously. He is imperious, and his dispensing of swift and extreme punishment for perceived disrespect is a core part of his character. Him killing food goddess Uke Mochi over a perceived slight even contributed to his falling out with his sun goddess sister, Amaterasu.Continue Reading at GameSpotInfo from Gamespot.com
