We have known for a while now that Bethesda's Fallout 76, like many games today, will feature a microtransaction system. Bethesda was quick to clarify that you won't be able to spend real money on Perk Cards to unlock more abilities, with the microtransaction system instead limited to cosmetics. Now, Bethesda has shared more details on how microtransactions work in Fallout 76.The microtransaction currency in Fallout 76 is called Atoms, Bethesda boss Pete Hines told Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. These Atoms can be spent on things like new outfits and skins. You can earn these Atoms in the game by completing tasks, or you can buy them outright with real money. Bethesda hasn't said yet provided any specifics on Atom pricing, however.Whatever the case, Hines suggested Bethesda will be generous with Atoms, telling Major Nelson that Fallout 76 will "throw them at you all the time.""Atoms are thing that we use and hand out as you play the game--quite honestly we throw them at you all the time," he explained. "You get them as little rewards leaving the Vault or the first time you kill a creature or the first time you pick fruits or vegetables from somewhere. It's a little challenge reward. Atoms are used in our shop to buy cosmetics things. So you know, new outfits or skins or things like that. [Things to customise] your character to look unique from everybody else."Everyone who pre-orders Fallout 76 on Xbox One gets 500 Atoms right away, but how much value this really offers won't be clear until Bethesda reveals the cost of in-game items. Microsoft's partnership with Bethesda goes further, as the company is also releasing a 1 TB Xbox One X bundle that comes with a copy of Fallout 76.It appears Bethesda is following the model of games like Overwatch and Fortnite in that it will only allow players to spend real money on cosmetics, not items or abilities that actually affect the game. After Bethesda announced that perks in Fallout 76 are acquired and represented through Perk Cards, many wondered if players would be able to buy these with real money. Thankfully, as mentioned above, Bethesda will not allow players to spend real money to acquire new perks. For lots more on Fallout 76, you can check out the video embedded above and GameSpot's recent coverage in the stories linked below. Fallout 76, like previous games in Bethesda's franchise, will feature mods, but how will they work with the game's new always-online, multiplayer focus? We chatted with Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines recently, and he told us that mods in Fallout 76 will only run on private servers."Mod support is going to be tied to work that we're also doing on private servers, and letting people do private servers. Mods will be a thing that run on private servers," he said.Hines said it's unlikely Bethesda will ever allow mods to run on Fallout 76's 24-player public servers. Mods are user-created modifications that are capable of doing pretty much anything people can think up, so it makes sense that Bethesda wants to restrict them to private servers to help ensure a semblance of fairness. "I don't foresee a universe in which we allow players to come in [to Fallout 76's public servers] with their own unique and different mods. If you want to run mods, they'll have to be done on a private server," Hines explained. "You'll be deciding what sort of mods you're including and running, and everyone playing on that server is playing with those mods."Mods aren't coming to Fallout 76 at launch, however. Hines cautioned that mods may not be supported in Fallout 76 until November 2019 at the soonest. "It's going to be a lot of work. But mods and private servers are definitely coming," Hines said.Mods in Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim have been and continue to exceptionally popular and helping contribute to the longevity of those games and others across the industry. Those games, however, are exclusively single-player experiences, whereas Fallout 76 is always-online.Fallout 4 and Skyrim initially only supported mods on PC, but they later came to PS4 and Xbox One, albeit with some limitations. It remains to be seen if Fallout 76 mods will launch first on PC. GameSpot recently had the opportunity to play three hours of Fallout 76. The hype surrounding Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to grow as its PS4 and Xbox One release date gets closer, and now the game's protagonist, Arthur Morgan, is getting a shout out from an unlikely corner of the Wild West. Techland Games, which developed Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, has published a video with the game's main characters Silas Greaves addressing Morgan."The Old West is full of legends. And you, Arthur Morgan, soon will be one of the greatest, I'm sure," Greaves says in the video above. "Because legends, you know, never die. They change to come back stronger than ever."It's unclear what the bigger meaning of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger's video is, as no new Call of Juarez game has been announced and the video appears to piggyback on the hype of Red Dead Redemption 2. Before the video was released, the tease began on Call of Juarez: Gunslinger's Facebook page, which hadn't been updated in over five years. The game's Facebook page added a banner of Silas Greaves with the tagline "Legends never die." Another image on the page showed Greaves standing over the same canyon seen in the video with the quote, "I haven't been here in many years. Name's Silas Greaves."This year, Techland bought back bought back the rights to Call of Juarez from Ubisoft. The company hasn't said anything about bringing the series back to life, but this latest messaging suggests the possibility of a remaster of Gunslinger being announced soon. Gunslinger was the fourth entry in the series, preceded by Call of Juarez, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, and Call of Juarez: The Cartel (which was the only game in the series to take place in modern times).Red Dead Redemption 2, on the other hand, launches on October 26 and is expected to be one of the year's biggest releases, with sales projections of more than 15 million copies. GameSpot recently got to play through the first five hours of the game and experience its vast open-world; for more details you can check out GameSpot's first impressions of Red Dead Redemption 2. Not long after being fired from his role on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, director James Gunn has found himself with a job at Marvel rival DC. Gunn has been confirmed as the writer of a new Suicide Squad movie, and shortly after the news broke, one of his Guardians stars has expressed interest in working on the film.Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Guardians series, tweeted an article about Gunn's new role. He stated simply: "Where do I sign up!" Just who he could play is anyone's guess, though King Shark is a popular idea among some here at GameSpot. It's possible Bautista was only expressing interest in watching the movie, but he has been extremely supportive of Gunn since Disney fired him over tweets from a decade ago. While the full cast of stars released a letter in support of Gunn, Bautista has been particularly outspoken on the subject. He's even said he wants to be let out of his contract if Gunn's Guardians 3 script isn't ultimately used.Where do I sign up! James Gunn Boards ‘Suicide Squad 2’ To Write And Possibly Direct – Deadline https://t.co/OwdDbAm1Ks — Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) October 9, 2018Guardians 3 was set to begin production early next year ahead of a 2020 release, but the movie has been put on hold indefinitely, according to previous statements from Bautista. Gunn, meanwhile, just saw his new horror movie delayed. There's no word yet on what the new Suicide Squad will look like, nor whether it will be a direct sequel to the maligned 2016 film. It was at least previously set to be directed by The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor, although an io9 report suggests Gunn could direct the movie in addition to writing it. Info from Gamespot.com

Update: When reached for comment, Warner Bros. told GameSpot, "It is confirmed that James Gunn is writing the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise." That means it's no longer a possibility, but Gunn has indeed signed on to write the next Suicide Squad movie. It remains to be seen whether he will also direct the project, though it was reported that is a distinct possibility. Furthermore, Guardians star Dave Bautista has seemingly expressed interest in starring in Gunn's new movie. Just what role he'd play (or if this was even his intention) remains to be seen, but Bautista has been a vocal supporter of Gunn since Disney fired him. The original story follows. It looks like Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has found his rebound relationship after being dumped by Marvel Studios. It's being reported that Gunn is in talks to jump to Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, where he would write and possibly direct the next Suicide Squad movie. The news comes from io9, which is reporting that Warner Bros. has confirmed discussions with Gunn. The plan, at this point, is for him to write the sequel "with an eye to direct." According to io9, the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2 will have "a completely new take on the property."This all comes after Gunn was fired by Marvel Studios from helming the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, after a series of old tweets resurfaced. Thus far, Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, has not announced a replacement director for Gunn or whether it will use the script he'd already written for the movie. However, star Dave Bautista (Drax) has publicly said if the script isn't used, he would ask to be released from his contract. The tweets in question were from nearly a decade ago, in which Gunn made jokes about rape and pedophilia. Though Gunn had previously apologized for the messages and did so when they resurfaced, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement, "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."Since then, the entire Guardians cast has signed a public letter supporting their director, while the third installment in the franchise has been put on hold indefinitely, according to Bautista. The film was reportedly scheduled to start production in early 2019, with a projected release in 2020.Gunn joining the project will likely mean an even longer wait for Suicide Squad 2, though there was very little indication of when fans would see the movie anyway. It was reported over a year ago that The Accountant director Gavin O'Connor would helm the film, but there's been no real news since then.In the meantime, a new Joker film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has gone into production, while Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is set to appear in a Birds of Prey movie. Now, with Gunn potentially taking on Suicide Squad 2, DC's villains could be in good shape for the coming years.Info from Gamespot.com

A new season of Riverdale means new mysteries, likely a pile of dead bodies, and much more drama than any group of teenagers would be expected to deal with in the real world. Of course, there will also be teens coupling up, a murder trial, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) potentially going to jail, and a cult to deal with.GameSpot sat down with showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to talk about the new season and that cult was a particularly interesting point of discussion. The Farm, as it's called, was first mentioned in Season 1, when Polly (Tiera Skovbye) revealed it's where she and Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines) planned to run away to. It was revealed in Season 2 that the location is actually home to a cult, which is coming to town this year. When it arrives, it won't just be Polly in its clutches, but also Alice (Madchen Amick)."Alice very rarely does things half-heartedly," Aguirre-Sacasa teased. "When she goes after something it's like she's all in. She's all in on The Farm and yeah, Betty is very skeptical, very scared for her mom. She feels that her mom is kinda being preyed on when she's at her most vulnerable."Vulnerable is definitely an understatement when it comes to Alice. In Season 2, she was not only conned into believing a stranger was the son she gave up years ago, but she found out her husband Hal (Lochlyn Munro) was the serial killer known as the Black Hood. It's hard to blame her for having her defenses down in such a way that she gets pulled into a cult. Of course, given Betty won't be taking part in the group, chances are this new group will serve as yet another wedge driven between the Cooper women. However, there is something that might bring them together: the Jones women. It was previously revealed that Gladys and Jellybean Jones--Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) mother and sister, respectively--will appear in Season 3. Gina Gershon will portray Gladys and, as Aguirre-Sacasa tells it, won't be too happy about how entwined in her family's life Alice and Betty have become."The gift of a character like Gladys or the potential of a character like Gladys is to cause trouble for Jughead, for FP, for Betty, for Alice, for the mayor, for the Serpents," he said. "Cause, you know, Gladys used to be the Serpent Queen and now Betty's the Serpent Queen. Gladys was with FP and now FP may or may not be with Alice... I don't think Gladys is gonna take a particular liking to the Cooper ladies."A battle of the biker queens and a cult thrown into the middle of it? Riverdale is shaping up to be somehow even more dramatic than in previous seasons, and that's before you take into account the Gargoyle Killer that's going to be dropping bodies in the new season. Riverdale returns Wednesday, October 10, at 8 PM ET on The CW.Info from Gamespot.com

The Farm 51 has announced that the first-person shooter World War 3 will release in early access on October 19. The game costs $28 USD to download and play. We've reached out to ask about European and Australian prices.World War 3 takes tactical, modern day combat and puts it on a global battlefield. Where Halo is sci-fi, Battlefield has destructive environments, and Call of Duty fantasizes high-speed combat, World War 3 is aiming for a more authentic experience. Your character can't perform superhuman feats and the ballistic system for each gun behaves as it would in the real world. You'll have to be careful and rely on your teammates if you hope to win matches.Multiplayer matches host 64 players at a time, and the tide of the war will have your team constantly switching between attacking enemy positions, or defending your own. So far, World War 3 has two modes, Warzone and Recon. In Warzone, you travel to real-world locations--like Berlin and Warsaw--to engage in massive battles where your team will need to respond to multiple threats while planning your own attacks. Recon mode is much smaller, tasking squads with securing "high-value targets in hostile territory" where individual decisions have a more immediate impact.World War 3 launches in early access on PC. The Farm 51 is also considering bringing the game to consoles at a certain point, but nothing has been decided yet.Info from Gamespot.com

One of 2018's biggest games, Fallout 76, won't be available on the world's largest PC platform, Steam. Instead, Bethesda is releasing the game on PC exclusively through its own Bethesda.net launcher. The move makes business sense, as Bethesda won't have to pay Steam operator Valve its cut of sales, but the announcement shocked some fans as previous Fallout games like Fallout 4 and Fallout 3 launched on Steam. So why won't Fallout 76 be available on Steam? Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines told GameSpot that the company wants to have a "direct relationship" with Fallout 76 players due to the game's always-online, multiplayer focus."Well because of the kind of game it is," Hines said when asked by Fallout 76 is bypassing Steam. "Because it's an online, always-on game-as-a-service. Based on our experience based on other things that we've done, we felt like having a direct relationship with our customers was super important to us. And so doing it through Bethesda.net, exclusively, allows us to have that one-to-one relationship with customers, that quite honestly you don't always have when you go through another third-party where they might own the relationship with the customer in terms of being able to email them or to reach out directly and contact them."Hines added that making Fallout 76 available exclusively on Bethesda.net also "simplifies things" as it relates to a number of things."We believe it's going to help us deal with some issues and challenges that we've seen in the past," he said. "And again, its a new experience, like the game itself is and we're going to see how it goes and how it works and what benefits it allows us to have in making sure that our customers have the best experience possible."Bethesda's Fallout Shelter launched as a Bethesda.net exclusive before eventually launching on Steam at a later date, so it seems at least theoretically possible that Fallout 76 could come to Steam in the future. It's not an unprecedented move for a big game to bypass Steam. Activision's Destiny 2 is only available on PC through Battle.net, while Blizzard's games like World of Warcraft and Diablo III can only be purchased digitally on PC through Battle.net as well.Fallout 76 is also coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the console version will be released in the traditional sense on those platforms with Sony and Microsoft getting their cuts. Microsoft has a special co-marketing deal in place with Bethesda as well for Fallout 76.The pre-order exclusive Fallout 76 beta starts on October 23 for Xbox One before coming to PS4 and PC on October 30. The beta represents the full game, and your progress will carry forward to launch on November 14.For more on Fallout 76, you can check out GameSpot's roundup of everything you need know, including our thoughts on what we've played so far and more. Venom and Spider-Man are linked inseparably in fans' minds, and for good reason. In the comic books, Venom's entire characterization, from its motivations to its appearance, revolves around Spidey. So making the new Venom movie without any reference to Spider-Man seems like a gargantuan task--a fact Venom director Ruben Fleischer is well aware of.The most glaring representation of Spider-Man's absence in Venom is easily the lack of the Symbiote's iconic white spider logo that's normally emblazoned across its chest, which Fleischer addressed at Comic-Con. As he rightfully points out, giving Venom a spider logo in this movie "makes no sense." And as he told GameSpot during a recent interview, figuring out how to make up for Spidey's absence in the movie was "the most challenging part" of production."That was the only real thing that was a limitation, was the fact that we couldn't feature Spider-Man at all in the movie," he said. "If there's no Spider-Man, then there wouldn't be any reason to have a spider on his chest. And so it did take a lot of time to figure out what to put in its place, and we ended up with that veiny white pattern, which I think looks super cool. But yeah, we did a ton of iterations of different designs for what the chest would ultimately look like."That was the most challenging part, because you have something that's so iconic, and anything you put in its place just doesn't look right. So it took a lot of time to find something that was distinctive and subtle."Naturally, Venom's look wasn't the only aspect of the character that had to be altered for this movie. There's also the question of the Symbiote's motivation--why does it ally itself with Eddie Brock, if not for their mutual hatred of Spider-Man?"Yeah, we had to manufacture that, because obviously in the comics they bond over the fact that they both hate Spider-Man," Fleischer said. "Since we didn't have that as something for them to connect over, we went with the idea that they're kindred spirits, and that Venom sees in Eddie somebody like himself who--on his planet, maybe Venom's a bit of a loser too, and then on our planet he decides he can be a big fish in a small pond. "In all honesty, I think we had to ground the relationship in something to justify Venom's betrayal of his own race. And we tried to make it that there was just a real connection between Eddie and Venom, because of their common worldview."The Venom spin-off movie has been in the works since at least 2008, but it's unclear how much work from earlier versions was incorporated into the latest iteration. According to Fleischer, the version of the movie he's worked on--the draft penned by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner--never had Spider-Man in it. "So it's not like we had to extract him from it," Fleischer said. "It was always, from its inception, built as an origin story with a new approach. And I thought of it as an Ultimate version of Venom, like an Ultimate movie version of Venom."Given that they had to change so much about the character, Fleischer tried to stay true to the comics in as many other ways as possible, from the visuals to the writing. Lines of dialogue are ripped straight from the pages, while Fleischer used his favorite comics panels as inspiration for Venom's visual design."I think in that first closeup when you see him, when he first appears with Treece, and he's holding him by the throat, he just looks like he's actually there, which I'm really proud of," he said. "I really felt a responsibility, especially since we couldn't put the spider on his chest, that we make Venom be as true to the comics as possible despite that fact."Venom star Tom Hardy recently said that his favorite scenes from the movie didn't make it into the final cut, while Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane revealed how he would have changed the movie. Meanwhile, we ranked every Venom universe Symbiote based on how '90s Xtreme they are.Venom hits theaters Friday, October 5. Info from Gamespot.com

Season 6 of Fortnite rolls on. Another set of weekly challenges are now available to complete for Week 2, and as usual, if you manage to finish all of the ones from a given week, you'll in turn complete a Hunting Party challenge--this season's equivalent of the Road Trip challenges from Season 5.The reward for completing a Hunting Party challenge is a special loading screen, which hides a very subtle hint to the location of a free item hidden around the island. Typically, the item in question is a free Battle Star, which levels your Battle Pass up by one tier once collected, but toward the end of Season 5, Epic began hiding banners in their place.Oddly, it appears a banner is the reward for completing the Week 2 Hunting Party challenge. If you've kept up-to-date with all of Season 6's weekly missions thus far, you'll unlock the following loading screen, which depicts a character standing in the middle of a dark forest while werewolves lurk among the trees. Peer closely enough at the image and you'll spot the silhouette of a banner and a carriage engraved in one of the trees on the right side of the screen. The carriage in question can be found moldering in the desert just to the north of Paradise Palms. Glide to that location at the beginning of a match, find the carriage, and the banner will appear above it. Collect it as you would any other item and you'll be able to use it as a profile icon.If you need more helping finding the secret banner, we've marked its location on the map below. You can also watch the video we put together at the top of this story showing you exactly where you need to go to collect the banner. However, as has been the case with previous Hunting Party and Road Trip challenges, the banner will only appear once you've completed the requisite number of challenges and unlocked the aforementioned loading screen.Week 2's challenges arrived shortly after Fortnite's 6.01 update, and they task players with visiting corrupted areas and using the newly reenabled Shadow Stones during matches, among other missions. Completing these will help level up your Battle Pass, which in turn will unlock cosmetics and other rewards, such as the new Pets. You can see everything up for grabs this season in our Season 6 rewards gallery. For help completing challenges, be sure to check out our Season 6 challenge roundup.Info from Gamespot.com

Some major changes are on the way for Destiny 2 later this month, as is the Halloween-themed Festival of the Lost event. In the meantime, we have the latest weekly reset, which doesn't bring much in the way of new content. It does, however, mark a refresh for activities across the game, offering a variety of new ways to obtain Powerful gear. Here's the lowdown on what's new in the reset this week for Forsaken owners, including the Ascendant Challenge, Spider's big bounty, Eververse's store update, and more.Ascendant ChallengeAnother new Ascendant Challenge--possibly the last original one we'll see for now before they begin to be recycled--is now available. The portal is located in a Lost Sector, and inside you'll have to deal with a gauntlet of enemies and (of course) some platforming. You'll need to use a Tincture of Queensfoil in order to see the portal, and be sure to grab the bounty from Petra before starting. The chest you receive at the end is nothing special, but the bounty itself offers Powerful gear.Spider Bounty -- Wanted: Gravetide SummonerFor the third week running, the big bounty offered by Spider--the one that offers Powerful gear--is Wanted: Gravetide Summoner. But whereas last week's repeat of this did at least take you to a different Lost Sector, this one brings us back to the same one as two weeks ago. Take five Ghost Fragments to Spider to pick up the bounty, and you'll receive an Adventure on Titan's The Rig. Kill the boss in the Lost Sector to complete the bounty and earn Powerful gear.NightfallAs is typical, the Nightfall has been refreshed with three new choices of Strikes. You can pick from Warden of Nothing, The Corrupted, and The Pyramidion; all three have a recommended Power level of 540. Whichever you choose, there's a piece of Powerful gear for completing it. If you manage to do so while achieving a score of 100,000 or more, you'll also receive another Powerful gear.EververseA new set of bounties are available from Eververse, most of which reward you with varying amounts of Bright Dust. The cost of these bounties varies, but as always, the most expensive one gets you the most Bright Dust for your investment--provided you finish it. This week, that bounty is Herosim in Battle (complete five Strikes from the Strike playlist), which will net you 150 Bright Dust upon completion. The Rise of the Challenge bounty is available, which offers a Prismatic Facet as a reward. If you have a Facet on hand (or are willing to spend some Silver), you can activate the Matrix, which has a new set of items. Here's what's on offer:Guardian Angel (Exotic weapon ornament for The Chaperone)Death to Kells (Exotic ship)Dragonfly Regalia Vest (Legendary Hunter chest armor)Dragonfly Regalia Helm (Legendary Titan helmet)Dragonfly Regalia Bond (Legendary Warlock bond)Atlantis Shell (Legendary Ghost shell)Astera Blade (Legendary ship)Here I Stand (Legendary vehicle)Jade Rabbit Projection (Rare Ghost projection)Awkward Greeting (Rare emote)PetraPetra's location has rotated again, and we're back to the most pleasant of the bunch. She's in Divalian Mists, right next to the Dreaming City's landing zone. You'll want to speak with her to grab the Ascendant Challenge bounty, as well as The Orange Engine, which lets you do the mission of the same name. War for the Dreaming City has you again complete eight daily bounties for Petra during the week, and Gateway Between Worlds has you take part in the Blind Well. All four of these reward you with Powerful gear.Clan BountiesNew clan bounties are now available. The weekly ones offer the biggest clan XP rewards, with Blindsight (completing the Blind Well at Tier III or above while in a fireteam with clanmates) offering the most. You can also pick up Band of Adventurers (complete three Adventures with clanmates) and House Advantage (complete Gambit matches with clanmates). Those ready to dive into the Raid can also taken on Summoning Ritual, which asks you to complete the challenge of the same name. Complete that, and you'll net yourself some Powerful gear.Vanguard StrikesThe Vanguard Strikes playlist again has the same weekly challenge, which asks you to complete three Strikes while using the same subclass element as one of your Fireteam members. Do that for a piece of Powerful gear. Microsoft is in the final stages of coming to terms on a buyout deal for Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II developer Obsidian Entertainment, according to a new report. Multiple sources told Kotaku that a deal is nearly finished, though it may not be finalised as of yet.Microsoft offered the expected, "We do not comment on rumours or speculation" when approached by GameSpot, but Obsidian took things further. The company opted to kick off an internal development argument about music.Obsidian PR manager Mikey Dowling said his company would similarly not comment on the speculation, except for when it comes to albums called Rumours. "Unfortunately, we don't comment on rumours or speculation other than to say that the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up," he said in a statement to Kotaku. And now, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart said he prefers the band Timex Social Club's 1986 hit single "Rumors.""We do not comment on rumours or speculation, but unlike our PR Manager Mikey Dowling, I can't get enough of Rumours by Timex Social Club," he told GameSpot.Back to the seriousness: the Kotaku report cites one source saying Microsoft's deal to buy out Obsidian was "90 percent finished." Another tipster said it's just a matter of time before the deal closes. Nothing is certain, however, as sometimes deals that look solid fall through in the 11th hour.Obsidian was founded in 2003 and has remained independent since then. The studio made a name for itself with 2004's KOTOR II, which was followed up by Neverwinter Nights 2 in 2006. The Irvine, California-based studio put out an original game, Alpha Protocol, with publisher Sega in 2010. That was also the year that Obsidian released one of its best-known projects, Fallout: New Vegas, in partnership with Bethesda. In 2014, Obsidian partnered with another big company, Ubisoft, for the South Park game The Stick of Truth. After that, the studio turned to Kickstarter for a new RPG called Pillars of Eternity; the 2018 sequel Deadfire was also funded on Kickstarter.Obsidian was facing financial trouble in 2012, according to Kotaku, after Microsoft reportedly cancelled an RPG that the Xbox company hired them to create as an exclusive. After that, Obsidian made the unexpected announcement of partnering with Russian company My.com for a tank game. Obsidian stopped working on the tank game, Armored Warfare, at the beginning of 2017.Obsidian is currently working on an unannounced RPG that will be published by Rockstar and 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive's new indie publishing arm Private Division. This game won't have microtransactions but that's pretty much all that's known about it. What happens to this game if Microsoft buys Obsidian remains to be seen, but Private Division plans to publish it."While it is our policy not to comment on rumours or speculation, we look forward to publishing the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and remain confident in the team there to deliver an outstanding game," a spokesperson for Private Division told Kotaku.Microsoft has been criticised for not having enough good exclusive games relative to Sony and Nintendo. Seemingly in response to this, Microsoft announced at E3 that it acquired four big-name studios, including Playground Games (Forza Horizon), Ninja Theory (Hellblade), Compulsion Games (We Happy Few), and Undead Labs (State of Decay). Additionally, Microsoft created a brand-new studio called The Initiative, which is headed up by a former Square Enix and Activision boss. Recently, Microsoft hired Red Dead Redemption's lead writer/designer and God of War's producer for this studio.Earlier this year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased yet another studio acquisition. He told GameSpot sister site CNET, " I've been explicit that we needed to up our investment in our first-party studios, and at E3 we announced the addition of five new studios. I don't think we're done. People want to play great games on our platform."Another source told Kotaku that Microsoft wants to do more in the PC gaming space. Obsidian is principally a PC-focused studio, so the studio being targeted makes sense in theory at least. No details about the terms of Microsoft's supposed buyout of Obsidian are available at this stage, but keep checking back with GameSpot for more.
