Microsoft has offered only occasional updates on Project xCloud since debuting it last year, to the point that we assumed we had heard the last of it until at least E3 2019. But with the big event mere weeks away, Microsoft has shed a little more insight on the progress of its streaming service. In an update from gaming cloud VP Kareem Choudhry, Microsoft noted that it has deployed its xCloud tech to 13 Azure regions, allowing game developers like Capcom and other devs to test games using the xCloud platform. This follows an earlier employee take-home program that served as the first real-world test.Microsoft notes that Project xCloud has the potential to stream more than 3,500 games already, across the three generations of Xbox. An update to the Xbox One version of any game would populate across xCloud immediately without any additional work for developers or downloads for consumers. Microsoft also boasts another 1,900 games in development for Xbox One, which could be put on xCloud easily.Much of this is similar to Google's pitch for its Stadia platform, though Microsoft is stressing the ease-of-use with tools developers are already accustomed to if they've been developing on Xbox One architecture. The blog also notes that it has updated its developer kit with a new "IsStreaming" API, which allows a game to adjust certain options if it detects that it is being played through the cloud. It could, for example, adjust font sizes for smaller displays like a phone, or matchmake multiplayer games from the same server. The news that Capcom is one target for Microsoft's streaming tech makes sense, as Capcom has already been experimenting with streaming games in Japan. Microsoft and Sony also recently announced a strategic partnership on gaming and cloud services, though it's unclear exactly how that will manifest itself--especially since the announcement apparently took the PlayStation team by surprise.Microsoft is preparing to "go big" at its E3 2019 presentation, which is widely expected to begin debuting its new console hardware and streaming plans. Check out the full E3 press conference schedule to plan your viewing parties, and then take a look back at how Microsoft has debuted new gaming hardware in the past.Info from Gamespot.com

The Monster Hunter movie is steadily moving along, as producers Constantin Film and Impact Pictures--the team behind the Resident Evil movie franchise--locked down a 2020 release date earlier this year. Lead actress Milla Jovovich (Reisdent Evil series, Hellboy) spoke about the upcoming fantasy action flick at this year's Cannes Film Festival. In a brief interview, Variety asked Jovovich what fans should look forward to next. Jovovich immediately quipped back with "Oh, Monster Hunter 2020!" She then descibes the movie as "incredible" before giving some quick context. She says that training for the movie is hard but it makes her "mentally more able to deal with the overwhelming experiences that we all go through in our lives." You can check out her thoughts on the movie below.Milla Jovovich gives an update on the upcoming film "Monster Hunter," which is based on the popular video game #Cannes2019 #amfAR pic.twitter.com/rwWTNDFIC0 — Variety (@Variety) May 23, 2019The Monster Hunter movie stars Tony Jaa (Furious 7, XXX: Return of Xander Cage), Clifford "T.I." Along with Forza and Halo, one of Xbox's most highly regarded exclusive franchises is Gears of War. Developed by The Coalition--formerly Black Tusk Studios--Gears 5 aims to up the scale of the series, while also shedding more light on returning Gears of War 4 character Kait Diaz, who is now the protagonist for the next game. Though the series has always stuck close with its cover-to-cover shooting gameplay, Gears 5 looks to be the most significant departure we've seen yet for the franchise, placing more emphasis on exploration and traversal across planet Sera following the events of Gears of War 4.We haven't heard too many details about the game following its reveal last year, but that hasn't stopped us from coming up with ideas about what we want to see from the game at E3 2019. So here's a quick rundown of everything we know about Gears 5 so far, and what Microsoft should reveal during its E3 press conference. What We Know So FarGears 5 was officially revealed at E3 2018, and it will release simultaneously on Xbox One and PC. Along with that, two spin-off games were also revealed, the strategy-focused Gears Tactics and Gears Pop!--a Funko Pop tie-in game. With Gears 5 being a direct sequel to Gears of War 4--this time dropping the 'of War' from its title--it shifts the focus to returning character Kait Diaz, who is trying to learn more about her connection to the Locust. Though the once fearsome hive from the original trilogy was long thought to have been destroyed, GOW4 revealed that they evolved into a new foe called The Swarm--the primary antagonist in the new trilogy. The last game was very much a fresh start for the series, bringing several storylines to a close in favor of introducing some new characters--including the son of Marcus Fenix, JD. Alongside JD was Kait, who played a rather significant role in the story.Much like the previous games, Gears 5 will feature a story campaign that is playable solo and in co-op with another player. From the debut trailer, we got to see some of the locales you'll come to visit, including a jungle and frozen lake. The latter section even allowed Kait and her companion to use a snow-skiff to travel across the ice, which seems to suggest that there will be some sizeable levels to explore. Gears 5 will also feature an expanded competitive multiplayer mode, but those details haven't been revealed just yet. Recently, Xbox head of business Phil Spencer stated that he's seen Gears 5 in action and that it's "looking great."What's Confirmed For E3 2019?So far, Microsoft has been keeping most details about the game close to the vest. One thing we do know that is Microsoft will be revealing new competitive gameplay on June 14, the Friday of E3 week. This ties into the debut of its new esports series Eleague, which will show off some new footage of Gears 5's multiplayer. Given that this will debut shortly after E3 2019, it's fair to say that we'll be seeing more of Gears 5 at the show. However, what we'll see from the game exactly is still a mystery. What We Want From E3 2019?Gears of War 4 was something of a fresh-start for the series, focusing primarily on the next generation of COG soldiers on the planet Sera. During the campaign, we saw several new monsters, weapons, and even a new faction that teased what was to come for the future of the series. It would be great to see Gears 5 further expand on the story. One thing that would be fantastic to show off is the increased scale of the campaign. In the trailer, we saw Kait piloting a skiff and exploring some jungles; during E3 2019, we'd love to see more of the moment-to-moment action, and how it'll weave in the familiar cover-based shooting. With the announcement of the Eleague, it seems like Gears 5 will lean heavily into competitive multiplayer. Gears of War 4 featured some substantial multiplayer offerings, which carried over several game-types and objectives from previous games. So it would be fantastic to see Gears 5 continuing on the tradition of brutal combat and team-oriented tactics. Along with traditional team deathmatch and CTF, we'd love to see some gameplay of the Horde mode, which has become a staple since GOW2. Also, we definitely need to see footage of someone get killed with a chainsaw-rifle.Lastly, the thing we want to see most from E3 2019 is for Microsoft to reveal the release date for Gears 5. There have been some teases about it arriving later in 2019, and with a mostly light Fall 2019 schedule at this time--and likely the newest Xbox console coming next year--now seems like the perfect time for the next entry in Microsoft's shooter series to see its next installment.Info from Gamespot.com

Valve's latest Steam event, Spring Cleaning, has begun and will continue until May 28 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST. The event allows you to play several select games for free, and also complete specific tasks to earn badges. In Spring Cleaning, you can unlock three different unique profile badges for your Steam account. The first badge is unlocked after you've completed five tasks, the second badge at 10, and the third at 15. There are a total of 17 tasks, so you have a bit of choice when it comes to which ones you complete.Three daily tasks will require you log in four different times to fully complete, thus making up 12 of the 17 total tasks. The first, Speed Clean, is perhaps the easiest. All you have to do is play the free games offered during Spring Clean. There are some pretty good ones on the list, such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Black Desert Online. The other two require you to have used Steam for buying and playing games before. Spin Cycle tasks you with playing games from your Steam library that Valve will randomly pick out for you. Clear the Backlog, on the other hand, can only be completed by playing a game that you bought but never actually tried. The remaining five tasks are not daily challenges and can only be completed once. To complete Nostalgia, you'll need to play a game that you've already invested two hours into but "haven't played in a while." To nab Can't Wait, you have to play a game you've purchased in the last six months, regardless if you've played it or not. Trusted Friend wants you to play a game that a Steam friend recommended to you, and Tag Contributor asks you to play a game you've applied a tag to or created a tag for. Last year's Blast From The Past task is back, once again asking you to play the first game you bought on Steam. If you happened to complete this task last year, then this year you must play the second game you bought on Steam.Info from Gamespot.com

Tensions between the United States and China have been escalating in recent months due to the countries' ongoing trade war, and the price of game consoles and accessories could be affected as a result. GameDaily reports that the Office of the United States Trade Representative has proposed implementing a 25% tariff on more goods imported from China, including video game consoles, controllers, and even board games like chess and checkers.Tariffs are effectively taxes paid by domestic companies. To offset these expenses, companies often raise the prices of products affected by tariffs, passing the cost onto consumers who end up paying more for certain items. While game consoles would be swept up in the last wave of tariffs, they are far from the only products that would be affected; thousands of goods manufactured in China would be subject to the tariff. This certainly isn't the first instance where the Trump administration's hardline stance against China has had negative repercussions for the video game industry. The US already imposes a 10% tariff that affects some Nvidia and AMD graphic cards manufactured in China. If the new tariff is implemented, it could cause console makers to increase the prices of their systems in order to recoup the added expense. The news comes just as the video game industry is gearing up for a new generation of consoles. Sony has in recent weeks been revealing details about its next-generation PlayStation, while Microsoft is known to be working on a next-gen Xbox, which rumors suggest could be unveiled at E3 2019. New video game consoles already carry a fairly hefty price tag, and that price could only rise if the new tariff is indeed imposed. The United States Trade Representative will hold public hearings about the proposed tariff on June 17, shortly after E3 2019 ends. The result of those hearings will determine whether or not the tariff is implemented. If the USTR does go through with the tariff, it could go into effect as soon as June 24, according to GameDaily.Info from Gamespot.com

Google used its Stadia reveal event to explain the potential of its game streaming platform and sell some of its unique benefits, but some very big questions remained. Now the company has teased that we'll get those answers this summer. In an official tweet, Google promised more details are coming soon. More specifically, it promised a price reveal, game announcements, and launch information. Those are the three biggest lingering questions surrounding the platform, and it sounds as if Google is preparing a second big event to answer them.More vague is the timing of these reveals. It says this summer, which could mean an announcement during or near E3 2019. We haven't yet seen Google stake out a time for an E3 press conference, though, so the company may be avoiding the spectacle of the annual event and looking to carve out its own time with less competition.Google Stadia is a streaming-only platform for games, which means it can run through your browser as easily as your TV with a pass-through box. Google plans to sell a dedicated controller optimized for the device, but otherwise says standard controllers will just work. Our hands-on showed impressive potential, but the pricing model is still a total mystery.Meanwhile, Microsoft is preparing its own Project xCloud streaming solution to compete with Google Stadia. That appears primed for an E3 debut, and Microsoft recently announced that it has moved into a testing phase with select developers. By comparison to Google, Microsoft is stressing the ease of development on familiar hardware, as well as a vast back-catalog of existing Xbox, 360, and Xbox One games. For more on cloud gaming, check out our primer on everything you need to know.Info from Gamespot.com

Peel back the layers and there's a clear connective tissue tying Layers of Fear 2 and its predecessor together. Both games are centered around an artist gradually losing their grip on reality. While the original game focused on a struggling painter in an opulent Victorian mansion, Layers of Fear 2 shifts art forms to tell the story of a Hollywood actor during the Golden Age of cinema, as he embarks on a new role in a movie being shot aboard a decadent ocean liner. Developer Bloober Team has created something more varied and ambitious than its past work, taking inspiration from iconic film directors like Georges Méliès, Fritz Lang, and Alfred Hitchcock. And while it is a visually striking horror game, Layers of Fear 2 struggles to establish its own identity and explore its themes of anguish and despair in meaningful ways. The story itself is like a jigsaw puzzle; some of the pieces come together as the narrative unfolds, but others are scattered across the environment as notes, optional puzzles, sound recordings, and paraphernalia that provide new details on your character's troubled past. You might not be able to put the whole picture together before the game's conclusion, but it's a familiar and clichéd tale that isn't too difficult to discern once events begin to wrap up. Childhood trauma is the key motif, built around the relationship you had with your sister, but Layers of Fear 2 regularly uses routine horror tropes as opposed to something more personal. This decision doesn't coalesce with the story to provide a sense that your character's state of mind and past anguish are shaping what's happening. During the first act you catch spectral forms out of the corner of your eye, and this eventually evolves into frequent appearances from crudely assembled mannequins and a formless monster that stalks you through much of the game. These creatures are unnerving, but they're not really specific to the game or this character, failing to capitalize on the strengths of psychological horror and the inherent importance of a character's fears and trepidations in manifesting intimate threats.Similarly, much of Layers of Fear 2's art design is wrapped around the classic films that inspired it, which doesn't always come together in a consistent way. Saying it takes place aboard a ship is a tad disingenuous, as the setting is constantly shifting and transporting you to a variety of disparate environments. Overt homages to films such as The Wizard of Oz, A Trip to the Moon, and Nosferatu are littered throughout the game. Some of them are deftly woven into the narrative and the game's own art style, but others lack context and fail to rise above being mere visual spectacles, foregoing any semblance of cohesion with the rest of the game. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, particularly if you have an appreciation for this era of cinema, but it also makes Layers of Fear 2 feel like an inconsequential mishmash of film references without any clear significance to the story it's trying to tell.Much of Layers of Fear 2's art design is wrapped around the classic films that inspired it, which doesn't always come together in a consistent wayYour interactions with the world are very tangible, which helps ground you in the game's setting even when the threads of reality are stretched thinner and thinner. The majority of your time is spent simply exploring each space, gathering knick-knacks to fill in the story, and solving puzzles to progress. The conundrums it places before you are never particularly challenging or memorable, whether it's using a dial with 10 numbers to multiply up to a specific digit or manipulating a roll of film to create a doorway. Some of them are in keeping with the tone of the game and its cinematic feel, but others are so inane they just feel out of place. What Layers of Fear 2 does do well is build atmosphere and an ever-escalating sense of dread. The score is ominous, utilizing string instruments to send a chill down your spine. But there are also plenty of opportunities for the sound design to breathe on its own, too. The creaking of wooden floorboards, rats scurrying past your feet, and the plip-plop of dripping water create tension despite their mundanity. It also makes you hesitant to simply turn around, as the environment toys with impossible spaces, distorting the world around you when you're not looking. When you walk into a room and find a locked door with nowhere else to go but back the way you came, the suspense hits, tapping into that fear of the unknown--of what's waiting to greet you once you turn your head.Unfortunately, these anxiety-inducing feelings diminish as the game progresses and it leans too heavily on tried and tested tactics. The aforementioned mannequins are consistently impressive due to their creepy stop-motion-esque movement, but they're featured so heavily that their effect as something to be scared of is severely diminished. This is a problem with Layers of Fear 2 as a whole; the protracted playtime of around 10 hours struggles to maintain its early momentum through the last couple of chapters. The formless creature that oftentimes stalks you adds some urgency to what is otherwise a methodical affair, but the most terrifying thing about the chase sequences is the threat of having to redo them if you fail. Sometimes the monster's arrival comes so suddenly that you're dead before even realizing what's happened, and these cheap insta-kills mean you're frustratingly subjected to the same death animation over and over again. There are remnants of an excellent horror game submerged just below the surface of Layers of Fear 2. Horror icon Tony Todd--of Candyman fame--lends his bassy growl to the disembodied and omnipresent voice of the film's eccentric director. Each word he bellows is a sonorous treat, no matter how terrifying his performance is. The art design, too, while disjointed, conjures some breathtaking imagery that you can't help but marvel at. It's just a shame that Layers of Fear 2 frequently pays lip service to the films and games that clearly inspired it while struggling to find a voice of its own. The story is too hazy to latch onto until the latter stages, and then nothing about it is particularly engaging, with its central mystery building towards something we've seen numerous times before. It occasionally hints at interesting themes but fails to go anywhere with them, falling back on telegraphed jump scares rather than delving deeper into the psychological horror it can only tease at. For every piece of good work there's an analogous aspect that lacks focus and direction. Layers of Fear 2 feels lost at sea. Info from Gamespot.com

Disney's latest live-action remake of one of its classic animated movies, Aladdin, hits theatres this weekend in time for the Memorial Day long weekend in the United States.Directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch), the film features Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie in a role that mixes CG and live-action shots. The film follows the same basic story of the acclaimed 1992 film where the "street rat" Aladdin finds a lamp containing the Genie who grants him wishes. The new movie features a number of songs from the original, including classics like "A Whole New World" and "Prince Ali."Ahead of Aladdin's release, reviews for the film have started to appear online. We're collecting excerpts here to help you get an idea for if the movie is worth your time and money. For more on the critical reaction to the film, head to GameSpot sister site Metacritic.AladdinDirected By: Guy RitchieWritten By: John August, Guy RitchieStarring: Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Will Smith, Marwan Kenzari.Release Date: May 24 (United States)Runtime: 128 minutesGameSpot"Aladdin is good. It's not perfect, but it's a big, extravagant musical that's filled with fun performances, bright colors, and some exciting moments. Will Smith's turn as Genie isn't better than what Robin Williams brought to the character, but it's different enough that it stands on its own merit. And, if you're into this sort of thing--and you should be--Smith has a new rap over the end credits that is themed to the movie." -- Chris Hayner [Full review]The Seattle Times"It's got a flying carpet. It's got an enchanted lamp. It's got a shape-shifting genie. But alas, Aladdin lacks real magic. Instead, Disney's misconceived live-action remake of the studio's 1992 animated classic offers the audience overstuffed musical-production numbers that look like they've been edited with a meat ax. Chop, chop, choppy." -- Soren Andersen [Full review]The Guardian"It still holds up as a tale whose central couple's deceptions and entrapments and self-discoverings have a pleasing symmetry to them, and whose 'it's what inside that counts' morals are in the right place. That's really all anyone wanted out of a new Aladdin: not a whole new world, just a slightly updated old one." -- Steve Rose [Full review]Slant MagazineCertainly there was a lot of room to bring a contemporary perspective to this material—to counter the original’s problematic representation of its Middle-Eastern milieu and deepen its characters. Instead, the film settles for telling you a joke you’ve already heard and botching the delivery. -- Jake Cole [Full review]San Francisco Chronicle "Aladdin, the live-action remake of the 1992 Disney animation, is more than a pleasant surprise. It's a complete delight that stands on its own and is, in many ways, an improvement on the original." -- Mick LaSalle [Full review]Screen Crush"There's still noting that this Aladdin does better--or as well--as the original. Even the parts pulled directly from the 1992 Aladdinby Ron Clements and John Musker, like the songs, have lost something in translation. (The whole new world of 'A Whole New World' now looks like a generic CGI city.) The nicest thing I can say about 2019's Aladdin is in its best moments it reminded me of a movie I liked a lot as a kid." -- Matt Singer [Full review]USA Today "Ritchie's Aladdin doesn't sing or soar like the 27-year-old cartoon still does, and headier themes might bypass little moviegoers, but it's nonetheless quite a cool and nostalgic magic carpet ride." -- Brian Truitt [Full review]Info from Gamespot.com

The era of Marvel shows on Netflix is almost over--while the existing seasons of Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Punisher will remain on the service, production on the shows has been cancelled over the past few months. But there's one new batch of episodes still to come, and that's Jessica Jones Season 3. Netflix has now revealed that the final season of Jessica Jones will arrive in June. The one thing we don't know is when exactly we'll get the new season. While Netflix has revealed a release date for a variety of shows and movies, Jessica Jones Season 3 is included at the end of a promo for its June releases with no specific date. But at least we know it'll be here in the next few weeks.Jessica Jones Season 3 will star Krysten Ritter as troubled private detective Jessica, plus Rachael Taylor (as Trish), Eka Darville (as Malcolm Ducasse), and Carrie-Anne Moss (as Jeri Hogarth). Few details about the story of the new season are known, but a trailer shouldn't be too far behind.Jessica Jones was the second Marvel Netflix show, following Daredevil, and Season 1 was released in November 2015. Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Punisher, and The Defenders followed, but ultimately all were cancelled. Disney launches its own streaming platform, Disney+, in the Fall and has a host of its own Marvel shows in development for the new service. In February, Ritter posted on Instagram shortly after the show's cancellation. "It has been a dream to play Jessica alongside my amazing cast and the best crew in the business for these past 5 years," she wrote. "I am so grateful for every second of it. We have THE BEST fans. You guys mean the world to me and I appreciate you beyond words. The final season of #JessicaJones is coming later this year and I am proud of how we complete JJ's journey."Info from Gamespot.com

The first trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate is here. The movie is the latest film in the long-running sci-fi action series, and its sees the return of original stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The trailer shows a teenage girl (Natalia Reyes) being relentlessly chased by a Terminator, played by Gabriel Luna (Agents of SHIELD). She's also got a cyborg protector in the shape of Blade Runner 2049's Mackenzie Davis, and soon they are joined by gun-toting Sarah Connor (Hamilton). The promo doesn't really give any plot details away beyond that, but Schwarzenegger appears as an aged, bearded Terminator, and the action certainly looks impressive. Check it out above. This trailer follows the striking first poster, which was released earlier this week. The movie is directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller and produced by James Cameron, who created the franchise and helmed the first two movies. It releases on November 1.The series kicked off in 1984 with Cameron's classic The Terminator, while the groundbreaking T2: Judgement Day followed in 1991. Dark Fate is the first movie in the series since 2015's Terminator: Genisys, which was a critical and commercial disappointment. Info from Gamespot.com

Join GameSpot as we celebrate gaming history and give recognition to the most influential games of the 21st century. These aren't the best games, and they aren't necessarily games that you need to rush out and play today, but there's no question that they left an indelible impact on game developers, players, and in some cases, society at large. In 2007, the newly annual Call of Duty series--while incredibly popular--had a lot of competition. It was a landmark year in games, particularly for shooters; BioShock, Team Fortress 2, and Halo 3 all arrived that year, as did Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and Portal. These days, you might not expect the yearly Call of Duty entry to capture lasting attention among a sea of inventive new franchises. But in 2007, the fourth Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare, was a standout in its own right. Modern Warfare not only marked a shift for the series--it also fundamentally altered multiplayer shooters for over a decade to come.In the 10 years or so leading up to Modern Warfare, first-person shooters had undergone rapid changes. In the mid-'90s, PC shooters were evolving thanks to technical advancements, and 1998's Half-Life helped set a new standard for storytelling in the genre and in games generally. Both local and online multiplayer improved on a technical level, especially with regard to matchmaking and console multiplayer--thanks, in large part, to Halo 2 and Xbox Live. And then there were Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, which kicked off the World War II game boom of the early 2000s.Modern Warfare owes a lot to these foundations. Its moment-to-moment gameplay, especially in the campaign, didn't exactly reinvent the wheel. If you looked past the waves of enemies and incredible set piece moments, the campaign was still a rather linear series of checkpoints and, as then-GameSpot reviewer Jeff Gerstmann noted, it was "almost shockingly short." But shock was kind of the point. It was all too easy to get swept up in its larger-than-life action and its fictional-but-still-plausible modern-day narrative. Gerstmann summed up the now-infamous mission All Ghillied Up, in which you crawl through the grass as tanks rumble over you, as "a breathtaking moment in a campaign filled with breathtaking moments."In many ways, Modern Warfare tread new ground. It was the first Call of Duty game not set during World War II, breaking from the series' origins as a Medal of Honor competitor. And it wasn't a total power fantasy like those WWII games, either. Gerstmann said it perfectly in 2007: "In a world filled with war games in which the good guys come out unscathed and the world is left at total peace, Call of Duty 4 will wake you up like a face full of ice water." That's illustrated best by the mission Shock and Awe, in which you have to work to evacuate your AI squadmates before a nuke detonates, all set to a countdown timer. No matter how fast you operate, you will fail, and that nuke will go off--and everyone, including you, will die.The single-player campaign received widespread praise among critics and fans, and so too did the multiplayer. Modern Warfare introduced a number of series mainstays, including Hardcore game modes (where your health is much lower and there's no HUD, among other changes) and Killstreaks, which later branched out into different kinds of streak rewards. But it was Modern Warfare's class-based progression system that would end up having the biggest impact. In Modern Warfare's multiplayer, you started off with a choice of three classes (five total, after you leveled up a bit and unlocked the rest) with different specializations and loadouts. What set it apart was the new perks system, in which each class had preset, distinct perks that you'd unlock as you played that class. That meant that, by playing a specific way, you'd be rewarded with further ways to improve that playstyle--and once you unlocked the ability to create a custom class, you could combine perks from each class you'd been playing and leveling up.It was a system that gave you solid incentives to keep playing, outside the general fun of competition, and that's the kind of thing that creates dedicated players who stick with a game for months and years. Many shooters adapted this in the years following. Once a strong competitor, 2010's Medal of Honor emulated Modern Warfare's progression system and Killstreaks (and was followed up by one final entry in 2012 before the series was shuttered). Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in 2010 also had similar class-specific rewards, a shift from previous Battlefield games' broader unlock system. Even Halo: Reach, a decidedly very different kind of shooter, brought classes and customizable loadouts to the Halo series' multiplayer. In recent years, as team-based shooters and battle royale games grow in popularity, this exact kind of progression system is becoming less and less common. Today's Call of Duty games take inspiration from these games, not the other way around; 2018's Black Ops 4 included a battle royale mode, and progression in battle royale games is by design not gameplay-related. But Modern Warfare set the stage for the modern concept of multiplayer shooters, games that players keep coming back to for tangible reasons--whether those reasons are gameplay-specific rewards or a randomized loot box full of cosmetics.Call of Duty is among the most successful video game series of all time, all but synonymous with gaming in general. It is a powerhouse, even when a yearly installment fails to impress. There have been 11 Call of Duty games since Modern Warfare, some of them more sensational, perhaps--Modern Warfare 2 caused quite the stir--and some of them outstanding in their own right. Some things that have since become almost essential to the Call of Duty experience, like Zombies, came after Modern Warfare. It speaks volumes that, over 10 years later, Modern Warfare is not only one of the most important Call of Duty games, but also one of the most notable games to come out of one of the best years in gaming in the 21st century. For a look at the rest of our features in this series, head over to our Most Influential Games Of The 21st Century hub.Info from Gamespot.com

The next CBS All Access original series will expand upon the world of Star Trek, yet again. This time around, it will leap into the future and follow the retirement of Jean-Luc Picard, in the upcoming series Star Trek: Picard. Patrick Stewart recently revealed that the show was on its way, and now, there is a teaser for the upcoming series. What happened to Jean-Luc Picard after he left Starfleet? Well, the answer is simple: He opened up a vineyard, and now he makes wine. Visually, that's all the new teaser delivers, as it's the voice-over narration that really tells the tale."15 years ago, today, you led us out of the darkness," a woman says during the trailer, which you can see above. "You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable. What did that cost you? Your faith? Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself? Tell us. Why did you leave Starfleet, Admiral?"Viewers then see a close-up of Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart), followed by "The end is only the beginning" appearing on the screen. Stewart defined the role of Picard on the 1987 series Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran for seven seasons. It is widely considered to be the best series from the world of Star Trek, and it spawned four theatrical movies.Obviously, the whole series won't be about Picard making wine. The series takes place after the end of the Romulan Empire and will be more of a psychological show, compared to CBS All Access's Discovery. "[Star Trek: Picard is] a character study about this man in his emeritus years," producer Alex Kurtzman told the LA Times. "There are so few shows that allow a significantly older protagonist to be the driver...It'll be very different than Discovery. It'll be slower, more meditative. It speaks to the rainbow of colors we're playing with in all these different shows."At this time, there is not a release date for Picard, and the teaser simply states it is "coming soon."Disclosure: CBS Interactive is the parent company of GameSpot.Info from Gamespot.com
