X-Men: Dark Phoenix may be pretty far from the best mutant-centric movie the franchise has to offer--but that doesn't mean it didn't sneak a small handful of extremely worthwhile moments into the mix before fizzling out like a bird-shaped firework in the stratosphere. One of the movie's most non-sequitur scenes just so happened to feature the live-action debut of a mutant that fans have been waiting for for years. If you haven't seen Dark Phoenix yet and want to remain completely unspoiled, stop now. We're going to dig into some minor spoilers.Shortly after the team's return from their ill-fated mission to rescue the Space Shuttle Endeavor and Jean's miraculous (but also ill-fated) recovery from the brink of death, the students and X-Men of Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters throw a bonfire party in the woods featuring some pretty high profile entertainment. Or, well, high profile entertainment if you're up on your X-Men mythology. The live performer for the party is none other than Alison Blaire, aka Dazzler herself. She's never named in the scene, but her iconic light-and-music based powers, as well as her classic costume, are instantly recognizable. Thankfully, she is named in the credits, which reveal the character is played by The Orville's Halston Sage.X-fans have been clamoring for a live-action Dazzler for what feels like decades for obvious reasons. Not only are her powers, the ability to transform soundwaves into light waves, just flat out charming, but her public persona also puts her in an interesting position for mutant-kind. She's a pop star, and a pretty famous one at that--though her status tends to fluctuate from incarnation to incarnation. Introduced in 1980, Dazzler got her start as a disco phenom--and not by accident. She was commissioned by an actual record company as a cross-platform promotional tool in the late 70s, meaning the intent was to actually make a comic book character that would have a real-world analog who could go on to star in movies and TV shows. Bo Derek served as the inspiration for the design and was originally the actor pegged to take on the role.Obviously, that didn't exactly pan out as planned, but the comic book version of Dazzler was introduced nonetheless, complete with her disco-fabulous white, bell-bottomed jumpsuit and roller skates.Despite never actually becoming the multimedia icon she had been designed to be, Dazzler went on to almost immediately become a fan favorite X-Man and cult classic Marvel character even outside of the X-umbrella. As time went on, she transformed from a disco star to a techno/trance star, to a pop star, and virtually everything in between--all while occasionally hitting pause on her musical career to help save the world and get caught up in all the soap opera flavored day-to-day of mutant life.While "turning sound into a light show" may not sound like the coolest or more useful mutant ability, Dazzler is actually surprisingly powerful. With effort and focus, she can craft human-like holograms, focus energy into deadly lasers, even fly by refracting "light energy" in the correct way. Her eyes are also inherently polarized, meaning she never has to use sunglasses which might actually be the most utilitarian mutation ever.Dazzler's cameo is, ultimately, a bittersweet moment for fans who have waited so long to see her in live action. While it's certainly a welcome development for her to appear in full-on Dazzler regalia, disco-inspired suit and all, given Dark Phoenix's status as the final chapter of Fox's X-franchise, it's extremely unlikely that it will have any impact on future X-films under the MCU umbrella. However, all is not lost: The Hulu animated project, Tigra and Dazzler Show, is still set for release as well as the animated team-up show, The Offenders, which includes Dazzler on its roster. Despite being leaked ahead of the event, one of the biggest surprises to come out of Google's pre-E3 Stadia Connect presentation was the reveal of Baldur's Gate III, a new installment in the beloved RPG series by Divinity: Original Sin II developer Larian. The studio has already confirmed the game is coming to PC and Stadia, the latter of which launches in November. But while some might have assumed it would be a debut title for Stadia, we don't yet know Baldur's Gate 3's release date. From the sound of it, however, there's a chance it won't be in 2019.We recently had the opportunity to speak with Larian Studios founder and director Swen Vincke about the upcoming RPG. We asked Vincke what he felt his studio would be able to contribute to the Baldur's Gate franchise, and his response indicated that the game may not release this year:"We're ... in 2019 now--so it's not going to necessarily launch this year--but in 2019, the world has moved on tremendously. With Divinity: Original Sin, we've demonstrated that we can make what people call classic RPG values, that we can make modern. You will see a modern version of Baldur's Gate, but it's going to be true to the core of Dungeons & Dragons more than anything."We asked Vincke more directly about when we could expect Baldur's Gate III to launch, but he vaguely replied "when it's ready." As he explained, "We're going to take all the time we need to make this one really, really good. I think people have been waiting for 20 years, so they can afford to wait a little bit longer."While Vincke wouldn't commit to a release window, that doesn't necessarily mean players won't be able to play Baldur's Gate III this year. Both Divinity: Original Sin II and its predecessor initially released in early access before they formally launched, so there is a possibility that Larian will take a similar approach with Baldur's Gate III.Larian did shed a bit more light on the game during a recent Community Update video. While largely a comedic skit, the video does touch more on ceremorphosis, the gruesome process by which a humanoid creature becomes a Mindflayer--as seen in Baldur Gate III's reveal trailer. Larian also reaffirms that Baldur's Gate III will be a "big grand adventure" that's "true to D&D lore" and has a choice-driven narrative.We may not know when Baldur's Gate III will release, but we do know that Google Stadia will launch this November as part of the Founder's Edition, which will cost $130 / £120. Officially speaking, E3 2019 is a three-day event that begins on June 11. The show floor is open through Thursday, with dozens of companies showcasing their wares to media, retailers, fellow developers, and, in recent years, the public. But as far as fans are concerned, E3 is a much longer event: press conferences are scheduled for the days preceding the expo, but those--and other reveal events--have come earlier and earlier. This week before E3 has been especially busy.Today, June 7, is looking to be fairly light in terms of officially announced events. That said, it's not like we'll be going without any news: THQ Nordic's third of three game announcements was slated for today, and it's turned out to be a Destroy All Humans remake.Wednesday was home to a Pokemon-centric Nintendo Direct, which revealed new details about Nintendo Switch's Sword and Shield. Thursday followed with two back-to-back events: Google Stadia Connect and a Destiny 2 livestream. Google confirmed Stadia's price, release date, and confirmed games, alongside sharing many other details and unveiling some brand-new games--including the rumored Baldur's Gate III from Larian Studios, the developer of Divinity: Original Sin. Destiny 2 was also showcased during the event before Bungie held its own stream to outline the game's future, which includes cross-save support across all platforms (including the new Stadia version) and the Shadowkeep expansion.Before all this, there were other major announcements made recently; we got Death Stranding's release date and trailer and learned about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.Beyond that, there are also the rumors and leaks that continue to sprout up. A development video for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has teased some of the new content scheduled to come to the battle royale game. In the video (which is embedded below), PUBG executive producer and head of development TS Jang said that the game will continue to evolve going forward, including a remake of the original map, Erangel. New movement mechanics are also being added and future seasons will each follow a predetermined theme.Looking towards the future, Jang said PUBG would use themed seasons going forward. "Under the banner of one overall theme," he continued, "fans can expect each season to debut new content, features, and a Survivor Pass." The upcoming Season 4 will focus on updating Erangel, remaking PUBG's original map with enhanced graphics and assets. The new map is releasing on PUBG's PC Test Server this weekend continuing into E3 week. The test is already live and will continue through June 11 at 8 PM PT / 11 PM ET (June 12 at 4 AM BT / 1 PM AET)."We'll continue to develop this balance between survival and combat strategies so that players will be able to experience more varied gameplay," Jang said. Though at first glance Swamp Thing’s origin is about as straightforward as it gets, the reality of a man who ends up becoming a green monster is a little more complicated than you'd think.. From a simple talking tree who occasionally fights villains, to becoming a defender for all plant life to becoming a human again, Swamp Thing is as versatile as the plants that inhabit the swamp he lives in.With a new take on Swamp Thing arriving on DC Universe, though it was already canceled, it gives the perfect opportunity to explore the character's origin. What better time to revisit the complex and bonkers backstory of Swamp Thing?The OriginOriginally intended as a stand-alone horror story, writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson introduced the Swamp Thing in an eight-page story in House of Secrets #92 in 1971 as a character named Alex Olsen, an early 20th century scientist in Louisiana married to a woman named Linda. Alex's assistant Damian Ridge was jealous of Alex and in love with Linda, so he caused one of Alex's chemical experiments to explode--seemingly killing his boss--and buried the body in a nearby swamp. Using Linda's grief to his advantage, Damian swooped in and married her. But of course, Alex didn't really die. His body mixed with the chemicals and transformed into a humanoid vegetable monster. The titular Swamp Thing then kills Ridge, but the sight of him scared Linda away, leaving Olsen to wander the swamps all alone and green.Though short, the look and concept were popular enough for DC to give Wein and Wrightson a solo series for Swamp Thing. Here they swapped Alex Olsen for Alec Holland and introduce the idea of a "bio-restorative" formula that accelerates plant growth. The origin was basically the same, but involved criminals attacking Holland rather than a jealous coworker.These early stories mostly dealt with Alec/Swamp Thing seeking the men who caused his transformation (and murdered his wife), as well as searching for a cure to his monstrous look. These comics also introduced Abigail Arcane (a character played by Crystal Reed on the DC Universe show), as well as her husband Matt Cable, who befriends the Swamp Thing.The Anatomy LessonIn 1982, Horror director Wes Craven made a live-action Swamp Thing film, the success of which prompted DC to hire young up-and-comer Alan Moore for a new ongoing title. Moore decided to throw everything the readers knew about the Swamp Thing out the window, with the first issue of The Saga of the Swamp Thing literally showing the autopsy of a supposedly deceased Alec Holland. As they cut open the vegetable-human monster, we learn that this is not a human that looks like a plant, but rather "a plant that thought it was Alec Holland. A plant that was trying its level best to be Alec Holland."This, of course, led to a very existential and cosmic comic book that is still regarded as a cult classic today. Moore also went deeper into the horror roots of the character and had Swamp Thing encountering several archetypal horror monsters including vampires, werewolves, and zombies.If this wasn't enough, Moore then added a ton of mythology to the character, starting with making Swamp Thing an avatar of an elemental energy field called "The Green" which connects all plant life on Earth. In order to incorporate Alex Olsen's version of the character into his new continuity, Moore introduced the Parliament of Trees, a council of elders made out of thousands of Swamp Things who in their time all died in a fire and were reborn as plant elementals. This connection to "The Green" added a whole lot of new powers for dear old Swampy, including being able to destroy and build bodies at will and teleport anywhere in the planet instantly. He also could increase his own size to be bigger than Godzilla, and even control the tiniest amount of microscopic algae inside people’s bodies to kill them from the inside.Oh, and he made Swamp Thing fall in love with Abby Arcane, and even had them conceive a child (yeah, don't ask.)Everything Old Is New (52) AgainWhen Scott Snyder took the reins of Swamp Thing following the New 52 reboot, he decided to bring Alec Holland back to life, separating him from the vegetable that called himself Alec. Even if he ends up becoming the green monster eventually, he now has Alec's real consciousness instead of just a copy or replica of it.Snyder introduced the idea of "The Red" which was an energy field for animal life that served as an explanation for Animal Man's powers. He then went further and added "The Black" to give an elemental to death and decay. Most of Snyder's run then dealt with the war between elementals, as we got cool action scenes with characters as powerful as Swamp Thing and an exploration of what balance means when one elemental clearly wants to destroy everything but the other wants to fill the world with life.After Snyder left the series, Charles Soule took over and went even deeper into the mythology. In his run, Soule focused the politics of the Parliament of Trees and the flaws and humanity of Alec Holland as he grows disillusioned with their demands and going to war with them. This run also introduced other elementals, including one for fungal life and an energy field for all machinery.Because of the untimely cancellation of the show, it remains to be seen how much of this mythology Swamp Thing will explore. The showrunners have said they were mostly inspired by Moore's run, so here's hoping the 10 episodes explore at least some of the many, many themes and ideas introduced in the pages of the Swamp Thing, as that's the only space it will get to do so as it will not be renewed for a second season. E3 2019 is about to begin. The annual gaming expo officially kicks off in only a few days, and just as every year, publishers are hanging massive posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center and other buildings throughout downtown LA to hype up the event.GameSpot is now on the ground in LA, and we've taken some pictures of the giant video game posters we've seen decorating the city. After being rumored to release late this year, the launch window for Gears 5 has been officially confirmed. As spotted by GameSpot, one of the massive posters that traditionally surround the LA Convention Center during E3 features Gears 5, and the picture reveals the game's release date will be this fall. We snapped a picture of the poster, which can be viewed below.Gears 5's release date was first hinted at via leaked box art in May 2019 (first noticed by Generation Xbox), which also listed that the game would come out this year on September 10. The box art was eventually confirmed to be real in June 2019 (via a tweet from the Gears of War account), leading to speculation that the accompanying release date leak is also real. September 10 is in the fall, so the leak is looking more and more likely to be true. We'll have to wait and see whether Microsoft confirms that specific date during its E3 2019 press conference, though, or simply reiterates the general Fall 2019 window.Getting a release date for Gears 5 is one of the announcements we wanted to see at E3 this year, largely because we've heard very little about the game since its E3 2018 reveal. We're also hoping Xbox plans on revealing that Gears 5 has a fairly large campaign that increases the scales set by Gears of War 4. Getting a confirmation that Horde mode is returning would be nice too, as would be clarification for Gears 5 role in the growing esports scene.Gears 5 has been confirmed to show up at E3 and is one of the 14 first-party Xbox One titles that Microsoft plans on showcasing during its press conference. Microsoft plans on going big at E3 this year, with rumors that the company press conference will showcase the next-gen Xbox console, a new From Software game featuring a story that George RR Martin consulted on, a fourth Fable game, and a whole lot more.Gears 5 is coming to Xbox One and PC. The latest is a big one, confirming the rumored collaboration between From Software (Dark Souls, Sekiro) and George RR Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series upon which Game of Thrones is based. This new leak suggests the game is called Elden Ring, and the first artwork from it has been published online. Here's what we know before its official announcement.According to Daniel "ZhugeEX" Ahmed, who maintains a reputation for reliably confirming leaked information prior to its official confirmation, Elden Ring is a "new world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin" that is coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Miyazaki is best known for his work as president of From Software, where he's developed Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro.While details on what the game will consist of were not leaked, we do have a leaked image of what appears to be a teaser or key art. Take a look below.Earlier rumors involving Elden Ring (previously identified as GR or Great Rune) described the game as an open-world experience where you explore various kingdoms. Killing the rulers behind each kingdom allows you to unlock their abilities or supernatural powers.The above image supports this rumor by depicting one giant ring of light encompassing several smaller rings, which looks a lot like one circular crown surrounding several smaller ones. There appears to be a pool of energy at the top of the image that drips down in a straight line to the larger ring, perhaps even drawing additional energy from the smaller rings it must pass through. Perhaps Elden Ring sees your hero drawing power from some mysterious source, only to amplify that power in different ways from the other rulers. Although this is speculation on our part, it would certainly fit with From Software's storytelling, as a similar backstory is used for Dark Souls III's High Lord Wolnir--a king who traveled the lands and drew power from the kingdoms he ground into dust.The rumors state that Elden Ring has been in development for three years, making it one of the two games From Software began working on after Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The game is supposedly being officially revealed during Microsoft's E3 2019 press conference, where the company is rumored to debut the next-generation Xbox console and fourth Fable game as well. According to Direct-Feed Games on Twitter, "Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in Fall 2019." Direct-Feed Games also noted that Ni no Kuni would be coming to Nintendo Switch in Fall 2019, according to the leak, though it appears that may not be a remastered version.This leak comes on the heels of several others, all from publisher Bandai Namco.
