Hand of Fate developer Defiant Development is winding down. The Australian studio announced today that it will no longer develop games; the company said it is now "in caretaker mode" to support its existing games instead of developing new ones."When we started this studio, we did so with a clear goal in mind. To hire great people, to create great games and to do that in an ethical manner with respect for our team and our audience," the studio said in a statement. "The Defiant model has always focused on creating games nobody else would. Games that reflected the skills and passions of our team. Games that did something new. Our process has always been focused on iteration and exploration. We go into dark places, searching for hidden treasures. We set out without knowing where the journey will take us, and we do so knowing that the unknown is not always safe."This was a "risky way" to develop games, Defiant acknowledged. "When it succeeds it delivers things you could never have considered possible. When it fails, it leaves you without a safety net," the company said.Unfortunately for Defiant, the studio's nine-year run appears to be coming to an end. It appears staff have been let go, as a smaller team stays on to support Defiant's existing titles, such as Hand of Fate 2 which was released in 2017."Studios rise and studios fall, but people are always more important--to the people of Defiant, staff, friends, families, and partners, thank you. May your futures shine bright, and may you change the world for the better," Defiant said. Finally, Defiant shared a trailer for a brand-new game the studio was working on: A World In My Attic. Unfortunately, it appears this intriguing-looking, adventure-looking game may never see the light of day. For now, you can check out the trailer below.Founded in 2010, Defiant Development also created the mobile games Ski Safari and Heroes Call. The company is based in Brisbane, Australia "because the fantastic weather makes up for the global isolation."While Defiant might be closing down, the company said there is "no question" that Australia remains a great place for independently owned studios to make games. "There are many Australian studios old and new demonstrating that Australian game development is truly world class," the company said.Defiant has reached the end of it's nine year journey.I am exceptionally sad, but that's not really germane. What is important is that some of the best game developers on the planet are now looking for new roles. Please get in touch if you'd like to help them land. https://t.co/0Uudiz8LmU — Morgan Jaffit (@morganjaffit) July 24, 2019 Info from Gamespot.com

Comedian Chris Rock is rebooting/re-imagining the horror movie franchise Saw, and now it's been confirmed that the film is coming sooner than expected. According to Deadline, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have moved the release ahead multiple months. The movie is now expected to hit theatres on May 15, 2020 instead of its previously announced October 23, 2020 release date. This is a change for the Saw franchise, as the eight previous movies were all released in October to capitalize on the spooky vibe of the Halloween season. The movie is described as "Saw on steroids," but it's not clear what that means. The idea came from Rock, who will play a police detective investigating horrible murders. Samuel L. Jackson will also star in the movie as the father of Rock's character. Max Minghella plays Rock's police partner, while Marisol Nichols is playing the police captain boss of Rock's character.Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are executive producers on the new Saw, which is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II). Pete Goldfinder and Josh Stolberg, who wrote the script for the 2017 Saw movie Jigsaw, return to write the script for the new Saw.The first Saw premiered in 2004, and seven sequels followed in seven consecutive years, with Jigsaw rounding out the bunch in 2017. Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled has stormed back into first place in the UK all-format physical sales charts, according to sales monitor Chart-Track. The remastered kart racer gets a little help from Amazon's Prime Day to beat Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, though it should be noted the latter is a Switch exclusive while the former is also available on PS4 and Xbox One, so has a larger potential install base.As a result of those two games' strong chart performance, last week's No.1, Super Mario Maker 2, drops to No.3 for the week ending July 20. Elsewhere, Chart-Track says Prime Day helped 34 of the top 40 games register an increase in sales over last week, with FIFA 19 (No.4), Red Dead Redemption 2 (No.5), and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (No.7) the main beneficiaries. The new Marvel game fared well in our review; critic Richard Wakeling awarded it an 8/10. "More so than its predecessors, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order excels because of its character diversity and the ways its disparate heroes work together," he wrote. "For this reason alone it's an ideal co-op game, whether you're playing with another friend in the same room or with three friends online, but the AI more than holds its own if you're playing alone, too. It falters in places, but there's still nothing quite like the Ultimate Alliance series, and this long-awaited third entry makes it a triumphant return for a superhero brawler that feels more relevant than ever." Read more in our full Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order review. You can read the full top 10 sales chart for this week below, courtesy of UKIE and GfK Chart-Track. Fortnite Battle Royale is preparing to launch Season 10, and has been setting the stage for the changes to come. That will mean a new Battle Pass, changes to the map, and new gameplay mechanics. It's a lot to keep up with all at once, so we've compiled everything we know so far. When Will Fortnite Season 10 Start?Typically a Fortnite season lasts 10 weeks, which would have put the start date for Season 10 within the week of July 15. This season is instead planned to last until August 1, which may be due to the timing of the Fortnite World Cup. Epic may have wanted to reserve any large map changes until after the competition had ended. This will also allow the game to launch its Season 10 during or just after its planned Birthday Event, which will offer special rewards and challenges. Items like birthday cakes and presents will also be scattered around the map, offering health/shield regen and special loot drops. How Much Will the Fortnite Season 10 Battle Pass Cost?As usual, the Season 10 Battle Pass will most likely cost the usual price of 950 V-Bucks. You can buy a bundle of 1,000 V-Bucks for $10/£8, making that roughly the price point for a Battle Pass that will last over the next few months during Season 10. The Battle Pass entitles you to challenges and their associated cosmetic rewards. What's in the Fortnite Season 10 Battle Pass?Season 9 is ongoing, and as usual a big world event has started to set the stage for things to come. This time it was a giant battle pitting a mechanized bear against a huge monster that took place on Saturday, July 20. The robot was apparently built to fend off the monster, and when it showed up the mech automatically activated. The mech powered up by breaking into the Loot Lake vault and taking a powerful orb, then drew a giant sword to defeat the monster and left the monster's body and the sword behind. What all this could mean for Season 10 is still mysterious, however. The themes for the seasonal changeovers are often surprising, so the next season could have nothing to do with mechs, monsters, or giant swords at all. Based on past seasonal events, this stage-setting probably created conditions for some unexpected consequences that will factor into the next big map change Info from Gamespot.com

PC gamers are beginning to lose their patience with juggling multiple clients when they just want to find and launch their games. Trying to figure out which EA games were shifted from Steam to Origin, tackling Uplay, and remembering which games are now Epic Store exclusives has been a cause of frustration for PC players, but there may be a solution. Enter GOG Galaxy 2.0, which promises to unify all of your PC games in one very pretty client.I began using GOG Galaxy when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first came out and while I loved the DRM-free capabilities, the platform itself was buggy and generally not a great user experience. But GOG Galaxy 2.0 looks to be a vastly improved edition, and as the beta isn't open to everybody yet, you can get an inside look in our feature video above. The first thing which is really apparent is that GOG Galaxy 2.0 is gorgeous. The visual and functional overhaul is impressive and heavily customisable. Importing your games creates an insightful and intuitive overview of your collective PC gaming library, and your PlayStation and Xbox libraries for that matter. Currently it's not possible to import any Nintendo games, but for games on every other platform you're able to view your achievements, hours played, and friend's stats. You can also explore your entire gaming library using filters and search parameters. The closed beta doesn't contain every planned feature and as it's receiving constant updates, there are certain things that don't work as intended. There are general bugs, some missing trophies and progress, and Galaxy can occasionally lose its connection to certain clients--but these problems don't outweigh the advantages of the platform, especially how it enables the integration of all your clients into one. This requires some setup as you need to log into each of your clients to connect them to Galaxy, but if you don't consider Captcha software to be your arch nemesis like I do, it's pretty painless.Finishing the process rewards you with a comprehensive gold mine of your own data and a client that will never have you scratching your head trying to remember what platform Mass Effect 2 is on ever again. Once you link your platforms your library auto-populates with art, playtime stats, and achievements. There are gaps where art is missing, but icon and background art can be imported straight from your computer. You can boot games from GOG Galaxy 2.0 but you do still need to wait for the original client to get running in the background. My wait times varied by platform, with Steam proving to be the fastest and least intrusive third-party platform to integrate. Some clients like Origin and Uplay still insist on popping up on your desktop when you try to launch a game from either platform, but a feature is in the works which will automatically close clients when exiting an associated game. Galaxy does let you install games straight from the launcher, but of course if you want to buy the latest Epic Store exclusive, for instance, you'll still need to take yourself over to its specific store to buy it.The only time you'll really run into a problem is if you haven't enabled your clients and games to auto-update. I don't auto-update my platforms or games because I still remember getting yelled at for using up all our family's data when I was a teenager living at home so booting a game like The Division 2 can mean waiting for Uplay to update and run and then waiting for the game itself to update and run. Bonus points if Galaxy also required an update at launch. Fortunately, sifting through the piles of data in GOG Galaxy 2.0 to find out which game I've logged the most time in--145 hours in Divinity: Original Sin II apparently--is a perfectly good time waster while waiting on those progress bars. Generally, you'll want to make sure you are auto-updating so you don't run into this problem, in which case you should sail right into the game with far less waiting around. I did most of my gaming offline and away from distribution platforms until the 2000s so while GOG can't paint me a perfect data-riffic picture of all the weekends I spent playing Heroes of Might & Magic III or Age of Empires II from dawn until dusk, there is still plenty of stats to check out. It's worth noting that GOG Galaxy 2.0 isn't the first all-in-one launcher. Playnite is an open source library manager that imports games from all of your platforms into one and while by all accounts it does the trick, GOG Galaxy 2.0 has some special additions under its pretty hood. Galaxy includes a bookmark function that lets you pin games, genres, or custom tagged groups to your sidebar. Custom tags can be created instantly and you can group together whatever strange amalgamation of games you choose. There are also plenty of UI options like filtering by platform, operating system, tags, or whether or not the game is installed. The platform is also open-source allowing for community-made plug-ins which should enable clever users to expand the breadth of what GOG Galaxy 2.0 is capable of.Overall the process is as streamlined and well-executed as you'd expect from a beta. You can hide games in your library, which I did for trials, and if you own a game on multiple platforms it'll combine the stats under one page for you. As a space to hold your half a dozen gaming libraries it's entirely sufficient and missing trophies or sluggish boot times from certain platforms don't take away from how much easier it makes modern PC gaming. Galaxy is also intending to integrate your friends from other platforms into the client which CD Project says could extend to sending a message to a friend on PS4 who receives it instantly, but this functionality is yet to be implemented.A handful of years ago I couldn't imagine GOG Galaxy working for me as a replacement for Steam, despite how much I loved the DRM-free and offline play options, but Galaxy 2.0 is a vastly different beast. It may not have the library to replace your existing platforms, but the relative ease with which it unifies all your clients means that, at least for me, playing my PC games through GOG Galaxy 2.0 from now on is looking to be a no brainer. Sega has teased something new for the Yakuza series, setting the debut date in August. The new game will seemingly introduce an all-new protagonist now that Kazuma Kiryu's story has concluded, but the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has indulged in teasing the fans about the new game.A tweet promises a press conference to be held in Japan on August 29. The announcement was accompanied by an image of Ichiban Kasuga, the protagonist Yakuza Online, suggesting he'll factor into the game somehow. It's unclear if this will be considered the next mainline Yakuza game or a spin-off, or even additional content for Yakuza Online.【抽選で15名様をご招待!】PS4『龍が如く最新作』記者発表会に『#龍オン 』ユーザーの皆さまを抽選で15名様限定で特別にご招待します! That game detailed his backstory as a former Tojo Yakuza released from prison prison, now having to find his way through a changed world. The last game developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio released was Judgement. Though Judgment was a very different game from the rest of the Yakuza series, it added a similar flavor to the world and came with mechanics of its own, with mixed results."It's disappointing to realize that Judgment is at its best when it veers closer to the mold that it came from," Edmond Tran wrote in GameSpot's review. "Even though the game's familiar fighting and side activities will happily keep you occupied, it's a shame that the most intriguing and unique additions are also the dullest things about Judgment, because the new roster of characters have been wonderfully crafted otherwise. Yagami, Kaito, and the supporting cast are incredibly endearing, and following their every move as they unravel the sinister machinations looming under the surface of Kamurocho is a sensational journey. I can't wait to return to these characters, but I'm hoping we can all do something different next time."Info from Gamespot.com

August is almost here, and that means a whole new batch of movies, TV shows, and originals will be released on Netflix. In July, the highlight of the streaming service was Season 3 of Stranger Things, which is undoubtedly the company's most popular original series. However, August sees the release of numerous high-profile original series you'll want to check out.The first of these major releases is Season 3 of GLOW on August 9. In the newest season, the women of the professional wrestling league head to Las Vegas to perform a nightly show. However, it's not as fun as previous seasons, as I said in my GLOW review: "The latest offering of Netflix's comedic drama feels less fun than previous seasons. Tonally, it's much more serious, dealing with these character's life-altering problems rather than the goofiness of trying to figure out what professional wrestling is or putting on an entertaining show. The show steps away from actual wrestling, even when wrestling is a daily event for these women, which is a strange choice."On August 16, Mindhunter returns to Netflix for a second season. It's a true crime series following a FBI hostage negotiator during the late '70s who starts the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit using criminal psychology to find and track serial killers. Season 1 revolved around interviewing imprisoned murderers like Bill Kemper. Season 2 follows a string of child murders in Atlanta that took place between 1979-81. Season 1 of Mindhunter was incredibly captivating and one of our favorite shows of 2017.Finally, on August 30, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance arrives. This Netflix original is actually a prequel to Jim Henson's 1982 classic The Dark Crystal. The original film was incredibly dark, following a mystical planet with two warring factions the evil Skeksis and the wizards called urRu. The prequel series will follow three elf-like Gelflings who rise up to rebel against the Skeksis.Obviously, there is a lot more headed to the service thoughout August, but there are plenty of movies that are leaving as well. You only have a matter of weeks to watch Final Destination 1-3 (leaving August 1), No Country for Old Men (August 11), The 40-Year Old Virgin (August 16), and plenty of other classic movies. Viz Media has released a new gameplay trailer for Cat Lady, an upcoming dungeon crawler developed by Rose City Games. You can watch the trailer above. The trailer showcases Cat Lady protagonist Ally Marie reaching her grandmother's house, only to discover all of the household items have been possessed by ghosts and have kidnapped her grandma. Her grandmother's cats--who all can now talk--convince Ally that they must go save her relative. As Ally makes her way through her grandma's house, she utilizes different combinations of cats to combat the ghosts, as each feline has a unique special ability. The wizard cat Mildred can shoot powerful fireballs, for instance, while the kissy cat Nelly sends out hearts in a wider shotgun-like spread.Cat Lady is the second scheduled release in a deal that Viz Media has with Rose City Games to develop three games that incorporate a manga- or anime-like art style. The first game, The World Next Door, is a visual-novel-meets-puzzle-battle game where human teenager Jun becomes trapped in a world of fantasy and magic and must rely on the new friends she meets to try and find a way home. The third game has yet to be announced.According to the gameplay trailer, Cat Lady is expected to release "soon." Launch platforms have not yet been announced.A manga publisher, Viz Media has long existed on the fringes of the gaming industry and is responsible for some of the most popular manga adaptations of several gaming franchises, including The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon. When the company isn't focused on games, it's primarily responsible for publishing English translations of shonen manga in the west--such as My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, One Piece, and Dragon Ball.In GameSpot's The World Next Door review, I wrote, "The cast of characters is genuinely funny at times, and getting to know them has its benefits, but the story ends before most have a chance to really grow and mature. Worse, an interesting plot point that Liza introduces into the story near the game's end is never satisfyingly resolved. The combat portion has similar shortcomings. Though the puzzle battles are frantic bouts of fast-paced fun, the most interesting enemies and bosses are introduced in the latter half of the game, leaving combat in the first two dungeons too simple. Ultimately, there's enjoyment to be had with The World Next Door, but the game takes too long to start leaning into its strengths."Info from Gamespot.com

Since All Elite Wrestling's inception at the beginning of 2019, fans have been wondering when they'll be getting a weekly, televised series. Back in May, it was revealed at the WarnerMedia upfronts that AEW will be coming to TNT--the former home of WCW programming during the '90s and early '00s. And now, we know that starting in October, TNT will host a weekly AEW wrestling program. On Wednesday, October 2 at 8 PM ET, AEW's weekly programming will premiere live on the network. As detailed in a press release, each episode of the new series will air for two hours, and the very first one will take place in Washington D.C. at the Capital One Arena. Ticket on-sale date and pricing for the inaugural event will be announced on Monday, July 29 at 12 PM ET on AEW's social media platforms, such as the company's main Twitter and AEW on TNT accounts. The announcement also featured a video reveal, highlighting this past year's accomplishments for the wrestling promotion. This includes the press conferences and events which have begun to take place monthly like Double or Nothing, Fyter Fest, and Fight for the Fallen. Check it out below. What sets AEW apart from other wrestling promotions is that the company is run by wrestlers, with the backing of President, CEO, and wrestling fan Tony Kahn. Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson), and Kenny Omega serve as executive vice presidents for the company and Brandi Rhodes serves as chief brand officer. The company features plenty of familiar faces for longtime wrestling fans--aside from the aforementioned. Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose in WWE), Awesome Kong (Kharma), Shawn Spears (Tye Dillinger) and Dustin Rhodes (Goldust) all perform in the promotion with legendary commentator Jim Ross joining the fold as well. However, AEW isn't just about bringing in former WWE talent. All Elite Wrestling highlights some of the best performers from around the world from Japan to Mexico to the United States, and that includes prehistoric dinosaurmen being ridden by boys from the jungle. Additionally, the past two PPV events were streamed for free on Bleacher Report Live, and while that most likely won't continue once the TNT series begins, it's been nice to see a company offering its services to those around the world for free. For those looking for something different in wrestling, AEW may be perfect for them, when the weekly series starts on October 2 on TNT.Info from Gamespot.com

Destiny 2's Solstice of Heroes event begins on July 30, and now we know what to expect from the last big event of the Season of Opulence and the game's second year of content. You'll be chasing a special set of Solstice armor for your characters, but instead of just earning the gear, you'll need to upgrade it by completing a number of objectives and participating in a new activity that's specific to Solstice. There are also a variety of new cosmetic rewards to acquire during the event, with Destiny 2 seeing a new approach to its premium Eververse Store to go with them.Bungie laid out all the details of the Solstice of Heroes in a post on its blog that included a trailer, which you can watch below. The event starts with picking up a special set of Solstice armor, which is in a pretty rough state when you first get it. You'll need to complete Solstice objectives to upgrade the armor, slowly improving it until you can get it to its Masterworked "Majestic" state. You'll have until Solstice of Heroes ends on August 27 to complete it.Bungie also explained that the Solstice armor set will be the first "Armor 2.0" set available in its upcoming new expansion, Shadowkeep. Armor 2.0 is Destiny 2's upcoming new armor system, which allows you to transfer the properties of one set of armor to another set--essentially allowing you to wear armor you like the look of, not just what has the best stat and perk random rolls. When Shadowkeep launches in September, you'll be able to pick up the Solstice Armor 2.0 set, provided you earn and upgrade the whole thing during the event.Upgrading that armor will take you to a new area for Solstice called the EAZ, or European Aerial Zone--essentially a version of the EDZ that's in Destiny 2 already, but composed of a bunch of floating platforms. A matchmade Solstice activity takes place there that has you and two other players fighting a bunch of mini-bosses to receive treasure chest rewards. The more bosses you kill, the more chests you get; the whole thing sounds a bit like the Haunted Forest and Verdant Forest activities from past events.Solstice also adds a new elementally themed mechanic to the game. As you play different activities in Destiny 2, you'll see orbs dropping that align with your elemental subclass. Pick them up and you'll access additional buffs that are specific to the element you're using. It sounds like gathering these orbs will be part of the process of powering up your Solstice armor as well.Solar orbs generate a damaging wave around you as you playVoid orbs allow you to go invisible and give you Truesight to see through walls when you crouchArc orbs enhance your movement speed and melee and sword damageThere's one more big change coming to the Solstice of Heroes, which might give a hint of what players can expect from the upcoming Shadowkeep expansion. Most seasonal events come with event-specific Eververse engrams for players to earn as they level up, which give them random drops of event-specific cosmetic items. That's not the case in Solstice, though--instead, there will be no Solstice engrams, and all event cosmetics will be available for purchase from the Eververse store with either Bright Dust or Silver, Destiny's premium currency. That might be a hint at the shape of things to come as Bungie changes its approach to Destiny 2 microtransactions. We know Bungie is about to greatly change how Bright Dust works, making it so you solely earn it from playing the game (rather than from breaking down Eververse items you could have purchased with Silver). We might get a hint at the limits of how you can use Bright Dust in Solstice, and how much of the Eververse Store will require you to use Silver, which you can only purchase with real money. Then again, this might just be a weird limbo period between system changes, but either way, things are going to be different than usual with Solstice of Heroes--and every different with the launch of Shadowkeep on September 17.Info from Gamespot.com

Pokemon Go's July Community Day may have only recently ended, but developer Niantic has already announced the first details for next month's event--and it's coming up very soon. August's Community Day is set to take place next Saturday, August 3, and this time, the featured Pokemon will be Ralts, a Psychic-type originally introduced in Ruby and Sapphire.Throughout the Community Day, Ralts will spawn in the wild much more often than normal, making the event a good opportunity to stock up on Ralts Candy. Not only will the monster be much easier to find during the Community Day, you'll also have your first chance to capture its Shiny form in Pokemon Go.In addition to increased spawns, each Community Day offers players a chance to secure a special event-exclusive move if you're able to evolve the featured Pokemon into its final form by the end of the event. Interestingly, Ralts has two possible final evolutions--Gardevoir or Gallade--so it's not yet clear if the event move will differ depending upon which form you evolve it into. Niantic typically announces each month's Community Day move closer to the event.Pokemon Go Shadow Pokemon: Guide To Catching And PurifyingPokemon Go Adds Team Rocket And Shadow PokemonA few other bonuses will also be available during August's Community Day. Any Lure Modules you use will last for three hours rather than their usual 30 minutes, and Pokemon Eggs will hatch at a quarter of the distance they typically require. While each Community Day typically runs from 3-6 PM local time, August's will take place a little later in the day to help players escape the summer heat. Like July's event, next month's Community Day will run from 4-7 PM local time, when the temperature outside is a little bit cooler. Niantic says the Community Day hours will return to normal once summer is over. While August's Community Day is still a few days away, another event is underway in Pokemon Go. Until July 29, players can capture a Pikachu wearing a straw hat as part of a One Piece collaboration event. Meanwhile, the game's current Legendary Pokemon, Armored Mewtwo, is scheduled to leave Raid Battles on July 31. Not only does this version of the Legendary sport a different look than a regular Mewtwo, it also has different stats and is capable of learning different attacks.Info from Gamespot.com

One of the Nintendo Switch's most appealing features is its portability, but with such a big screen, it's at high risk of getting scratched or otherwise damaged if you're not careful with how you transport it. Whether you're bringing it with you on a train, plane, bus, or even in a car, having a hard-cover case is essential. There are countless case options out there, but today, we're spotlighting possibly the most attractive Nintendo Switch case we've ever seen: the Hori Alumi case with a gold-and-black Legend of Zelda-inspired design. Normally listed at $25, it's only $17 on Amazon right now and comes with free one-day shipping if you're a Prime member.See it at AmazonAn officially licensed Nintendo product, the Hori Alumi case is heavy-duty and durable, with a smooth, brushed aluminum hard shell to protect your Switch screen from scrapes. The gold accents along the zipper and in the artwork are stunning, and the black-and-gold design continues on the inside as well. The inner case also includes a padded pocket for storing small accessories and up to five game cards. One drawback of the Hori Alumi case is that it doesn't have as much storage as some other cases on the market, so if you care about keeping more than five games on you or carrying extra accessories like Joy-Cons or a charger, you may want to consider other options. Its main strengths are its durability, as Hori's cases are constructed with high-quality aluminum rather than nylon or foam, as well as its eye-catching Zelda design. In case you're curious, we've gathered a few other Switch cases on sale at Amazon right now, as they include other features such as more game card slots or more storage to carry the dock and controllers (however, that means they're a bit more bulky to travel with). The Vikena Deluxe Switch Travel Case is a particularly good option as well, as it features storage for the Switch, dock, a Pro controller, a Joy-Con controller grip, AC adapter, 18 game card slots, and more--and it's over 50% off right now. You can check out that case and other options below.RDS Industries Switch Carrying Case, Black Ballistic Nylon Exterior -- $31.02 ($40)Vikena Deluxe Switch Travel Case -- $29 ($60)JETech Switch Carrying Case -- $10 ($20)AmazonBasics Hard Shell Switch Travel Case -- $23 ($26)Info from Gamespot.com

It's been 35 years since the first issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic was released, after being created by Kevin Eatman and Peter Laird as a means of entertaining each other. Against all odds, though, the property remains a beloved franchise, with seemingly every generation having their own version of the Ninja Turtles.Whether it's the original film, any of the animated series, a number of comic book lines, or even the live concert tour, it's hard to think of a time in the last three decades where the Ninja Turtles weren't somewhere in pop culture. According to Eastman, who sat down to speak with GameSpot at San Diego Comic-Con, it wasn't by design. "When we did the first comic, we thought that if we sold 200 copies that would be fantastic," he admitted. That's due, in large part, to the fans that have never let go of the franchise and continue to introduce it to new generations. During his interview with GameSpot, Eastman spoke about those fans, the arrival of a female turtle, and collaborating with other creators--from Jim Henson to those in charge of the current show, Rise of the TMNT--to make sure the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise always stays true to its roots.GameSpot: It's 2019 and the Ninja Turtles have a crossover movie with Batman, Rise of the TMNT on Nickelodeon, a popular comic book, and toys that are still all over stores. When you and co-creator Peter Laird thought this idea up in a garage 35 years ago, did you have any idea it would have this lasting appeal?Kevin Eastman: My goodness no. I always go back to the original [TMNT] comic that Peter [Laird] and I did. It really made me feel like it was a lot of things responsible for this longevity, but 99% of them are the fans, period. It's just one of those things that whatever resonated initially back then is somehow still finding its way into that soft spot in fans today, 35 years later. When we did the first comic, we thought that if we sold 200 copies that would be fantastic and that would be great, and then we'd go on to the next thing. The fact that it worked the first time, found its audience base and kids as toys and cartoons and all that stuff, and the movies, was fantastic. 20 years later, it found a new generation with the stuff that we've done, so every generation sort of had their version of the Turtles, right up to [Rise of the TMNT]. So to me, it goes back to the fans, in that I would say you can't tell a child what's cool and what's not cool. They decide. And the fact that there's still something about [Ninja Turtles] that people like is mind-blowing to me in every sense of the word.GameSpot: The comic book movie genre is a very crowded space in 2019, but times were different back in 1990 when the original film was released. How involved did you get to be in adapting them for live-action back then?Kevin Eastman: Well, we were very lucky. Our mentors and our inspirations--guys like Jack Kirby--not only did they not own [their creations], they didn't participate in what was done with them in other types of entertainment [mediums]. So we knew how lucky we were [to have] owned and controlled all aspects of our characters, whether it be the comic series, the final design of the toys, the 300 cartoon episodes we worked on, [or] all those movies. We wanted full and complete say, so we had treatment approval, script approval, and we had final look of the Turtles approval.Hollywood at the time, even then they were like, "Who do you think you are?" And we're like, "We think we're exactly who we are. We created these characters and it's not that important for us to do a movie on your terms, but if you want to do a movie on our terms, we're willing to have that discussion." Luckily for us, before they thought we had big of egos and threw us out, we were really like, "Look, so we have a vision of what these characters need to look like."We saw too many of our favorite superhero movies ruined by people that thought they knew better than the fans that loved them in the first place. But Steve Barron came on as a director and he really loved the original black and white comics and he sort of rooted it based in reality of some of the early versions. Jim Henson's Creature Shop, that was a miracle that they came in. They're the reason that they brought those characters to life and had them work as well as they did and it was just a perfect storm of Steve Barron, Todd Langen who wrote it, and Jim Henson that just made that movie a great movie that was good for all audiences. That to me will always be the pinnacle of all sorts of entertainment, was that first movie.GameSpot: As someone who grew up watching The Muppet Show, it's so bizarre to think about you working with Jim Henson to come up with how these things look in live-action.Kevin Eastman: Isn't that crazy? It is. We've seen those movies [where] the costumes don't work [and] you don't buy into that world. You might go, "Look, I know it's a person in a rubber suit." I knew that stuff, but if you're allowed to get past that, fully invested in that--especially for kids because they're pretty smart anyway. But yeah, [Henson's] work made it come to life.GameSpot: For the franchise, that was a strange time, because you couldn't look anywhere without having Ninja Turtles somewhere in your line of vision. There was even a concert tour. Are there any memories that stand out for you from that time of the popularity?Kevin Eastman: Well there were several, and actually I quite liked the evolution of the Coming Out of Their Shells tour because it's not Barney on tour or Disney on Ice--there was always these wonderful kid events. It was gauged as something that would be fun as a kid's event. I loved how it evolved with the songs. But I think you know back in those days--what we call it was the peak years of the Turtles--it might be at that time in '91, '92. I went to Paris to be part of the promotion for the first Turtle movie, but I just remember standing there the first time looking at the Eiffel Tower and going, "This is incredible!" But then seeing an advertisement for "Tortues Ninja," the new Turtles movie coming out. So that was a weird sort of thing, being in such an amazing place, the names of all that I love and appreciate from art history. And here I am standing, looking at the Eiffel Tower with an ad for my characters next to it.But there was so many other pleasant experiences or weird juxtaposition of things like that, but all [are] blessings, every single one of them. The things I've done and seen, the people I've met and I've traveled the world and get to meet fans from all over the world and it's always the same. They just love their turtles and that's changed my life. I can't imagine what an amazing life I've had thanks to them.GameSpot: Looking at other character designs, how involved do you get to be when it comes to developing the turtles for their various TV animation styles?Kevin Eastman: Well like I said, in the early days we had full control for that work. But I sold my interest 15-plus years ago, so what's been great is that although I have no final say, you have a wonderful company like Nickelodeon who wants to bring that original element of the creators back in. So they brought me in to consult on the series and I work on the comic books and they want my input. The thing is that they don't have to have my input. They own it and control it but it's their commitment to make it right, to make it good, but still keep the heart and soul back from the original creation. So it's been fantastic to see these different versions and work with guys like [Rise of the TMNT producers] Ant [Ward] and Andy [Suriano] or [producer] Ciro [Nieli] on the 2012 series because they're all coming from the same sweet spot [that] these are characters that they're invested in, that they love, and they want to tell great stories [about]. So they're in really good hands already.GameSpot: It was recently announced that the female character Jennika in the comics had become a mutant turtle. Some fans will certainly remember Venus from Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. Will we see anything traits from that character makes their way into the Jennika character?Kevin Eastman: Well what's interesting is the difference--like Venus is now 20. That context is 20-something years old. It was 1997 when that came out. But now it's a new spin. It was an interesting time because we were still in control but we were sharing the control with Haim Saban, and [he had] success with the Power Rangers. I'll say a term as endearing as I can, the campiness of the Power Rangers is what made those [shows] so popular. So he wanted Turtles to take the turn more like a live-action cartoon as opposed to trying to find a balance. I think the resistance there came from the hardcore fans because that was the first version after the original animated series. The fans were not happy. They didn't like Venus as a character. It was sort of put in their face and the show was way too campy. I loved the series, I worked very hard on it. But it just didn't resonate with the fans.Congratulations to the creative team of #TMNT! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #95 is now sold out at the distributor level and going to 2nd print! Until then, head over to your local comic shop and pick-up your copy…rumor has it there’s a huge cliff hanger! 👀🐢 pic.twitter.com/PjYdajBoIA — IDW Publishing (@IDWPublishing) July 8, 2019What was interesting when we evolved into the character Jennika--much like what Ciro's approach to the 2012 series, Ant and Andy's approach to the Rise--my focus is on the comic books with Tom Waltz and IDW and it's always story first, story-centric. So when we introduce a character in Issue 51 named Jennika, we really like her and we knew that if the fans liked her as much as we did, she can continue as part of the family. She got more and more popular and so for about 30 issues we wanted to evolve her into this female turtle character. We've been thinking about this for two-and-a-half years and planning it. And so we knew that because of her popularity and because of the same story-driven aspect that we said, people will buy because they've already bought into the story. They're already fully invested in the characters and they love her as a character--to see her evolve organically to become this character instead of, "Hey we need to sell more issues. Here's a girl turtle!" So it's very story-centric and it has exceeded our hopes in that we hope that they would embrace her. We hope that they'll like it because we have so much fun doing it and they go nuts so it's been a great blessing. This interview has been edited for clarity and length.Info from Gamespot.com
