When it comes to adapting a video game into a live-action adventure, it's a tricky proposition. After all, you have to create something a mainstream audience can invest in while making sure fans of the source material are satisfied. Bargain bins are filled with examples of movies that missed the mark, but Showtime is betting it can right the wrongs of previous adaptations with its upcoming Halo TV show.Speaking to press at the TCA press tour, Showtime Networks co-president Gary Levine revealed casting announcements for the character of Cortana, among others, and detailed how the show plans to appeal to fans of the Halo games. "The good news is we've been working very closely with 343 [Studios] through the entire development process," he explained. "And they are there both as a resource to tell us stuff we don't know and also to make sure we're not violating anything big in the canon. So we're doing this with total confidence that the fans are going to embrace what we're doing."He also noted that while the graphic content of the show will be along the lines of what's seen in other Showtime series--"PG-13," as he put it--"violence is going to have consequence." When it comes to a war between the USNC and the Covenant, that's reassuring to hear. The big question remains whether we'll see Master Chief's face on the new show, though. When GameSpot asked Levine about it a year ago, he teased Chief's potential unmasking as "a key question and an important part of our series."While Levine still won't reveal whether viewers will see the character's face, American Gods alum Pablo Schreiber has been cast in the role. What that in mind, we asked what made the actor such a good fit for a potentially faceless part. "What I love about Pablo is he has the physicality to be a Spartan, to be Master Chief," Levine explained. "But he is A: a great dramatic actor and B: he's got such a twinkle in his eyes. [He's] so good with wit and comedy. And we want the Master Chief to have that range. And Pablo brings the range."It's still too early to tell, given that Halo doesn't begin production until the fall. Our money's on Chief taking off his mask to show viewers that "twinkle in his eyes," though.Halo is scheduled to debut on Showtime in 2021.Disclosure: Showtime is owned by CBS, the parent company of GameSpot.Info from Gamespot.com

When Jurassic World first hit theaters in 2015, reviving the Jurassic Park franchise that had stalled out 14 years earlier, it ushered in a new era of dinosaur adventures. Now, the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios Hollywood has gotten the same treatment, and fans of the franchise can cast themselves in the chaos. When Jurassic Park: The Ride first opened at Universal's Southern California theme park in 1996, it became an instant favorite. After all, it's hard not to love a boat ride with a massive drop. As the years went on, though, and Jurassic Park strayed further from popular culture, the attraction's luster faded. Then Jurassic World happened, sparking a total revamp of the ride. But theme park enthusiast can be a fickle bunch, especially when it comes to changing a ride they grew up with. So how do you approach a project like the Jurassic World ride without losing what made the original so special to visitors? "Very carefully," senior director and executive producer at Universal Creative Jon Corfino said.Speaking to GameSpot at the new ride's grand opening, Corfino explained that the key to making sure Jurassic World lived up to its predecessor was a collaboration. "We worked very closely with [Jurassic World director] Colin Trevorrow [and producer] Frank Marshall--really, the guardians of this franchise and brand--because you gotta stay close to the DNA," he said. "And their contributions were essential because they were very focused on sticking with the initial awe and wonder starting point."A lot of that awe and wonder from the original Jurassic Park ride remains intact, with guests coming face-to-face with a variety of peaceful animatronic dinosaurs before things go horribly wrong and the more chaotic of the dinos mess everything up. A lot of these elements, in particular, are pulled right out of the original version of the ride--including numerous dinosaur interactions. However, even with nods to the original ride, Jurassic World stands on its own. For instance, the brand new first scene on the attraction drops gusts into an aquarium where the massive Mosasaurus is seen feeding on a shark. It's a fun moment and one that immediately calls the 2015 movie to mind, given it featured this particular dinosaur. It also happens to be thrilling, thanks to some cleverly-placed water cannons that serve a dual purpose of teasing the danger that's to come and getting riders very wet.Another aspect of the ride helping to distinguish Jurassic World from its predecessor is the inclusion of the movie's stars. In the line queue, as well as on the ride itself, you'll see the characters played by Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and BD Wong appearing in videos.According to Corfino, including the cast in the new ride was essential to its authenticity. "Whenever you're dealing with a brand like this, you have to stay authentic. And it just wouldn't have been right to not have them," he said. "So we were able to put together an idea, work with them, get them involved, which was absolutely fantastic. They were tremendous partners. Chris and Bryce were such a hoot. Their chemistry together off-screen was fantastic, much less on-screen. B.D. Wong was fantastic. And it sets the whole tone. It just wouldn't be right without them."Jurassic World: The Ride is open now at Universal Studios Hollywood.Info from Gamespot.com

Xur's arrival in Destiny 2 doesn't generate quite the same level of excitement as it used to, now that we're nearing the end of the game's second year. Most players who login to Destiny regularly already have most or all the Exotic weapons and armor the weekend vendor carries--which are those from Destiny 2 Year One and the Forsaken expansion. Anything newer isn't available, which means if you've been playing Destiny for a long time, there's usually no reason to bother tracking Xur down.Sometimes, though, Xur's wares are worth checking out. While Exotic weapons in Destiny 2 always have the same perks, Exotic armor gets random perks--which means that Xur's version of an Exotic helmet or pair of boots might be slightly different from the one you already have. This week, Xur showed up in the Tower in Destiny 2 with a great role on an Exotic piece of armor, and if you play Titan, you should pick it up.Head to the Tower's Hangar to find Xur, who is positioned on a catwalk on the north end. You're going to want to pick up the Exotic helmet he's offering called One-Eyed Mask. This Exotic is great for the Crucible: its special perk marks enemies who damage you, and if you track them down and get your revenge, you're granted a damage boost and an overshield. That makes One-Eyed Mask a favorite in Destiny 2's competitive modes by itself, but Xur's version has another great perk: Enhanced Hand Cannon Targeting.Targeting buffs in Destiny 2 make guns more accurate, boosting their Target Acquisition stat--which basically helps you land headshots. The Enhanced version of those perks are pretty rare, so to get one on an Exotic helmet is great. The Hand Cannon version, though, is probably the best for Crucible. Most of the best PvP guns in Destiny 2 are hand cannons, like Not Forgotten and Luna's Howl. This combination of perks makes One-Eyed Mask a pretty phenomenal find, especially if you're preparing to head into the Crucible to grind Destiny 2's current seasonal event, the Solstice of Heroes. The Mask will run you 23 Legendary shards, so hurry over and pick it up--you only have until the weekly reset on Tuesday, August 6, to make your purchase.Info from Gamespot.com

The CW's upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which will bring the various Arrow-verse shows together for their biggest showdown yet, just got a bit more interesting. It was announced at the TCA press tour that none other than Bruce Wayne himself would finally appear in the universe. What's even more exciting is who will play the role. Batman: The Animated Series star Kevin Conroy will appear as a version of Bruce Wayne from the future. It's interesting to note that the press release from The CW notes this Bruce is from the future. That means he likely won't be the version Batwoman's Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) is familiar with. It was not revealed whether he would also portray Batman.Conroy joins Burt Ward as previous Batman stars that will appear in Crisis. Additionally, Legends of Tomorrow star Brandon Routh will suit up as Superman--a role he played in 2006's Superman Returns. The CW has also revealed that stars of Black Lightning will finally join the Arrow-verse in the crossover. In its first two seasons, the show was kept separate from the rest of the network's DC Entertainment shows. With Crisis, though, it'll be joining the pack.Crisis on Infinite Earths will air over five episodes of TV. It kicks off with the December 8 episode of Supergirl, followed by Batwoman on December 9, and The Flash on December 10. Then, the event will conclude with installments of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on January 14.Info from Gamespot.com

As production on the final season of Arrow rolls on, the end of the series is in sight. The CW series that launched a universe of superhero TV shows is ready to go out with a bang, though how it's going to do that remains a mystery. There's one thing executive producer Marc Guggenheim cleared up after a panel for the show at the TCA press tour, though. The final episodes of Arrow will not be tied up in the fallout of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover that will help close the series out."I would say Episode 9 is very specific. We know exactly what happens in it. It's not related to the crossover," Guggenheim explained to a small group of press. "And it's too early for me to talk about exactly what that episode is. But it's, you know, if we do it right, it'll be really special. And then Episode 10 will be a proper series finale."This should be good news for fans who were less than enthused when Arrow's 100th episode fell right in the middle of the 2016 Invasion crossover event. Instead of being too deeply entrenched in Crisis, Arrow will instead get to end on its own terms. The even more exciting news is about what one of those terms will be.There's been plenty of fan speculation about John Diggle (David Ramsey) ending up as the Green Lantern in the Arrow-verse. Then, in 2018's Elseworlds crossover event, the show directly referenced a possible connection between the two characters. While the chances of a full-blown Green Lantern series starring Ramsey are slim at best, Arrow isn't done having a bit of fun with the possibility."We've got we have a very specific moment in mind for the series finale, that our hope is it'll be satisfying to the fans, without getting me in trouble with my bosses at Warner Brothers," Guggenheim teased of Diggle's connection to Green Lantern.Arrow returns to The CW on October 15.Info from Gamespot.com

Bandai Namco made a number of big announcements for SoulCalibur VI during EVO 2019. Producer Motohiro Okubo appeared on the stage to first announce that Cassandra will be joining the fray as a DLC character. The much-loved Athenian warrior will be available from August 5 and looks to have the same quick but deadly fighting style, utilizing her sword and shield combination to overwhelm her opponents. On top of that, Bandai Namco also revealed Season 2 of Soul Calibur VI, which includes a new gameplay system. While it didn't go into detail on what exactly the new mechanic will entail, it looked to be a new counter of some sort. Okubo said that more details on Season 2 will be revealed in the future.Season 2 of SoulCalibur VI also means a new pass to purchase and, by doing so, players will get access to four new characters. One of these characters is Haohmaru of Samurai Shodown and Samurai Spirits fame. The swordsman can currently be seen and played in the latest Samurai Shodown from SNK, which was released in June 2019 and also had an exciting tournament at Evo.SoulCalibur VI launched in October 2018 and received favorable reviews. In GameSpot's SoulCalibur VI review, the game was awarded an 8/10."SoulCalibur VI is a fighting game that's easy to recommend," it says. "Like all the best titles in the genre, it has a low barrier to entry and high skill ceiling. For those looking to get in a few games with friends it's welcoming and immediately enjoyable."For those committed to ploughing the depths of its systems to get tournament ready, it has plenty to unpack and understand. Better still, those that want to play alone will find SoulCalibur VI has some of the most substantial single-player content in any fighting game today." Info from Gamespot.com

SNK has announced that King of Fighters XV is in development. The surprise announcement was made at EVO 2019, the fighting game tournament that sees players from across the world compete to be crowned the best in a variety of games. The announcement was just a logo of the game, along with the confirmation that the sequel was in the works. No further details on when the game would be released or what platforms it will be available for were revealed. A logo is all we've got, but for fans of the long-running fighting game franchise, it will no doubt be exciting. It's been around three years since the last King of Fighters was released. When King of Fighters XIV arrived in 2016, GameSpot awarded it an 8/10. "With plenty of opportunities available online or off, KOF 14 is a well-executed addition to the revered fighting series," said Matt Espineli in his KOF 14 review. "Those disappointed in its new visuals may be unwilling to give it a chance, but if you remain steadfast in parsing through the multiple layers of its mechanics, you'll be rewarded with one of the most accessible, satisfying entries in the series to date." The latest weekend box office numbers are in, and the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham, opened to a massive number. The action film took in $60.8 million during its US/Canada opening this weekend, which made it far and away the biggest movie of the weekend, according to box office numbers from Entertainment Weekly. Hobbs & Shaw made a further $120 million from its overseas opening to bring its global haul to $180 million after just one weekend. As it happens, $180 million is also the estimated production budget of Hobbs & Shaw.At $60.8 million in North America, Hobbs & Shaw performed substantially lower than almost every other movie in the series, but that is to be expected given it is a spinoff. The movie also features Idris Elba as the villain, alongside Helen Mirren, Eiza Gonzalez, and Eddie Marsan. The entire Fast & Furious franchise has now made more than $5 billion in box office receipts worldwide since it premiered all the way back in 2009. Halo Infinite is releasing in Holiday 2020 as a launch title for Microsoft's new and more powerful next-generation console, Project Scarlett, as well as the standard Xbox One in addition to PC.Halo boss Frank O'Connor spoke about this distributed release in an interview with YouTuber Blackmist523. O'Connor said the Halo development team worked alongside the hardware developers behind Scarlett to allow for the game to look and perform "amazingly" on the next-generation system. That being said, O'Connor said people playing on the standard Xbox One (and presumably the Xbox One X) will still have a good experience. "The Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen. We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One," O'Connor said.Halo Infinite is also launching for PC, on the same day it comes to consoles. That's a big change for the series, as Microsoft never released the mainline instalments after Halo 2 on PC (though they are coming to PC now through The Master Chief Collection). The PC version of Halo Infinite might end up being the best version of Halo Infinite--provided your rig is beefy enough, O'Connor said. Here are his full thoughts on the matter:"Obviously the special citizen [for Halo Infinite] will be Scarlett, and we've worked with that hardware team to make sure the game shows up amazingly on it, and work with them to make sure that we know how to make sure the game look amazing on it, but it will be for Xbox One and it will look incredible. And it will also be for PC for the first time, day and date so that's exciting for us too."That's changed the way we develop and the way we think about things, but we are always shooting for the best possible hardware target. This time it's going to be up to you to decide--is it going to be Scarlett or PC; it kind of depends on your PC at that point. But the Xbox One is not going to be a second-class citizen. We're building it so it plays and looks fantastic on Xbox One, and then everything else is plus-plus-plus, but we've got a few tricks up our sleeves that we're thinking about. "Given the increased horsepower of Project Scarlett, and O'Connor's statement that developer 343 Industries is developing toward the "best possible hardware target," it remains to be seen if the standard Xbox One version will be limited in any capacities. Presumably the better hardware with Project Scarlett will allow the game on that platform to look and run better, but any other differences between the versions are unknown for now. Also in the interview, O'Connor spoke briefly and at a high level about Halo Infinite's story and how it is connected to the events of Halo 5: Guardians but also aims to be approachable to newcomers. O'Connor also talked about how while the E3 2019 Halo Infinite trailer did not show any new gameplay, it did introduce players to some of what to expect about how the game will look and feel at the start. While Halo Infinite isn't scheduled to release until Holiday 2020, a beta for the game will be held prior to release. "Missing for decades, he has finally returned to New York, now as a seasoned master of martial arts--and he's out for revenge."As for the mysterious upcoming DLC characters, one of them could be Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. A brief teaser shown to those in attendance (see below) contained what might be a reference to the classic game character. The codec screen appeared, and it contained a line attributed to Snake: "That was some good ass Tekken."Commentators on the livestream referenced this tease and strongly suggested that they knew what it was about but wouldn't share more details. Bandai Namco has officially confirmed that the next DLC character for Dragon Ball FighterZ is Janemba, as the leak suggested. The character was shown at the conclusion of the Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals at the Evo 2019 fighting game tournament. As with every other character in the game, Janemba looks true to the source material, with lots of details pulled from the anime to ensure that he looks and feels authentic. He uses his ability to manipulate matter and control over dimensions to create tricky setups that will no doubt be a pain to block. Additional his razor-sharp red sword is another deadly additional tool in his arsenal. Janemba is expected to be available on August 8.Surprisingly, a brief look at Gogeta SSGSS followed the Janemba showcase. Gogeta SSGSS will be the fifth DLC character in Fighterz Pass 2. Producer Tomoko Hiroki said there would be more information about him in the future. The sixth character in Fighterz Pass 2 is the Dragon Ball Super version of Broly.Dragon Ball FighterZ's FighterZ Pass 2 retails for $25 USD / $36 AUD / £20 GBP. Jiren, Videl, and GT Goku are already available as part of the pass, or can be purchased individually for $5 USD / $7 AUD / £4 GBP.The Dragon Ball FighterZ Grand Finals at Evo concluded with Japanese player Goichi defeating last year's champion SonicFox. The pair first met in the Winner's Finals, where Goichi defeated SonicFox to send him into the loser's bracket. SonicFox fought his way back to rematch Goichi in Grand Finals. However, unlike last year--when the two also met--this time SonicFox was defeated.Goichi burst into tears the moment his winning blow landed, and SonicFox jumped to congratulate his opponent. Despite being fierce rivals, the two showed each other a great deal of respect throughout the tournament, often casually laughing together after tense battles and recognizing each other's skill. In the final moment, SonicFox was the one to raise Goichi's arms into the air and invite the massive crowd to recognize the new best Dragon Ball FighterZ in the world.Info from Gamespot.com

An adaptation of Blake Harris' 2014 book Console Wars--which tells the story of the battle between Nintendo and Sega in the '90s--is headed to CBS All-Access where it'll get a feature documentary and a TV series.According to Deadline, the documentary is being directed by Harris and Jonah Tulis. Oscar-winner Doug Blush is producing. As announced previously, comedians Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are executively producing the documentary. As for the TV show, which will be a limited series, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts--who is also directing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie--is attached to direct. Mike Rosolio (American Vandal) is writing it.The Console Wars book, "Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation," centers on the story of former Sega executive Tom Kalinske, who led the company's American division in the '90s during its heyday, and helped launched the Sega Genesis that further accelerated Sega's place in the gaming world. As its full title suggests, the book, which is based on numerous interviews, also goes into Sega's battle against Nintendo for dominance in the gaming industry. The companies were indeed rivals, with Sega putting out a commercial that proclaimed, "Genesis does what Nintendon't."
