Shortly after Marvel revealed its Phase 4 slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe films and TV shows at San Diego Comic-Con, a major shakeup is being reported that could very well change the future of the MCU. It would also impact the Spider-Man franchise of films Marvel Studios co-produces with Sony.According to Deadline, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will no longer serve as a producer on Sony's Spider-Man films. The news comes after a new agreement between Sony and Disney was reportedly unable to be reached. As Deadline claims, a dispute between the two companies has been going on for months. What this means for the future of Spider-Man and the MCU is unclear. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the official end of the MCU's Phase 3, setting the stage for what's to come from the universe of films. With Feige no longer being involved, it's possible that the Spider-Man franchise could instead exist outside of the MCU. Sony has already been building a non-MCU Spider-Man universe thanks to the film adaptation of Venom, as well as the upcoming Morbius movie, in which Jared Leto stars as the titular living vampire. As sources tell Deadline, there were already two more planned Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland as the web-slinger, with director Jon Watts expected to return. The MCU, meanwhile, is already without characters like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans), following the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, Marvel Studios has a loaded slate of films that will introduce new characters--like the Eternals, Shang-Chi, and Blade--as well as new installments of the Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor franchises.Speaking to io9, a Sony representative clarified the situation a bit, noting they believed the issue at hand was over Feige receiving a producer credit on the films. According to the representative, negotiations between the two sides still in progress. It's also noted that Feige has contributed creatively to other films based on Spider-Man IP without receiving a producer credit from Sony. What the source didn't make mention of is any implications this would have on Spider-Man's future in the MCU.The situation could always change and the two studios could come to an agreement. Deadline, however, noted it would take something "dramatic" for that to happen. For now, an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on August 29.Updated to include Sony's comment to io9.Info from Gamespot.com

Continuing its years of significant growth, Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games has revealed the next major update coming to the free-to-play action-RPG. In the upcoming Blight expansion, players will take on a questline that introduces a new tower defense mode, yielding even more loot to outfit your characters with. This new update follows a set of other new expansions in the past year that have overhauled a significant part of the game, introducing new events and storylines for players to take part in.Just before its reveal, we got an early look at the new content, which releases on September 6 for PC, and on PS4 and Xbox One September 9. The Blight update introduces a new storyline involving an NPC named Sister Cassia who tasks players to repel the encroaching corruption that's taken root across the world. To fight off these waves of monsters, you'll need to construct complex machines to help stem the tide. According to the developers, the intent of these Blight encounters is to offer players a chance to take on bite-sized events that can open up access to better loot. The reward for clearing these fights are items called Oils, which can buff existing gear and produce new items for your character. As is tradition, the new expansion will also introduce a new suite of quality-of-life changes. These include revamps to the Atlas of Worlds questing system, new class and skill tweaks, and several fixes focusing on league play. Following the reception from previous expansions, the developers wanted to focus more on letting players experience the game at their own pace, and take on events in the order they want. Here's a quick rundown of all the key features in the Blight update:Blight League: The new expansion will introduce a new NPC named Sister Cassia, who allows players to access the new Blight Encounters. These events will focus on tower defense style gameplay against new monsters. Players can also acquire special Blighted maps, which open up access to new higher-end areas with greater rewards.Revised Atlas: The Atlas of Worlds update will receive some upgrades once again. In the Blight expansion, players can now interact with Masters in the player hideout. Furthermore, new Master missions are available for players to dive into.Gear Enchants: A new item set to appear in Path of Exile are the Oils, which can imbue existing gears with specific properties. Combining oils can even produce new equipment, such as rings and amulets.Class Changes: Certain player-made archetypes are seeing something of a revamp. For instance, the Necromancer archetype will now allow for greater control of your minions. Furthermore, the Shadow class' Saboteur archetype will have its mine skill altered to allow for greater control.Following several expansions, and the PS4 launch, 2019 has been an excellent year for Path of Exile. The Blight update looks to be another fun event to take part, which continues to surprise with what the action-RPG can offer. The developers stated that they plan to reveal more of what's to come with the free-to-play game at the upcoming ExileCon event in November.Info from Gamespot.com

Ubisoft's historical fighting game For Honor is once again free on PC, but this time you'll only need Uplay to claim it. The offer is only available until August 28, so act fast if you still haven't picked it up. Get For Honor (PC) for free hereFirst, you do need a Uplay account. After you've signed up, all you need to do is go to the Ubisoft Store website and click the "Get It For Free" button. It'll ask you to either launch or download Uplay, and once the launcher is open, For Honor will be redeemed to your account. Then it's just time to install it, and you're off to the races. For Honor is currently in Year 3 and has seen the release of the Black Prior and Hitokiri classes. Two more are set to release by the end of the year. Ubisoft supports For Honor with regular events, new items, and more. The Marching Fire expansion released last year. It added the Chinese Wu Lin faction, the fourth after the game launched with Knights, Samurai, and Vikings. The Wu Lin faction consists of four classes: the Dao blade-wielding Tiandi, Guando heavy Jiang Jun, hook sword-equipped Nuxia, and staff-swinging Shaolin.Prior to the Wu Lin, Ubisoft spent its first year after release adding several new classes to the Knights, Samurai, and Vikings. These included the Shinobi, Centurion, Gladiator, and more.In our For Honor review, GameSpot's Matt Espineli said, "[For Honor's] fundamental tenets of discipline and restraint are bestowed upon you permanently, forever changing the way you perceive a melee-combat encounter in a game. In its highest moments, For Honor is difficult to put down." He added that those who take the time to dive deep into For Honor's combat "will be rewarded with some of the most satisfying multiplayer melee fighting conceived in recent years."Info from Gamespot.com

GameStop has announced that over a hundred employees have been laid off. These job cuts hit multiple divisions throughout the company, ranging from corporate headquarters to Game Informer magazine."As part of the previously announced GameStop Reboot initiative to transform our business for the future and improve our financial performance, we can confirm a workforce reduction was implemented impacting more than 120 corporate staff positions, representing approximately 14% of our total associate base at our company headquarters as well as at some other offices," GameStop wrote in a statement to GameSpot. The Reboot initiative was implemented after GameStop failed to sell itself in 2018, though the company has continued to struggle in the growing digital gaming market. The company has put a greater emphasis on used games and pop culture collectibles sales, but both seem to only be slowing GameStop's descent, not stopping it."While these changes are difficult, they were necessary to reduce costs and better align the organization with our efforts to optimize the business to meet our future objectives and success factors," the statement concluded. "We recognize that this is a difficult day for our company and particularly for those associates impacted. We appreciate their dedication and service to GameStop and are committed to supporting them during this time of transition."Unfortunately for several members of the Game Informer staff, the layoffs impacted them as well. Of the 19 full-time members on the editorial team, seven have announced on Twitter that they have been laid off--managing editor Matt Bertz, senior editor Imran Khan, senior associate editor Kyle Hilliard, senior associate editor Jeff Marchiafava, associate editor Suriel Vazquez, associate editor Elise Favis, and associate editor Javy Gwaltney. If you're looking for talented writers and editors to join your staff, consider reaching out. All seven deserve to continue doing what they did for Game Informer."I am trying to get things right with my people," Game Informer editor-in-chief Andy McNamara tweeted. "I love Game Informer, its people and its readers more than any corporation could, and I will address all the issues when I can, but for now I need to focus on my GI family."Info from Gamespot.com

A new DOOM Eternal trailer was revealed during the livestream and hell has never look more inviting.Though short, the trailer showcases Doom Eternal's breadth as the player character traverses open expanses, tight corridors, and battle arenas. Hell seems even more populated than the last time around in 2016's Doom. The official Doom account tweeted a video of the Doom Hunter, one of the game's newer enemies. The Doom Hunters are sentry-looking, centaur-like creations solely intent on the slayer's destruction. They are huge, towering machines with a kind of chainsaw for an arm and homing missiles for added aggression. The DOOM Hunter, one of DOOM Eternal’s new enemies and most formidable foes. pic.twitter.com/pr4uD5bqWU — DOOM (@DOOM) August 19, 2019Doom Eternal launches on November 22 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. During Gamescom 2019, Hideo Kojima took the stage at the Opening Night Live broadcast to reveal more information about Death Stranding. During the show, an "exclusive new look" of the upcoming PS4 game premiered as well. The Death Stranding footage began with the introduction of "Mama," who's played by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress Margaret Qualley. We see her cradling an invisible baby, who she refers to as her daughter. A cinematic clip of "Deadman" debuted next. Portrayed by Guillermo del Toro, Deadman explains to Death Stranding main character Sam why his BB is dying. It wasn't all character trailers though, as the first gameplay trailer for Death Stranding debuted as well. In the trailer, we see Sam sitting in the midst of the hilly countryside. He then stands up, urinates, and heads out to make a delivery. His destination rests at upon one of the nearby cliffs, so he uses an extendable ladder to quickly ascend to the top. After completing his delivery, Sam accidentally falls down the cliff, using his BB to cushion his fall. This, obviously, upsets the BB though, so Sam spends a few seconds comforting the crying infant before continuing on his way...and accidentally falling the rest of the way down the cliff. Even as Death Stranding's release date draws closer, the overarching plotline of the game remains fairly unknown. Even Kojima's explanation for his latest game makes little sense, and the developer is coy about giving away any specifics. "You're alone playing as Sam; you're trying to connect city to city," Kojima said at an SDCC 2019 panel. "I can't speak much but everyone will be playing around the world and we'll have indirect connections. I'm an otaku and I felt like my teachers and family didn't understand me. I came to SDCC 10 years ago and met a lot of people like me, so I think that's what you'll get from this game."Death Stranding features a star-studded cast of Hollywood and game industry actors. Beyond the two characters noted above, Sam is both voiced and mo-capped by Norman Reedus, while James Bond actress Lea Seydoux is Fragile, The Last of Us actor Troy Baker portrays Higgs, and The Bionic Woman actress Lindsay Wagner plays Amelie.Scheduled for a November 8 launch date on PS4, Death Stranding may come to PS5 as well, but that hasn't been confirmed. Pre-orders are now live--including a $200 collector's edition.Info from Gamespot.com

Though the third season of Westworld is still a long time out, HBO and VR developer Survios have something to help ease that long gap before the next major arc begins. Revealed at Gamescom 2019, Westworld Awakenings is a new VR experience set within the world of HBO series. Focusing on an original story that occurs parallel with some of the significant events from Seasons 1 and 2, offers some subtle clues about the history of Delos and the fates of some characters from the TV series. Before the reveal, we had some hands-on time with the game running on the HTC Vive and spoke with some developers about how they went about adapting Westworld for VR.Westworld Awakenings takes place during the events of Season 2, following the violent clash between hosts and the members of Delos. You take control of Kate Weston, a Host--biomechanical android and NPC in Westworld--who's the central character of a storyline involving a grizzly murder in an isolated farmhouse. Initially, you'll explore the seemingly abandoned home, picking up clues and learning more of what happened in the house. Eventually, the layers of Kate's reality are peeled back, revealing the real purpose of her existence. What's interesting about a Westworld game is that the TV series already has some basis within the formula of a videogame. Set in the titular theme park, it often casts light on the creative process and struggles of trying to keep things interesting for visitors. Many elements of the show also focus a lot on quest-design and player agency, common design concepts in videogames. Speaking with Survios developer and Westworld Awakenings project lead Daniel Zeligman, he talked about their collaboration HBO and how they fleshed out the ideas from the show for the game."Tackling an IP like this that is so character and narrative-focused was very challenging," he said. "There was a lot of iteration across the board. Many of the discussions with HBO and my team were about to figure out what type of game this is, and what it's like to be in Westworld. This was not only from a mechanical level but also from a narrative level. Westworld is always about asking questions about identity and agency--particularly the idea of an internal presence and also philosophical concepts as well. Then we introduced more of the videogame design as well, in how we bring everything together for the game. It was a marriage of both worlds."What I found interesting about Awakenings is that it has more in common with adventure games like Gone Home, while also showing some sides of horror from Amnesia. Instead of focusing on the gunfights and carnage that you'd often see in Westworld, the game leans more on the drama and thriller elements of the series. With VR, this can present some moments that felt very unnerving, tasking you to explore areas that put me on edge. Kate will eventually find herself within the halls of the Delos laboratory, immediately following the Host uprising. With the help of a guide, a former Delos scientist who designed the Hosts and Kate's storyline, Kate will be able to use Delos devices to reprogram other Hosts and manipulate other aspects of the environment. Not only will this assist with solving puzzles, but it will also help her avoid the roaming slasher Host from her storyline who's gone rogue.Set for release on August 20 for HTC Vive and Oculus, Westworld Awakening could be an interesting dive for diehard fans of the series. While Westworld often has a reputation for being a bit challenging to dive into, Awakenings' opening does well to ease players into the story, which will undoubtedly get more subversive as it progresses. According to the developers, Awakenings will have plenty of easter-eggs and mentions for fans to focus on. Given that season 3 is set for sometime in 2020, this VR trip into an unseen side of Delos could be a fun trip to tide fans over. It may even offer some clues into what to expect from season 3.For more on Westworld Awakenings and all other games at Gamescom 2019, including Death Stranding and Gears 5, be sure to check back with GameSpot for updates as they come in.Info from Gamespot.com
