Season 8 of Game of Thrones, the show's final season, was its most-watched ever and the fantasy drama took home the Outstanding Drama Series award at the Emmys and set other records. At the same time, the reaction to the final season was mixed to say the least. Actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO show, has now responded to the controversy surrounding Season 8--as has Jon Snow actor Kit Harington, who has not yet watched the show's final season himself. At the Emmys, Clarke told Variety that the mixed response to Season 8 was "flattering." People passionately sharing their thoughts and opinions about Game of Thrones--whatever they might be--shows that people care, and that's a good thing, Clarke says."It was profoundly flattering," she said of the response to Season 8. "Because when someone cares that much, that they're ready to make such a noise about how they believe how the characters should have been finished, and how the story should have gone, that's just enormously flattering. That just shows how much everybody loved it."SPOILERS FOR GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 FOLLOW:In the final season of Game of Thrones, Daenerys becomes the Mad Queen, attacking King's Landing and killing thousands of innocent people. Jon Snow then kills her. When Clarke initially read the script and learned the fate of Daenerys, she was taken aback. "What, what, what, WHAT!?†she told Entertainment Weekly about her thoughts upon learning the story. “Because it comes out of f**king nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming."Kit Harington, meanwhile, said at the Emmys that he hasn't seen any of Season 8. However, he said he's proud of the show's final season, which was incredibly ambitious. He also spoke about how he believed in the final season's story arc and what happened to the characters."I know what it took to shoot it, and it was hard; everyone put all of their love and effort into it," he said. "Controversy, I think for us, we knew what we were doing was right story-wise. And we knew it was right for the characters because we lived with them for 10 years. Controversy didn't really affect us.""I still haven't seen the show." Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds are making a new version of the classic Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. Ferrell and Reynolds will star in the movie, which is to be a "musical reimagining" of the iconic story, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Daddy's Home veterans Sean Anders and John Morris are writing and directing the untitled movie. There is no word yet on the characters Ferrell and Reynolds will play, but presumably one of them will play Ebenezer Scrooge. THR states that the film is being pitched around Hollywood right now. "Multiple studios" are said to be in the bidding process, but none were named in the report. The classic story sees the miserly Scrooge visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to help Scrooge finally see the light and change his ways. Given Ferrell and Reynolds are known for subverting norms, you can bet the new movie will deviate in some silly ways. This will be just the latest adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Bill Murray starred in 1988's Scrooged, which offered a silly take on the story; Jim Carrey voiced Scrooge in the 2009 animated film A Christmas Carol from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis. Kelsey Grammer, meanwhile, starred as Scrooge in the Hallmark TV movie A Christmas Carol in 2004.It sounds like it's still relatively early days for the new Christmas Carol movie with Ferrell and Reynolds, so there are no hard details on the script yet or other cast. Nintendo's Switch exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has debuted at the top of the UK's physical sales chart, according to sales monitor Chart-Track. The game's impressive launch week means last week's No.1, Borderlands 3, slips to No.2 for the week ending September 21.It's a busy week for new releases, but save for Link's Awakening, none manage to break into the top 10. Truck Driver is the most successful in No.11, while the new Switch version of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch launches at No.23. Finally, the remastered PS4 edition of the same game is just behind at No.26.But it's the new Zelda game that is this week's big winner, and it was a hit with critics, too. The Link's Awakening reviews were universally positive and included an 8/10 from GameSpot in our own verdict."Though the remake has a couple of blemishes, it's still an easy game to recommend," wrote our reviewer, Peter Brown. "People speak of Link's Awakening as the secret best Zelda game. That's a tough call to make, but it's definitely one of the best. If you haven't touched a classic Zelda game in a while, Link's Awakening will almost instantly transport you back to the '90s. It's simple, in many ways, but the orchestrated journey still conveys a sense of adventure, and this new version is without question the best way to experience it. And more than anything else, it will put a smile on your face. Remakes are a dime a dozen nowadays and often easy to overlook. Don't make that mistake with Link's Awakening." Sony has committed to making the next PlayStation more green. In a note on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan committed to the UN's Playing for the Planet alliance. The UN Environment Committee initiative intends to partner with the video game industry to help make it more sustainable.Ryan promised that the "next generation PlayStation console" will be able to suspend gameplay with a lower power consumption. One million PS5 users enabling the feature would save enough electricity to power about 1,000 homes. He said the company will also be conducting a carbon footprint assessment for its gaming services and looking into energy efficient measures at data centers.Sony will also be working on a variety of messaging initiatives, starting with making sure to inform consumers on energy-saving features in their consoles. It will be providing reference info for developers who want to make games that revolve around sustainability. Finally, it's looking into PS VR applications that could help raise awareness about climate issues. The company also boasts that it has already been revising its production to become more energy efficient. Revisions to the PlayStation 4 have already saved an estimated 16 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Sony estimates that the total number will rise to 29 million metric tons over the next ten years, which for comparison is equivalent to the entire nation of Denmark in 2017."There is an undeniable opportunity for leaders in the games industry to take a stand and support the UN Environment team by communicating the importance of preserving natural resources for generations to come," Ryan said. "At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be more proud to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and the commitments announced. We look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together."Info from Gamespot.com

Borderlands 3 had the biggest launch in the publisher's history. 2K Games announced that within its first five days of launch it sold 50% more than Borderlands 2, making it the fastest selling 2K game. It also set a record as the highest-selling 2K game on PC within a five-day window, despite being an Epic Games Store exclusive. Plus the new sales pushed the franchise as a whole over $1 billion. It's only the second franchise for 2K to ever achieve that billion mark. But that's not all. 2K also said Borderlands 3--which has sold-in 5 million copies--got the highest percentage of digital sales at more than 70%, the highest pre-order sales to date for any 2K game, and broke Epic Games Store pre-order records. It was also a popular spectator game, claiming the top position on Twitch for the most-watched game on launch day.Gearbox recently detailed the first free content coming to Borderlands 3, the Halloween-themed Bloody Harvest. At the same time, game director Paul Sage said the company has no plans to add more playable characters, in part because the studio used active skills and mods to differentiate the classes more than in prior games. EA's FIFA 20 is just a few days from its global September 27 launch on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. As tree leaves begin to fall, so too do the reviews for FIFA 20. While our own review is still in-progress as we test out a few more features like Pro Clubs and Ultimate Team, several outlets have published reviews for EA's annual sports title. Check below for a roundup of what some critics thought of the game and its new Volta mode, and head over to GameSpot's sister site Metacritic for even more FIFA 20 reviews as they funnel in.FIFA 20 marks the 27th entry in EA's long-running football simulation franchise, which first launched in 1993 with FIFA International Soccer on a plethora of systems including the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. FIFA 20 sees the addition of Volta Football, a new mode that has a lot in common with FIFA Street. FIFA's popular Pro Clubs has seen some changes for this year's iteration as well, adding greater customization options and increasing the impact player weight and height. If you're eager to try out FIFA 20, a demo went live earlier this month for PS4 and Xbox One. The demo includes six playable teams--with Liverpool and Real Madrid among them--and the option to play matches between them in regular game modes or FIFA 20's new Volta Football.Game: FIFA 20Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: EA Romania, VancouverRelease date: September 27Price: $60 USD / £48 GBP / $87 AUDSee FIFA 20 on AmazonGameSpot -- 8/10, In-Progress"Flawed and iterative, but comforting, complete, and compelling, FIFA 20 is as frustrating and as essential as ever. The Journey and FIFA Street will continue to be missed, but Volta offers a genuinely different option for those who want to dip in and out across FIFA's smorgasbord of game types, while Ultimate Team continues its route to world domination. It's just a shame Career Mode continues to stagnate--even if EA has finally remembered it exists." -- Oscar Dayus [Full review]Eurogamer -- UnScored"FIFA 20 is all these things but it's also better than FIFA 19. I've already played loads of games against Eurogamer's second-best FIFA player, Chris Tapsell, and I've had a great laugh. I've scored some screamers. I've lost to added time goals. We've leapt off the sofa at shocking refereeing decisions, missed open goals by Marcus Rashford and magic from Mason Mount. We've picked apart the game, worked out what's changed, what's better and what's worse. We've had bloody good fun. And it's all undermined by corporate greed and a stubborn refusal to do what's right. A bit like real football, then." -- Wesley Yin-Poole [Full review]GamesRadar+ -- In-Progress"Even so, we've reached the stage of this generation where I don't believe EA can win over the FIFA community's more vocal contingent. Battle lines are too entrenched and the more the series promotes itself as an eSports contest, the more its audience wants the RNG element--Sergio Aguero missing an open goal, AFC Wimbledon overcoming Arsenal--done away with. Ultimate Team remains a supremely moreish fantasy offering: when on song, the best mode in the entire sports genre. But it still isn't one where the superior player always wins, and the likelihood of that changing anytime soon feels infinitesimal." -- Ben Wilson [Full review]IGN -- 7.8/10"Volta is a significant addition to FIFA and while it doesn't all hit the right notes, it's a largely enjoyable way to play a wealth of content, including a story mode that's more concise and engaging than The Journey. Elsewhere, improvements have been made to the core FIFA 20 experience, especially when it comes to defending, but overall controlling the ball feels less consistently fluid. For someone not attracted by the allure of Volta, the stilted pace, coupled with a neglect of offline modes such as Career, make it FIFA 20 an adequate but underwhelming entry into the series." -- Simon Cardy [Full review]USGamer -- 4/5"FIFA 20 revives the old Street series with a new mode featuring futsal and outdoor soccer, but it's the core gameplay that shines brightest this year, bringing down the pace in a way that feels nuanced and enjoyable. With additional updates to Career Mode and FIFA Ultimate Team, this year's version is easy to recommend to lapsed fans and newcomers alike." -- Kat Bailey [Full review]VG24/7 -- 4/5"Without much cosmetic polish to fall back on, FIFA 20 needed to bring something new to the table. Although the core gameplay isn't mind-blowingly different, it's still the best football game, and the addition of Volta is a whole new way to play." -- James Billcliffe [Full review]VideoGamesChronicle -- 4/5"With the addition of Volta to the already numerous modes on offer, FIFA 20 may finally be the FIFA game where it's impossible to play everything. Volta offers a fresh new way of playing the game, but the new reward-based Seasons in Ultimate Team means players invested in that will find it difficult to justify spending time playing Volta that could be spent in FUT earning more XP for their next reward. As long as you aren’t the type who needs to see and do everything, and are content with the idea of picking one or two modes and focusing most of your attention on those, FIFA 20 remains as high quality as ever." -- Chris Scullion [Full review] Info from Gamespot.com

It's been three years since Pokemon Go burst onto mobile devices, and while the days of seeing players stopping traffic to catch rare Pokemon may be over, the game continues to be a huge success. Last month in particular was a big one for the title; market research company SuperData reports it was Pokemon Go's best month since 2016.According to SuperData, Pokemon Go generated $176 million during August 2019. Not only did that mark "its highest point since peaking in 2016," it also made Go the top-earning game for the month on mobile devices, dislodging the usual No. 1 title, Honour of Kings.August is typically Pokemon Go's strongest month of the year in terms of revenue, and SuperData attributes last month's huge earnings in part to the numerous events Niantic held in the game. The developer has been gradually ramping up the cadence of in-game events occurring in Go; August alone saw the debut of both Shiny Rayquaza and Jirachi, the return of the Water Festival, a gift-giving event, and more. Sony is preparing another of its State of Play presentations, promising big PS4 news on the horizon. Whereas Microsoft's Inside Xbox streams come semi-regularly and Nintendo Directs are often themed around big games, Sony's State of Play is more sporadic and often more mysterious. We haven't had a State of Play since May, and it was a big one. We know some, but certainly not all, of what to expect when this new stream debuts on September 24. You can watch it all live right here.Sony State Of Play Livestream Start Time (Sept 24)1 PM PT4 PM ET9 PM BST6 AM AET (September 25)What We Know Will Be ThereSo far only one game has been confirmed for the State of Play: The Last of Us Part 2. Naughty Dog issued a teaser that directly stated it would be part of the presentation. That could mean anything from seeing the footage recently shown to retailers to a release date announcement or anything else. It's one of the biggest games on Sony's PS4 portfolio, so it's sure to be the headliner. What We Know Won't Be ThereDon't tune in expecting more details about the PS5, because we already know that the company is staying mum on hardware. The closest we've gotten to an update was a commitment to a more environmentally friendly console, as part of a UN Environment Committee initiative. We Have A HunchThough far from etched in stone, there's some reason to suspect we'll see a new Batman game announcement. WB Montreal, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins, has been dropping teasers over the last few days suggesting a Batman announcement is imminent. The timing is conspicuously close to the State of Play, along with an Inside Xbox stream that will follow just a couple of hours later. The new Batman game could be shown during either stream, or even both.To see it all go down, just bookmark this page and check the schedule for the start time in your region. It's just over a week before you'll be able to see for yourself whether Joker lives up to the hype. Joaquin Phoenix takes on the role of the iconic Batman villain, and thus far, the movie has been met with nearly unanimous critical praise--and a score of 70 at Metacritic. Now you can secure your seats for opening weekend to make sure you don't miss out on what will surely be an interesting moment for comic book movie fans.Tickets for the Joker movie, which releases October 4, are on sale now. Certain theaters will be offering screenings as early as the afternoon of October 3, for those that simply can't wait any longer to see exactly how this film plays out.In his Joker review, GameSpot's Michael Rougeau said of the film, "Joker succeeds, without equivocation, because it transforms the villain into the populist antihero we need him to be now. Joker wears its influences on its maroon sleeves, but it also carves its own gashes through the blood-soaked landscape of contemporary comic book movies, offering something that, despite teetering on the shoulders of 80 years of history, is wonderfully fresh, dangerously exciting, undeniably entertaining, and rock-solid in its artistry."As you prepare to finally see Joker on October 4, make sure to check out GameSpot's coverage of the movie, from talking about the leaked script with director Todd Phillips to our look at the real origin of the most infamous villain in comics history.Info from Gamespot.com
