It appears some new villains are set to invade Pokemon Go very soon. Following a series of teaser images released earlier this week, Niantic has revealed three new members of Team Rocket who are on their way to the hit Pokemon mobile game.Niantic shared pictures of the new Team Rocket members on the official Pokemon Go Twitter account, along with each of their names. While we didn't learn much about the new characters, it appears they're high-ranking members of the evil organization, as all three are also featured on a new loading screen alongside Team Rocket leader Giovanni.🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨Professor Willow recovered these photos from the corrupted folder hidden on his computer. “Cliff”#TeamGORocket pic.twitter.com/c3KhK7MLQQ — Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) October 2, 2019“Arlo” #TeamGORocket pic.twitter.com/gnXcvijZRc — Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) October 2, 2019“Sierra” We don’t know how these characters will affect the world of Pokémon GO. Following the news that Sony Interactive Entertainment's chairman for Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden, has left the company, Sony's Japanese branch is undergoing a shakeup of its own.According to a Gematsu report, Atsushi Morita has retired "due to age." Morita served as SIE Japan Asia's president and SIE's corporate director. Kazuhiko Takeda, who was named the company's deputy president and CFO in July 2018, will serve as the new corporate director. Morita worked as VP of administration and control, as well as several other roles, before taking the presidential and CEO position in 2014. Sony has yet to name a new president of its Japanese branch.Unlike Morita's immediate departure, Layden's timeline is still unknown. Though Layden plans to leave PlayStation soon, a specific date has yet to be confirmed. Sony wished Layden "success in his future endeavors" and thanked him for all his work in a Twitter post. While Sony's preparing for the next-generation of gaming with what has been unofficially dubbed the PlayStation 5, the company has confirmed the PS4 has been a huge success, shipping a current total 100 million consoles to date.Info from Gamespot.com

Sony has reportedly made a change to its platform policies, quietly taking PS4 cross-play out of beta. That means the console will support any game that wants to implement cross-play. We've already seen it come to PUBG and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks to be the first game that will have it at launch.Wired reports that the company made the move official alongside other pro-growth changes, including a price drop for PlayStation Now. GameSpot has contacted Sony for clarification.Sony had been long reluctant to embrace cross-play, despite increasing pressure from developers and competitors. That changed just over a year ago, when Sony relented and allowed it in limited capacity as a beta, keeping it to select games. This move represents an opening of the capability to any developer that wants to take advantage of it.Of course, it will still rely on studios to implement the feature. Blizzard recently commented that cross-play on Overwatch, for example, is harder than people realize. The price drop for PlayStation Now effectively halved the cost of the service, putting it roughly on par with Xbox's competing Game Pass subscription. It also added God of War (2018), Infamous: Second Son, Grand Theft Auto V, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End as part of the subscription library for a limited time. Sony also appears to be preparing itself for streaming competitors with Microsoft's xCloud and the launch of Google Stadia, as PlayStation Now offers a rotating library of streaming games that can be played on PS4 or PC.Info from Gamespot.com

One of the several gameplay additions coming to The Last Of Us Part II is a new upgrade system. We recently got our hands on the game at a preview event, and it seems upgrades are more than just a way to make Ellie stronger; they'll drastically change the way you play. GameSpot editor Phil Hornshaw spent time with the game and also spoke to co-director Anthony Newman about the feature. When Phil inquired about the upgrade system, Newman said, "There was so much we really wanted to explore in terms of player strategy. We really wanted to try and double-down on allowing players to express themselves strategically and find their own way to play the game. And so something I'm really thrilled about is the new player upgrade system where rather than having upgrades that are just minor stat booths to different things, we really wanted to have upgrades that potentially unlocked entirely new abilities or just had drastic effects on the way that you played a game."It seems that several gameplay mechanics will stack as you improve Ellie's capabilities, Newman gave an example saying, "One totally new ability you can get is holding your breath while aiming to steady your aim. It doesn't come by default but you can learn it over time." These can overlap with other systems, and Newman continued, "There are entire crafting recipes, like the silencer for the pistol, that you can only learn via the player upgrade system. Or some really extreme upgrades where you can craft two of an item for the same resources. You can craft two trap mines or two smoke bombs for the same resources." As Newman concluded, "You can find these synergies between playstyle, a set of weapon upgrades that you get at the workbench, a set of player upgrades that all create this confluence of a unique version of the game for yourself."Plenty of news has come out for The Last Of Us Part II and we have you covered from every angle. The ways in which you'll be able to change your play style may also feed into some of the new challenges you'll face, such as attack dogs that'll sniff you out and make stealth tougher. Clickers and raiders may be the enemies in Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II, but everyone has a heart. According to the game's co-director, TLOU2 has some new tech that makes heartbeats a vital part of engagement.Co-director Anthony Newman sat down with Polygon to explain how the tech works. "Just [about] every facet of the game [has been] updated [to] some new level," he said. "One of them is the audio where, I'm not sure if you noticed it, but as Ellie sprints around and then she settles, she'll kind of catch her breath." Doing any sort of activity, like sprinting or engaging in combat or even being near enemies, will cause Ellie's heart rate to shoot up. There isn't a stamina meter or a mandated heartbeat, but the elevated heart rates do alter how you approach many of the game's tense situations."What's happening behind the scenes is [Ellie] has a heart rate that is oscillating up and down,” Newman explained. "And that modulates the bucket of breathing sounds that she's able to use." Ellie isn't the only character in TLOU2 who has a heartbeat. Every character, from other humans to the infected Clickers, has a heart powered by this tech.Newman said he was able play a more sophisticated cat and mouse with Clickers because he could "kind of understand them by the noises they’re making." He also said the same goes for humans who will experience a similar sort of "breathing and sprinting and stuff." This likely means you will be able to sneak around with greater efficiency as enemies emit audible sounds that disclose their relative position. Since the inception of Destiny, Activision has had an exclusivity arrangement with Sony that saw content released on PlayStation platforms first. With Bungie striking out on its own, that deal has finally ended, meaning the last pieces of Destiny 2's PS4-exclusive content (released as part of the Forsaken expansion last year) are now available for the very first time on PC and Xbox One. If you're a player on either of those platforms, here's what you can look forward to finally getting your hands on.Exotic Weapon: WavesplitterPerhaps most notable of all is the formerly exclusive Exotic weapon Wavesplitter. This is a trace rifle, of which there are very few in Destiny 2. We noted in August that it was possible for PC and Xbox One players to finally acquire it through some cross-save trickery. Because it was included in Xur's Fated engram, you could in theory jump on a PS4 and effectively buy the gun directly. If you did that, it should now finally be usable on PC or Xbox One. If not, you'll be able to find it through Exotic engrams or as a very rare world drop. Alternatively, you can buy a Fated engram once Xur arrives this Friday for a shot at getting one. Titans get the Mimetic Savior set, Hunters get Red Moon Phantom, and Warlocks get Thorium Holt. There's no direct means of obtaining these, as you'll need to simply get lucky with Legendary engrams or faction rank-up reward packages. In the early going with Shadowkeep, I've already happened upon two of the armor pieces for Titans, though your miles will certainly vary. Whatever the case, you can expect these to drop as Armor 2.0 versions.Titan's Mimetic Savior SetWarlock's Thorium Holt SetHunter's Red Moon Phantom SetNew ShipAdditionally, there's a new ship called The Great Beyond, which you can get by completing Spider's wanted escapee bounties.New StrikeIn terms of playable content, there's also a new Strike called Broodhold that's set on the Tangled Shore and has you taking on the Hive. If you're eager to see what you've been missing, you can launch directly into the Strike from the Director; you'll see an icon for it to the left of the map when checking out the Tangled Shore.Beyond this old content that Xbox One and PC users finally have access to, there's also a new Exotic that Destiny 2 Shadowkeep and New Light players can look forward to getting. Eriana's Vow is part of the new battle pass reward track, and if you've bought Shadowkeep (thus granting you access to the Season of the Undying's premium rewards tier), you can acquire this Exotic gun and a set of armor right away. For free players, you'll need to advance further into the battle pass before snagging the weapon.Info from Gamespot.com

As usual, you can receive these tasks by spinning the Photo Disc at Poke Stops, and each one you complete will net you rewards such as items, XP, or encounters with certain Pokemon. You can complete as many Field Research tasks as you want each day, but the first one you clear will reward you with a stamp. After adding a new map in July, developer DICE is back again with one more addition for Battlefield V. The first-person shooter will receive another brand-new map later this week, and it should be familiar to Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 players.Operation Underground is the latest map coming to Battlefield V, dropping on October 3 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Battlefield V's official Twitter account shared a video of the new map, which will see you duking it out against other players in a tight, underground subway tunnel before emerging above ground in a war-torn German city. Operation Underground can be played in Conquest, Breakthrough, Squad Conquest, and Team Deathmatch. Further, Rush will be a supported game mode for a limited time.Let’s go underground...New multiplayer map, Operation Underground. Available October 3. pic.twitter.com/jYCeUBHF6v — Battlefield V (@Battlefield) October 1, 2019Battlefield 3 and 4 featured a map called Operation Métro, and Operation Underground is said to be a spiritual successor to it. Métro's original designer led the creation of Operation Underground and will allegedly keep Métro's intense close-quarters combat while removing bottlenecks and adding new gameplay mechanics. You can check out some screens of Operation Underground below.Battlefield V's competitive 5v5 mode has been cancelled. Senior producer Ryan McArthur provided insight on the decision, saying that "the added focus on improving the quality of the experience and adding more of the content you want" resulted in DICE chopping the mode. Battlefield V is currently on sale at the PlayStation Store, alongside a host of other titles like Bloodborne and Red Dead Redemption 2.Info from Gamespot.com

Season 3: Meltdown has officially begun in Apex Legends, bringing a bunch of new content to the battle royale game. One of the more noteworthy changes is the introduction of a brand-new map, World's Edge, which sees the Legends fight it out on a massive battlefield of ice and fire. Hidden within that map are mysteriously locked vaults, all of which hide high-level gear. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to open them--or at least, not just yet.First teased in the Apex Legends Season 3 gameplay trailer, the vaults are scattered throughout World's Edge. One is in an underground tunnel called The Mine Pass, which connects The Train Yard to the field just outside Fuel Depot. You can find another in the cavern that connects The Geyser to the settlement, located between Capitol City and Overlook. The third vault is also hidden in a tunnel--this one in the cliffs that separate Lava City and Sorting Factory. We've circled the locations in the map below. The problem, of course, is that all the vaults are locked. In the aforementioned trailer, it was implied that you'd need to destroy one of the flying loot ticks that populate spots on World's Edge for a random chance of getting a key that opens the vault. Perhaps we're just plain unlucky here at GameSpot, though, as we haven't found a key after smashing quite a few ticks. However, the keys themselves may just not be obtainable yet. If you go up to the door of any of the vaults, you'll see a timer that's counting down to Wednesday, October 9 at 10AM PT / 1PM ET / 6PM BST--a little over a week after Season 3 went live. There's no indication as to what the timer specifically entails, but we're assuming it's counting down to when players will be allowed to open the vaults. If that's the case, we most likely still have a few days before keys start dropping from ticks.Given the contents of each vault--a collection of purple- and gold-tier body armor, helmets, knockdown shields, backpacks, and weapon attachments--whichever team gains access to them first will have a tremendous advantage for the rest of the game. So perhaps Respawn is delaying access to the vaults to give players enough time to become acquainted with the new map and have a general understanding of the new Charge Rifle, hop-up attachments, and gameplay changes. Granted, Season 3 hasn't been live for very long. We could be missing something and there may be a way to speed up the timer and open the vaults right now. We'll keep looking. In the meantime, Season 3 introduces plenty of unlockables to work towards, with new recon character Crypto possessing 40 skins and the Meltdown battle pass introducing over 100 rewards--including a cool-looking legendary Pathfinder skin and smoking hot legendary Lifeline skin. Apex Legends is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.Info from Gamespot.com

Among the many new activities that Destiny 2: Shadowkeep brings are those tied to the Lectern of Enchantment. This device is located near Eris Morn on the moon and presents you with bounties and Nightmare Essence quests. These allow you to farm for superior versions of certain armor and weapons. One of the weapon quests, Essence of Failure, consists of several steps to earn the Arc Logic auto rifle, including one that requires you to find a special item. Here's where the Captive Cord is located and what to do.Each of these Essence weapon quests gives you a named location for where to find the item you need. In this case, it tells you the Captive Cord is found in the Lunar Battlegrounds, but you won't find that on the in-game map. The area you're looking for is the one from the very first mission of the Shadowkeep campaign. Once you're reasonably close to it, you'll receive an objective marker that guides you right to it. Here are step-by-step instructions to get there.Where To Find Captive ChordSpawn at the Sorrow's Harbor landing zoneGet on your Sparrow, head right toward the southeastern exit, which takes you across a bridgeKeep moving forward and you'll be notified you've entered the Lunar BattlegroundsPass through this next area by going straight and to the rightWhen you enter the next area, you'll see a wrecked dome structure and a building with a series of antennae and satellite dishesJump up to the third floor of the satellite building and you'll find the cord on the right sideFinding the Captive Cord is only one of three steps for this quest, though it is the only one with any ambiguity to it.Where to find Necromantic Strand in Hall of WisdomWhere to find Horned Wreath in Chamber of NightEssence of Failure Quest StepsActivities Completed (patrols, public events, Lost Sectors on the moon)50 Auto Rifle killsCaptive Cord foundFinish all three steps and you'll net yourself the Arc Logic auto rifle. If you don't like the rolls you get on it, you can reacquire the Essence of Failure quest from the Lectern. When replaying the quest, you'll only need to complete the first two steps--you won't need to find the Captive Cord again. However, the quest itself costs one Phantasmal Core, which in the early going are not easy to come across. They drop as rewards for some of Eris Morn's bounties, or you can buy them from the Lectern in exchange for 20 Phantasmal Fragments, which you'll earn by killing Nightmares. They can also be purchased for 25 Helium Fragments, the moon's planetary material. A new year, season, and expansion have arrived with Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, and it's a very exciting time to be playing Bungie's sci-fi loot-shooter-MMO. Shadowkeep brings with it a new story, an updated version of a classic destination, new gear to chase, tons of balance and economy changes, a completely revamped armor system, and much more. And, of course, there's a new raid launching soon--Garden of Salvation, which arrives Saturday, October 5. For some Destiny players, that's the most important thing. And getting raid ready by powering up as high as possible this week is all that matters.Jumping from 750, last season's maximum power level, all the way to above 900 in just a few days to get ready for the raid might seem daunting. But thanks to the way power level currently works in Destiny 2, it's actually incredibly easy to do. Things get a little bit more complicated once you pass 900, but it's nothing you can't manage with this handy guide. Here's how to get as many powerful drops as possible to ensure you're ready to tackle the Garden of Salvation on October 5. Destiny 2 Recent News Destiny 2 Necromantic Strand Location: Where To Go For Essence Of Brutality Quest Destiny 2 Horned Wreath Location: Where To Go For Essence Of Vanity Quest Destiny 2 Captive Cord Location: Where To Go For Essence Of Failure Quest Destiny 2 Shadowkeep: How To Power Above 900 And Get Raid Ready Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Battle Pass: New Exotics, Weapons, And Armor You Can Earn The Soft CapGaining over 150 power levels in a few days seems intense, given that each season used to raise the power cap by only 50 points. But what matters is actually the new "soft cap," which is set at 900 power. That means that any drops you get while playing Destiny 2, no matter their source, can potentially help to increase your power level all the way up to 900. That even includes the normally worthless blue items that come from completing public events, simply killing enemies, and dozens of other sources. There are exceptions to this--for example, if your overall power level is 800, but you have one slot with a high outlier number like 810, drops for that slot likely won't help you until the rest of your slots catch up. But for the most part, you can simply play the game normally, completing the new story elements and exploring the Moon, and hit 900 with relative ease. One important thing to note is that it's best to save any potential powerful drops until after you hit 900. For example, you should wait until you hit 900 to pick up Hawthorne's clan rewards, which are considered powerful drops. However, this doesn't apply to prime engrams, whose levels are set the moment you pick them up or they arrive in your postmaster. You want that world's first clear, don't you? Of course, if you want to speed this up and hit 900 more quickly, you have some options. For veteran players, the best course is to simply spend some time trading in materials for vendor gear. If you have a surplus of items like Crucible or Vanguard tokens, or even destination materials like Dusklight Shards and Microphasic Datalattice, you can trade them in with their respective vendors and receive random loot in return. Vanguard and Crucible tokens are probably your best bet, since you might have several thousand of them, and they serve no other purposes in the game (unlike destination materials). But even new players without a huge surplus of these materials can get to the soft cap of 900 without breaking a sweat, simply by farming public events on any destination, completing old story content (if you're a New Light player), or doing other world activities (like killing the Trove Guardian knight on the Moon and looting the chest his death opens a path to). How to Get Powerful Drops Above 900Now that you're 900 power, the easy part is over. Progressing above the soft cap is always a challenge in every new season of Destiny, but this time it's thankfully not too bad.First off: Make sure you're actually 900 power, without the extra levels from your season artifact being factored in. To ensure this, you can hover over your power level in the character menu and see your power from gear and your power from the artifact laid out separately.Throughout the power grind, you'll be able to see "powerful" gear sources on the map and destinations director, and even more will appear to you once you hit 900. These specially named engrams are guaranteed to award you armor or guns that are above your current maximum possible level. They even have tiers now--Tier 1, Tier 2, etc.--to indicate exactly how much of a boost they'll give you.Even so, there's bound to be some confusion around exactly where you can get powerful gear, because many old sources from the past year of Destiny 2 no longer count. For example, you can still play old raids to get legendary weapon and armor drops--and even new, Year 3 Armor 2.0 versions of old raid armor. But those drops will act the same as basic world drops, getting you up to the soft cap, but not helping to progress you beyond it.There's one major caveat to this: Thanks to changes in Shadowkeep, non-powerful drops can potentially still help you even after you pass the soft cap. That's because normal, everyday drops now arrive at levels much closer to your current power, even after you get above 900. For example, if all your gear in every slot is 915 except your helmet, which is lagging behind at 905, a blue helmet that drops in a patrol zone or from a public event would still be helpful, because it might arrive at 912 or 914. It's below your overall power level, but higher than your current helmet. Lastly, in previous seasons, players who wanted to get raid ready as quickly as possible often used complicated processes to juggle gear between three characters. Basically, you get as much powerful gear as possible on one character, then transfer your highest guns to a second character, which then starts the whole process with a boost in power compared with the first character. Then you do all powerfuls again, which should get the second character higher than the first, and repeat with your third character--the one you intend to raid with.Strictly speaking, this still works in Shadowkeep. However, it shouldn't be necessary for Garden of Salvation, since the "contest" modifier that will be active for 24 hours starting from the raid's launch time on Saturday will cap all players at a maximum level of 920 in the raid's final encounter. If you're going for a day one clear, getting above 920--which is extremely easy to do before Saturday--is completely pointless. So you might as well stop there.Every Source for Powerful GearSince many existing sources of powerful gear--including old raids, Menagerie, and Black Armory forges--have been deprecated, where exactly should you start looking for high-level drops once you pass 900 power? So far we've discovered the following sources:Clan engrams: If you're new to Destiny or simply haven't joined a clan yet, go find one. Simply being in an active clan ensures you multiple powerful rewards per week. (The unofficial Destiny 2 PC LFG discord server is a great place to start looking for a clan.)Challenges: Once you hit 900, you'll start to see icons over NPCs in various places, and on the destinations director itself. These icons give you objectives like "Complete 8 Vanguard bounties and speak to Zavala" or "Complete four Crucible matches," and they generally reward Tier 1 powerful gear. These are found all over the place, and will generally be your main source of powerfuls above 900. And there are several new challenges on the Moon, including the Nightmare Hunts and a heroic version of Shadowkeep's opening story mission.Prime engrams: Prime engrams are rewarded periodically as you play. Decrypt them in the Tower as soon as you receive them.Bungie rewards: Bungie will actually give you one free powerful engram, sent directly to the postmaster on the platform of your choosing, simply for signing up for emails. Check the Bungie rewards page to claim yours.Ritual weapons: In Season 8 (the current season), pinnacle weapons have been replaced by "ritual" weapons. You can pick up the quests to attain them from Zavala, Shaxx, and the Drifter in the Tower. Obtaining them is a grind, but might be worth it if you need more powerful rewards.New exotic quests: Shadowkeep introduces new Exotic weapon quests, some of which we likely haven't even discovered yet. For now, in these early days, you can start with the quest to obtain the Exotic rocket launcher Deathbringer, which will unlock through Eris Morn after you finish the campaign missions on the Moon.Glory rank-ups: Destiny 2's old competitive playlist has been replaced with a 3v3 survival mode that awards Glory points. Earning a new glory rank awards a powerful drop, so it's definitely worth jumping into the survival playlist as soon as possible. If we missed any powerful reward sources, let us know in the comments below, and we'll keep updating this guide as more info emerges. For now, have fun grinding, Guardians, and good luck in the Black Garden come October 5. Info from Gamespot.com

Every victory in Overland, no matter how small, is won by the skin of your teeth. That's a feeling any good turn-based tactical strategy game gives you, of course. But Overland's pared-down options, compact maps, and fast-rising stakes mean that nearly every decision--the car you drive, the company you keep, where you move, what you carry--feels vital and could potentially have major ramifications. A mysterious and omnipresent race of creatures (I think) has ravaged the USA, and for the characters under your care, road-tripping from the East Coast to the West Coast seems to be the best course of action. The journey across Middle America is a beautiful but difficult one, filled with life-or-death obstacles right from the get-go, and Overland's roguelike structure means you will see dozens, if not hundreds, of ordinary people (and dogs, all of them good) perish in fraught situations. But the high risk makes its small victories, like finding a cool item or escaping an area unharmed, feel all the more rewarding, more motivating. Overland is filled with bite-sized doses of relief that feed you with the encouragement you need to continue helping these poor folk on the off chance that maybe this time, you might make it all the way.The post-apocalyptic survivors of Overland don't possess the combat expertise of XCOM or Fire Emblem soldiers. The randomly-generated personality traits for characters are simple in nature, but make them feel more grounded and sympathetic than your typical strategy soldier, perhaps emboldening them as a good yeller, or informing you that someone “really misses their family.” Attacking and killing the unnerving and aggressive rock-like creatures that stalk you in each area you traverse is an option (if you happen to be carrying a makeshift weapon, at least), but clearing the playfield of hostiles isn't really the objective here. In fact, the noise that you make in attacking the creatures only attracts more, and in the game's densely packed maps, consisting of a 9x9 grid filled with buildings and solid obstacles, it will quickly create a scenario that is impossible to escape.Overland is instead a game that centers around your roadtrip vehicle. The vehicle you drive is your lifeline, and as you move from area to area on your trip west, your main priority is to keep that four-wheeled machine fueled and in good shape. You start with a simple hatchback but will eventually stumble across different models, and your type of vehicle will inform your strategy--vans let you transport more survivors than your standard car should you encounter them and pickup trucks provide plenty of storage for items but sacrifice seating. SUVs are a late-game godsend that marry the best of both worlds. Escaping an area on foot is possible, but as you'd expect, it's impossible to make any cross-country progress--your characters will be funneled into an area with a beat-up car to try and salvage in order to move forward.Keeping your engine running is the game's central challenge, and it's a demanding one. You need to scavenge new areas for fuel canisters, perhaps finding them in dumpsters or slowly siphoning gas from abandoned cars, and you might find some useful tools and items to assist you along the way. But where Overland creates its challenge, and in turn, its compelling high-risk decision making, is in the strict limitations it puts on what you're actually able to achieve. Restrictions characterise every aspect of the game: Your characters can only take two actions per turn and two hits before dying, and getting injured reduces your actions per turn to one; your vehicle can only take two hits before exploding, and its movement is limited to the two-lane road down the middle of the map, which will often be littered with junk; each character can only hold one item, meaning scavenging is an onerous task that potentially means giving up the ability for a character to defend themselves, and the compact maps mean you're always one square away from either narrowly slipping by or getting skewered by a creature. The lack of choice and options available to you in the overall moment-to-moment makes the ones that are there feel intimidatingly important--one misstep can cause serious havoc. There are items and character traits that can help push these boundaries. For example, your lone starter character will always be equipped with a backpack to carry an extra item, some traits will let survivors perform specific actions for free, and most (but not all) dogs have an inherent attack option. But it's rare for you to feel like you have a complete handle on the situation in Overland, and even then, it'll definitely be short-lived. The margin between success and failure is very fine, and constantly having to fly by the seat of your pants and improvise is a heart-pounding feeling--an undo function is available but has limits and conditions, and the game saves after the end of each turn. All of these factors help guarantee that every new run of Overland you play will be filled with memorable narratives born out of the natural flow of the game. One time, I was eking through a road blockage by having two characters clear debris as a third slowly snaked the car through a narrow passage, all while dozens of creatures bore down on us. A larger creature shoved debris between the clearing crew and the car, leaving me no choice but to escape on foot and leave the driver behind to a grizzly fate. In another situation, my crew of three stumbled across a brand-new, well-equipped pickup truck. But it could only seat two people, and after some consideration, I purposely drove away with my two favorites, abandoning the weakest member of the group. Later on in the run, that person would come back to try and get revenge. In one of my favorite scenarios, one of my human characters was cornered, unarmed, by a creature while scavenging. In a moment of desperation, I commanded her two other companions, both dogs, to race to the car, grab a wooden pallet from the trunk, and work to pass it to her relay-style so she could block the hit she was about to take. Overland is filled with these kinds of thrilling, dire scenarios where you need to improvise an immediate solution or resolve to just drop everything and get the hell out of there. There is a caveat to a game with so many difficult decisions, however: The risk of getting yourself stuck in a bad situation with no obvious way out and a feeling of merely perpetuating your eventual demise. You'll likely have many forlorn campaigns in Overland, especially when starting out, where the difficulty and hopelessness can feel overwhelming. Perhaps you're constantly driving on fumes and finding it's too difficult to obtain fuel from any of the areas presented to you, or perhaps your survivors are all injured and movement-restricted, making it feel impossible to achieve anything meaningful. Overland does present you opportunities to crawl back from these hopeless brinks--believe me, it's possible. But it can sometimes feel like the procedurally generated aspects of the game are stacked against you--especially when you have a crew equipped with debuffs like "Bad Driver" and "Clumsy,"’ guzzling up gas at an increased rate and making a racket with every action they take. But Overland's brutal, minimalist design is tough to stay away from. The bite-sized victories you narrowly eke out with each new area are incredibly moreish, and the game feels very well-suited to portable play on both Nintendo Switch and on iPhone through Apple Arcade. The game's clean, stylish art direction and somber, eerie soundtrack help to build the intriguing sense of mystery, too--whatever is happening in this post-apocalypse is likely much bigger than you or your survivors will ever have the chance to fully understand. All that matters is getting your survivors to the West Coast and making it through seven different biomes filled with an increasingly distressing variety of threats and hardships with whatever tools you can scrounge together. Overland perfectly captures a feeling of being helpless, of only just getting by, and of being afraid to venture too far away from your car into the pitch-black dark of night. Every movement you commit, every action you command, and every item or character you sacrifice for another will be an apprehensive decision. But taking each of those tough steps makes you even more grateful to hear the soft chime of your car's open-door alarm when you make it back, and the rev of the motor when you escape down the highway, relieved to leave another pack of abnormal creatures behind.
