Historically, the month of November has been a hotbed for some of the year's biggest games, and the upcoming batch in 2019 proves that's still the case. Before things wind down in December, November will see the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Hideo Kojima's return to gaming with Death Stranding. In addition to the big tent-pole games of November, Rockstar will also release the greatly anticipated PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Announced in October, Rockstar's open-world western will launch on the Rockstar Games Client first before shifting over to the Epic Games Store and then to Steam. Along with those games, the long-in-development Shenmue 3 will finally ship November 19 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. There's also still a suite of indie games and AA games coming to Switch, including the next Mario & Sonic mash-up and a re-release of Layton's Mystery Journey on the Switch.November is shaping up to be a notable month for games. So for your convenience, we've collected a few highlights for November and also included the full list of releases of games coming up.Red Dead Redemption 2 | PC | Release Date: November 5As GameSpot's Game of the Year for 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar Games impressed us with its scope of interactions to be found in the wilderness and within the towns of Saint-Denis and Valentine. It was an immensely satisfying prequel that introduced a suite of new characters and locations, while also giving us a greater appreciation for the returning cast as they got into all sorts of drama in their younger years. The PC release of the game will no doubt be a great time to jump back into the game, just for the fact that the game now runs at an increased frame-rate and higher resolutions.Red Dead Redemption 2 Comes To PC and Google Stadia Next MonthRed Dead Redemption 2 System Requirements RevealedRed Dead Redemption 2 On PC Adds All This New Story Mode ContentDeath Stranding | PS4 | Release Date: November 8Following the public departure of Hideo Kojima from Konami, fans have been anxious to learn more about the Metal Gear creator's next big game. In Death Stranding, players will control Sam 'Porter' Bridges--portrayed by Norman Reedus--as he survives in the remains of North America following a catastrophic event that wiped out segments of the population and irreparably altered the landscape. From what we've heard about Death Stranding following TGS and Gamescom, it looks to be an unusual approach to open-world games that puts greater focus on making connections with the few characters that remain in the land, and with other players online. We're excited to see how it all comes together, and it'll no doubt be in a way that only Hideo Kojima can pull off.Death Stranding Explained: Gameplay, Plot, Characters, Online, And MoreHideo Kojima Says It's His Destiny To Create New Games And Take RisksDeath Stranding Sequels Might Be Necessary, Kojima SaysPokemon Sword and Shield | Switch | Release Date: November 15The Pokemon series has been one of Nintendo's most steadfast franchises that's continued to grow in popularity every year. Set in the new Galar region--emulating the countryside of Britain--Sword and Shield, puts you in the role of a new Pokemon trainer who has to go out and catch all 'em all. However, what's new in Sword and Shield is that environments are more open, moving away from the very linear progression of the series' past. To take on this new approach to exploration, which can potentially lead to some unexpected fights with overpowered Pokemon, the trainers in the Galar region can trigger new evolutions for their set of Pokemon, turning tiny characters like Pikachu into giant versions of themselves.Pokemon Sword And Pokemon Shield - New Gigantamax Pikachu, Eevee, Meowth, And MorePicking A Pokemon Sword & Shield Starter Is Surprisingly EmotionalPokemon Sword & Shield Have "Drastically Overleveled" Pokemon In The Wild AreaStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order | PC, PS4, Xbox One | Release Date: November 11As EA's next big Star Wars game following 2017's Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order moves away from the online multiplayer battles and dives into a narrative-driven adventure akin to God of War and the Uncharted series. The dichotomy of beauty and violence has always been a driving theme in The Witcher series. The Northern Realms' gorgeous vistas are dotted with war-torn battlefields, kindness--no matter how fleeting it may be--is often juxtaposed with savagery, and even the warmest characters have a cold and calculated side to them. That neverending tug-of-war is ever-present in The Witcher 3, even when its stripped-down visuals may obscure some of that beauty.Everything is here in the Nintendo Switch version--The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, its two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and all of its DLC. The main game alone offers dozens of superb quests filled with interesting characters, fantastic twists, and rewarding combat encounters. As Kevin VanOrd said in GameSpot's original review, "Excellence abounds at every turn in this open-world role-playing game." The same is mostly true for the Nintendo Switch version. As you'd expect, the visuals have been pared down significantly. The textures are muddied, the draw-distances are reined in, and the resolution has taken a hit. These issues are exacerbated during docked play. While it technically runs at a higher frame rate and resolution docked, these visual issues are all the more noticeable when projected onto a larger screen. The standard Nintendo Switch's 6.2-inch screen does a great job of hiding the blemishes. Even though it's running at a lower resolution, the smaller screen gives it a much crisper look, so the poor textures and pop-in are less apparent. If you do plan on playing it in handheld mode, you can, thankfully, adjust the size of the HUD to make things easier to read.C'mon, this is what you're really here forFor returning players, the visual downgrade may require some getting used to. However, focusing solely on The Witcher 3's visuals does this port a disservice. Four years later, the game is still massive in scope, and seeing the battle-scarred swamps of Velen, jagged peaks of Skellige, and sprawling countryside of Toussaint on a technically inferior platform is still a sight to behold.More importantly, the grittier look of the Switch port doesn't affect The Witcher 3's core gameplay. The combat and exploration may be smoother on a PC, Xbox One X, or PS4 Pro, but I found performance to be consistent throughout a wide variety of combat encounters and locales. After nearly 30 hours, I haven't experienced any significant frame rate dips. Even the swamps in Velen--an area notorious for causing frame rate issues on PS4 and Xbox One--are comparable to the rest of the experience on Switch. According to developer CD Projekt Red, the frame rate should range between 24 and 30 frames per second. In populated areas like Novigrad, the frame rate dipped to the lower end of that range. Given the slower pace of The Witcher 3, I never found these dips to be an issue, even in the heat of combat. The Witcher 3's visual prowess may have been a selling point for some in 2015, but the Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty picture. Even today, there are few games that can rival the storytelling and worldbuilding on display here. Nothing is as simple as it seems, and every thread you pull on reveals enticing new details about this world and its characters. The Nintendo Switch version is a reminder that there is far more to this adventure than a pretty pictureThe vast web of decisions and consequences is just as impressive as it was in 2015. While it may not be apparent on your first playthrough, your actions--both big and small--can have serious repercussions, even if you were trying to do the right thing. What's more impressive is how well fleshed-out each of these paths are and how they ebb and flow through main quests and side quests. While many outcomes are bittersweet by design, none feel underdeveloped.Where The Witcher 3 continues to shine is in its many deeply human stories. While the political aspects of the main story give context to the world and the characters that inhabit it, it's the interactions Geralt has with its denizens that gives weight to the experience. There are no good guys or bad guys. There are just people fighting to find hope in an oppressive world. Many of the quests provoke questions like: Would you hurt others for those you love? Can even the most vile of men be forgiven? How far can fear drive someone? The superb storytelling continues in the game's two expansions. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. While not necessary to the main narrative, these two expansions are thoughtful addendums to Geralt's story. Blood and Wine in particular is a heartfelt send-off for the storied series. If you're jumping back into the game and just want to experience these, you can skip to them right when you load it up for the first time.Although the Nintendo Switch might not be the best platform to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it's still a fantastic experience that shouldn't be missed. If you are looking to replay The Witcher 3 and bask in its detail and beauty, the Switch port may not quite scratch that itch. However, what makes this game excellent isn't its graphics, but the powerful stories it tells, and those are as vivid as ever on Switch. Info from Gamespot.com

Pokemon Go's Halloween 2019 event is officially underway, and it's introduced a new Mythical Pokemon to the game: Darkrai. The nightmare-inducing Dark-type has started to appear in five-star Raid Battles, making this your first chance to catch it in Pokemon Go.Darkrai will only be available in Raids until November 1, when Pokemon Go's Halloween event ends, so you'll want to make the most of this time if you're hoping to add a few to your collection. To help you out, we've rounded up some tips on how to battle and catch Darkrai below. How To Encounter DarkraiLike many other Legendary and Mythical Pokemon, Darkrai can be found as a tier-five Raid Boss, so to encounter one in the game, you'll need to head to a Gym where a Darkrai Raid is taking place. The Mythical Pokemon will periodically appear at Gyms, but your best bet for finding one will be during the Legendary Raid Hour events. For one hour every Wednesday evening, more five-star Raids featuring Pokemon Go's current Legendary will take place, effectively guaranteeing you'll find a Raid. There will be two Darkrai Raid Hours before the Mythical Pokemon slinks back into the shadows. The first takes place on October 23, with the second following on October 30. Both events will run from 6-7 PM local time.To participate in a Raid Battle, you'll need to have a Raid Pass. You can either purchase these from Pokemon Go's in-game store or receive one for free when you spin the Photo Disc at a PokeStop; however, you can only hold one free Raid Pass at a time. Pokemon Go News Pokemon Go Halloween 2019 Event Coming Soon, Adds Costumed Starters, New Shiny Pokemon, And Darkrai Pokemon Go: Darkrai Now Available In Raids For A Limited Time Pokemon Go Bringing Back Regi Trio For A Limited Time Next Month Pokemon Go's November 2019 Community Day Announced, Features Chimchar Best Darkrai CountersBefore you can have a chance to catch Darkrai, you'll first need to defeat it in battle, and it'll prove to be a tough opponent. Darkrai is a pure Dark-type, which means it is susceptible to Fighting, Bug, and Fairy, so you'll want to have Pokemon of these types on your team when you challenge it.For Fighting-types, Machamp will likely be your best bet, particularly if it knows Counter and Dynamic Punch. Heracross and Scizor are both good Bug-types to use, the latter especially if it knows X-Scissor. Fairy-types are harder to find because they're among the rarest Pokemon in the game, but Gardevoir with Dazzling Gleam is a good choice. However, two types you'll want to avoid using are Ghost and Psychic. Darkrai resists both elements, so those monsters won't fare very well against it. Note that Gardevoir is also part Psychic, but it takes neutral damage from Darkrai thanks to the fact it is also part Fairy, and if it knows the aforementioned Dazzling Gleam, it can hit the Mythical Pokemon super-effectively. Follow these tips and you should have no problem taking Darkrai down.Info from Gamespot.com

For True Fiction Episode 5, we're taking a look at one of the most beloved horror/thriller movies of all time: The Shining. The Stanley Kubrick classic based on a Stephen King book follows one man's descent into madness, but there's more to the fall than initially meets the eye.Main character Jack Torrance's mental break is the result of numerous factors, one of which is isolation. In this episode, we delve deep into the impact of isolation on people and explore how well The Shining portrays the madness that can result from it.You can check out True Fiction on the GameSpot Universe YouTube channel, where new episodes will be released every Sunday. You'll also find a little more about the process of making the episode from host and writer Kurt Indovina.Kurt: The True Fiction team are all big fans of The Shining, and with that fandom brought a lot of pressure for this episode. Not only pressure for our own expectations, but to that of other fans of The Shining.Whether you’re a Stephen King fan who, like its creator, despises Kubrick’s interpretation, or a Kubrick fan who has meticulously shaped their own theories on the film, there was a tremendous amount to cover and address.Unlike previous episodes in this series (which drew from actual events), we set out to try something different with this one. Instead, we wanted to examine how accurately Kubrick’s The Shining portrayed with maddening psychology of isolation, and we wanted to do this by comparing it with real-life tests and evidence.Among the many challenges already before me, one that I didn’t anticipate was the research process. Up to this point in the show, I had learned about hundreds of people who died in their sleep, nuclear ash showering over innocent fishermen, and the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in WWI--each episode bringing its own wave of heavy and sad emotions on me. But I don’t know if anything could have prepared me for learning about Harry Harlow’s experiments on rhesus monkeys. As explored in the episode, Harlow is infamous for experiments like raising an infant monkey with a surrogate mother made of wire, to raising them from birth with zero human or nonhuman contact. The experiments proved deeply damaging to the test subjects. The experiments were nothing short of despicable. Still, it proved a testament to the point I was seeking to make with this episode.I used to daydream about the idea of living isolated for a month out in the woods, or maybe even on a boat. No one but myself; just enough to live, and the tools necessary to create as much as I wanted. But after researching this episode, I have completely backpedaled on the idea, and have grown a little more terrified at the idea of being utterly alone for too long. That said, it’s made me appreciate The Shining more than I already did, which I honestly didn’t think possible.Info from Gamespot.com

One of Hollywood's best-known and most esteemed directors, Francis Ford Coppola, has backed up Martin Scorsese's negative comments about Marvel movies, and he took things a step further. The five-time Oscar winning director behind movies like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now said Scorsese is right when he said superhero movies are "not cinema" and that movie theatres have become more like "amusement parks."Marvel movies don't offer enlightenment, knowledge, or inspiration, the 80-year-old director said to reporters after accepting the Lumiere Award in France recently."When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration," he said, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency and France 24."I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema," Coppola added. "He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is."Coppola's comments led to a swift response on social media from movie fans and movie-makers. Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld said Scorsese and Coppola are titans of the movie business, and they have "earned" a place to share their opinions about film. That being said, Liefeld correctly pointed out that Marvel, DC, and others will not stop making superhero movies just because Scorsese and Coppola don't like them.Scorsese and Coppola are on the cinematic Mt. Rushmore. They have more than earned their views on cinema and their opinions should not surprise or ignite. They won’t affect the creation of comic films or your enjoyment of them. — robliefeld (@robertliefeld) October 20, 2019Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, meanwhile, said in a post on Instagram that no one should be surprised by the comments made by Scorsese and Coppola. Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them 'despicable.' Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same. I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, 'I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!' Superheroes are simply today's gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay"Marvel's MCU is the most profitable film franchise in cinema history, grossing a gargantuan $18 billion over the past 10 years.Info from Gamespot.com

We already knew Jared Leto was reportedly not thrilled with DC's decision to make the new Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix, and now a new report alleges that Leto tried to stop the movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leto was so frustrated with Warner Bros. making the new movie with Phoenix and director Todd Phillips that he complained to his then agents at CAA and also asked another one of his manager's to try to reach out to reach out to top management at Warner Bros. to try to kill the new Joker movie.A source from Leto's team, however, told THR that Leto never did this. Leto and this agent, Irving Azoff--who represents Leto in his music endeavors--have since split up. Another thing to know as well is that CAA is the same talent management company that represents Phillips. Leto has since signed with CAA rival company WME.Reports have suggested that Leto felt he was promised his own standalone Joker movie, and he was upset when Warner Bros. decided to make the new movie with Phoenix. Sources said Leto believed his agents at CAA should have fought harder for his take on Joker and should have informed him earlier about the Joker movie with Phoenix and Phillips. He reportedly wanted more respect as a Oscar winner (Dallas Buyers Club). According to the site's sources, Warner Bros. did not think Joker would be a big hit, given its tone and R-rating, and only greenlit the project on a small budget (~$55 million) to try to push Phillips off the idea of making the movie in the first place. That is not how it all worked out, however, as the low-budget movie went on to become a massive success; it has earned critical acclaim and more than $730 million at the box office. The THR report goes on to say that WB management "wasn't thrilled" with how Leto handled himself in the process of making Suicide Squad, his first appearance as Joker. According to the report, he gave "gifts" to castmates like a live rat to Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and a dead pig for every actor during rehearsals. Leto only ended up with about 10 minutes of screen time in Suicide Squad."In his defense, it was never really his movie, but his attempt to 'invent' a place for himself in it backfired," a source told THR.According to Leto, the number of Joker scenes cut from Suicide Squad's theatrical version amounted to enough to fill an entire Joker movie."I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity," Leto said in an earlier interview. "Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there's probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie.Leto is still employed by Warner Bros., as he is filming The Little Things with Rami Malek and Denzel Washington at the studio currently. However, Leto is reportedly finished playing Joker, as he won't appear as the character in the Harley Quinn spinoff Birds of Prey or The Suicide Squad. Info from Gamespot.com

Fandango's Erik Davis said, "We are beyond excited to see how this momentous chapter in Star Wars storytelling nears its end."It's not exactly clear when, precisely, tickets will go on sale. For previous Star Wars movies, advance ticket sales drew a huge amount of interest and some ticketing sites went down. Given that The Rise of Skywalker is the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, it's expected there will be a huge amount of interest in advance ticket sales for the new movie. The new Rise of Skywalker trailer and advance ticket availability comes on October 21, which would have been Carrie Fisher's 63rd birthday. The Rise of Skywalker opens in theatres on December 20. Fans won't have to wait that long to see new Star Wars content, however, as the new Star Wars live-action TV show, The Mandalorian, premieres in November on Disney Plus.As for Star Wars video games, Titanfall and Apex Legends developer Respawn's new game, Jedi Fallen Order, launches on November 15. GameSpot recently went hands-on with the new game, and you can check out our impressions in the story below.Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Isn't Groundbreaking, But Could Still Be SatisfyingInfo from Gamespot.com

The latest box office numbers have arrived, and Disney's Maleficent sequel, Mistress of Evil, was a disappointment. Entertainment Weekly reports that the film made an estimated $36 million in the Friday-Sunday period in the US and Canada, which is below the $40 million it was predicted to make.Additionally, that's just over half of the $69.4 million that the first Maleficent movie made over its first weekend back in 2014.At $36 million, Mistress of Evil had the lowest opening weekend for for any Disney movie so far in 2019. The film pulled in a further $117 million from overseas markets over the weekend to push its total to $153 million. Still, the movie had a budget of $185 million (before marketing), so this shows "audiences weren't invested in a sequel," EW said.Mistress of Evil has a very good A rating on Cinema Score, which is a measurement of audience scores. The movie stars Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie. It was directed by Joachim Ronning, who previously made Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.Mistress of Evil did well enough to unseat Joker from the No. 1 position its held since it debuted on October 4. The Todd Phillips/Joaquin Phoenix movie made $29.2 million at the box office in the US/Canada this weekend. The movie has made more than $730 million globally so far, which makes it a huge success given it was made on a $55 million budget.Another new movie that premiered this weekend was Zombieland 2: Double Tap. It earned $26.7 million in the domestic market, which is ahead of the $24.7 million that the first movie made over its opening weekend in 2009 (not adjusted for inflation).October 18-20 US/Canada Box Office:Maleficent: Mistress of Evil -- $36 millionJoker -- $29.2 millionZombieland 2: Double Tap -- $26.7 millionThe Addams Family -- $16 millionGemini Man -- $8.5 millionAbominable -- $3.5 millionDownton Abbey --$3 millionJudy -- $2.06 millionHustlers -- $2.05 millionIt Chapter Two -- $1.5 millionInfo from Gamespot.com

There are more video games out there than ever, and with lots of new releases each month (especially toward the end of the year) it's hard to get your head around everything that's becoming available. A lot of gold out there that goes unnoticed, games we think deserve to get seen. In this article, we're recommending three standout games from September 2019 that might have slipped under your radar, but are still incredibly special, deserve attention, and can probably be finished in a weekend. If checking out cool, smaller games is your jam, be sure to check out our previous installment of this column, where we dive into wonderful games like A Short Hike, Eliza, and Anodyne 2. Our video team also went out of their way to make sure people don't skip out on River City Girls.Mutazione (PC, Switch, PS4, Apple Arcade)In Mutazione, the garden is a metaphor for human relationships. People, like plants, only grow to their full potential when they're in the right environment, receive appropriate nurturing, and exist in harmony with others. Such themes enrich this mellow point-and-click adventure that tells a sweet, earnest tale of a teenage girl growing up and learning about the importance of sustaining connections with family, friends, and important places. You play as Kai, recently arrived on the peculiar island of Mutazione, her family’s original home. The ostensible reason for her visit is to finally meet her elderly grandfather who is gravely ill, but Kai soon feels an attraction to the mysterious island that enhances her desire to discover more about her family history.Mutazione itself is a strange place, teeming with verdant plant life and home to a small community of regular humans and unusual mutants. There’s a giant green-skinned boy whose formidable appearance belies his good nature. There’s a part-human, part-feline creature who enjoys sunbaking on the rocks by her secret swimming hole. The local plumber employs a team of sentient sausages to assist him--presumably, their cylindrical shape is an advantage when navigating stubborn pipes. Every character you meet has a warmth and a story to tell.As the days pass, Kai wanders the island chatting with its cast of characters, forging friendships that allow her to dig deeper into the history of the place and the myriad connections--by turns loving, generous, and tragic--between the people who live there. To cement the metaphor, she also begins to tend to various gardens, collecting seeds as she wanders and learning nurturing techniques from those in the know. The process is shallow, but the meaning runs deep. As the gardens bloom into life, Kai is able to coax her new friends to open up to her and, in turn, they help her to reveal more of her own hopes and fears for her life ahead.Mutazione is a lovely experience, one that is grounded in a daily routine that quietly hums with a gentle kindness. There’s a delicate touch to its writing, and the contrast between light and dark means its more poignant moments carry greater emotional weight. One could imagine a version of this game that pushed the gardening mechanics in a more complex direction, but the strength of Mutazione--both the game and the island itself--is its story. Roots possess resilience, Kai learns, but they cannot be taken for granted. It’s Like: Stardew Valley ponders the nature of existence.Find Mutazione on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Apple Arcade. Wilmot’s Warehouse (Switch, PC)I recently reorganised my bookshelf after downsizing my collection and was faced with an unexpectedly difficult decision. How to sort the remaining volumes on the shelf? There’s the obvious strict alphabetical order by author’s last name, yet it’s not always an efficient use of space and rarely creates a display that is pleasing to the eye. Some people like to arrange books by genre or maybe size or even colour, knowing it is unlikely they’ll ever need to explain their singular, arcane system to another person. No method is perfect, of course, what matters is how it works for you.Wilmot’s Warehouse is built around making you think about how you sort things. Every few minutes, new items--represented by simple, coloured, abstract icons on tiles--arrive at your warehouse. You can pick them up and move them around wherever you like, but it’s vital you remember where everything is stored because you’re also asked every few minutes to fulfill orders of said items. With time ticking away, you now need to know exactly where to find those three boxes that sort of looked like pink lollipops. Did you file them away with the other pink items? Or did you create a food section for things that kinda sort of look like they might be edible? Or maybe they’re with all the things that have circles on them because that seemed like a good idea at the time? This is a game that is both more and less than what it first seems. Perhaps the most surprising aspect is there is no real attempt at a narrative layer, no specific details around who you are or why you’re working this warehouse job, no twist where the curtain is pulled back to reveal some deeper truth. This is no Papers, Please style study of how mundane bureaucracy hollows out humanity, though in its drip fed rewards there’s a light satire of vacuous management motivational methods. In this absence, however, Wilmot’s Warehouse becomes something more substantial than merely pushing boxes. As the deliveries pile up, and the combinations of abstract shapes, colours and possible symbolic meanings multiply, things can become rather stressful, as you find yourself having to retain so much information in memory, as it were, while also constantly updating that data set with new categorizations. At all times, though, there’s a satisfying sense of getting a job done intertwined with the tactile pleasure of shuffling things into their appropriate places.Amongst all this, perhaps as you’re shunting what might be a football or maybe an egg down aisle three, you’ll experience another quiet revelation about how you perceive the world. It’s Like: The Sokoban-style puzzle game adopts the Kon-Mari method.Find Wilmot's Warehouse on Steam and Nintendo Switch.Fit For A King (PC)The terrible reach and comical limits of absolute power are both on display in Fit For A King, a witty retro-styled adventure game in which you play the titular monarch and your people's perception of you matters. For example, you can approach any of your subjects and command them to pay their taxes on the spot, directly to you but the timid peasantry will shy away from telling you important information if you greet them in full royal garb. A sly change of clothes out of sight, however, and they’ll open up once they see you as an equal rather than a lord to be feared.Your efforts to fill the kingdom’s coffers and befriend the commonfolk are less in aid of the realm and more to serve self-interest. A rival king, you see, has announced a sudden visit and you must hasten to prepare a reception that honors the status of such an occasion while at the same time humbling a regal peer.In its aesthetics and interface, Fit For A King doesn’t so much nod towards the classic Ultima RPGs from the 1980s as fall to its knees in awestruck veneration. Beyond a visual style that closely apes Ultimas IV and V, chatting with NPCs is carried out via typing keywords into a text parser. Asking “name” and “job” gets the conversation started while following up with the right topics based on their responses is vital to securing their services for the royal visit or to prompt a new avenue of party-planning investigation.Light and breezy in tone, the dialogue is effortlessly charming. It’s often very funny, too, especially when the game is reacting to some of your more unusual kingly decrees. I reformed the church and then ruled that people can now marry game objects, for instance. By the end of my reign, I had managed to divorce one queen, marry another, marry a particularly tempting barrel from the wine cellar, and knight my faithful dog. I also sentenced the executioner to execute himself.Fit For A King is probably not entirely suitable for an actual king. More the court jester, if truth be told. It’s a constant delight, a pocket-sized kingdom whose walls, crypts and woods are crammed full of secrets, strange turns and unexpectedly hilarious interactions. I don’t think you need to have played an Ultima game to appreciate what it’s doing, but those who have will adore the countless references and subtle subversions. It’s Like: The most gentle, affectionate parody of ‘80s PC RPGs you could imagine.Find Fit For A King on Steam and Itch.io.Info from Gamespot.com
