Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not have an offline mode. Speaking during a panel held at BlizzCon 2019, lead designer Angela Del Priore addressed a question about whether the game can be played solo and whether it will support "a full offline mode.""We are not going to support an offline mode," Del Priore replied. "But as I said before, nothing in DIablo 4 is going to require partying up. You can play solo and dungeons are private. Campain quest areas will [also] remain private."This shouldn't be much of a surprise to Diablo players on PC, especially those that played Diablo 3, which has required an internet connection to function since its launch. This is also the case for the majority of Blizzard's other major franchises, such as World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and StarCraft. However, console versions of Diablo 3 do include the ability to play offline. Diablo 4 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One, as well as PC. In a statement to GameSpot, a Blizzard representative has confirmed that Diablo 4 will be online-only across all versions, including PS4 and Xbox One.At BlizzCon, we played some of Diablo 4 and felt that the "live" aspect of the game introduced something new to the franchise. The return to the series' darker, occult roots is also one of the most distinct aspects of the game. You can read our full Diablo 4 impressions for more. Blizzard's announcement of Diablo 4 during the opening ceremony of Blizzcon 2019 described an installment of the action-RPG series that sounds very different from its 2012 predecessor. Diablo 4 returns the franchise to its darker roots. While Diablo helped inspire the slate of loot-chasing games that have recently arisen, it looks like Blizzard is borrowing some ideas from those games to make Diablo 4 something more of a shared-world experience. After the announcement, Blizzard made a short demo available on the show floor, where we played about 10 minutes of Diablo 4. The most striking element is the game's use of ideas similar to what's seen in games such as Destiny 2 or Dark Souls. You're a warrior fighting off hordes of evil creatures throughout the world of Sanctuary, but you're not alone. Not only do you have your cooperative teammates, but in the demo we saw, the world was also alive with other players fighting just as hard to dispel undead fiends and demonic creatures. The demo included three different character classes: the Barbarian, the Sorceress, and the Druid. Taking on the role of the shape-shifting druid, we quickly delved into the horrific world of Sanctuary, dropping into the middle of a quest that sent us exploring a crypt in search of a particular lantern. The formula was immediately familiar--Diablo 4's combat takes on a fast pace, while offering you a number of abilities to bring to bear against your enemies--but Blizzard's darker approach to the game came through just as quickly, punctuated by a short cinematic in which your character climbs through a pit of bodies, up out of a subterranean cave, and through the dirt of a literal graveyard.Once out in the world, Diablo 4 presented what felt like a more awful, desperate Sanctuary, but one that was also more alive. Wandering toward the village of Corbach, I started running into other players as they thrashed through monsters and interacted with distraught and forlorn villagers. In a practical way, those extra bodies in the world help create a lot of, well, extra bodies. You're seemingly as likely to wander across live enemies in the world as dead ones that someone else has already eliminated, which provides a distinct feeling that while the humans of Sanctuary are on the brink of destruction, there are still plenty of warriors around fighting back. You're seemingly as likely to wander across live enemies in the world as dead ones that someone else has already eliminatedThose extra players mean there’s opportunity to make Diablo 4 feel more dangerous, as well. Though you might cross a field behind someone else who has mopped up all the mobs just before your arrival, you can also stumble across some hulking creature that you simply couldn't handle on your own. These encounters take on the feeling of public events in shared-world games, where multiple players band together spontaneously to destroy something that would be otherwise beyond their powers on their own. Stumbling across one of these massive demons in Diablo 4 can be frightening, but with other players around, they also engender a sense of shared purpose. As the Druid, your abilities mostly concern transforming into powerful creatures to deal massive damage, and knocking enemies around to stun them and control the battlefield. Your basic attack turns you into a werewolf to swipe away with your claws, and the rest of your moves tend to dish out big blasts of damage across certain areas. One lets you transform into a bear and charge through multiple enemies while repositioning yourself; another tosses a pair of boulders at enemies that leaves them stunned; yet another sends a pair of wolves after one enemy while you deal with another. Where the Barbarian is all about big damage and the Sorceress focuses on area-of-effect and stuns, the Druid seems to be a balance of the two.During the opening ceremony, Blizzard described its intention to lean into the horror of the Diablo franchise, and even in our short demo, there was evidence that this is the case. The cinematic trailer is certainly full of disturbing sights, and the cutscene of your escape from the cave helps telegraph Diablo 4's underlying dread very early. A mission I took on for the local village leader had a significant horror bent as well. It centered on the woman's son, a fitful youth who's been having prophetic visions of a lantern and insists he needs to find and retrieve it. The venture through the early cave culminates in discovering the lantern, but returning it didn't make the son better, but worse--now he wanted to take it and wander into a cave. When I went to the cave in his stead, I discovered why he was drawn there: the previous elder had been using the lantern and its dark magic power to sacrifice young people to a witch, ensuring the village's prosperity. But even destroying the witch wasn't enough to save the boy. Back at the village, I arrived just in time to watch him choke on blood while his mother watched in horror. It was a tragic and horrific moment, and it seems that's exactly what Blizzard intends in Diablo 4's aesthetic and thematic focus. Paired with its shared-world approach, it seems we can expect Diablo 4 to offer a pretty different take on the franchise from its predecessor. Since its debut in 2016, Overwatch has become one of Blizzard's most recognizable and prolific games. Focusing on PvP engagements with a cast of charismatic heroes and villains, Overwatch's team-based first-person shooter gameplay has become a fun and accessible favorite among Blizzard's litany of dense role-playing games and real-time strategy experiences. In the lead up to Blizzcon 2019, there were rumblings that a sequel to the live-service shooter was in the works, and it all turned out to be true, with game director Jeff Kaplan taking to the Blizzcon stage to reveal Overwatch 2. Moving forward in the series' timeline, the familiar crew of globe-trotting heroes will battle the forces of Null Sector in the sequel, while also preparing for their confrontation with the anti-heroes of Black Talon. What makes Overwatch 2 a proper sequel to the original is that it will expand the franchise's scope with a fleshed-out PvE experience and dedicated story missions. These co-op focused engagements pit you and a squad of other players against AI enemies. Shifting towards a more Destiny-style experience, you'll also be able to level up and customize aspects of your favorite heroes as they contend with the twists and turns of the evolving story. The biggest, and likely most welcome change that this new experience will bring, is that this new pillar of Overwatch will allow for the characters to show off more of their backstories and growing relationships with the other heroes.Overwatch has been the hero shooter for many years, so seeing its shift towards more PvE gameplay might be something of an adjustment for longtime fans. But according to Overwatch 2's lead producer Matthew Hawley and lead combat designer Geoff Goodman, it was a long time coming, and it's all about taking steps to move the franchise forward."It needed a change. Obviously, we've been really seeing new heroes and new maps and arcade, all these great features throughout time, but we've always had this big idea and we wanted to do this big, much larger game that couldn't quite be contained in the normal little patch cycle," said Goodman. "It was great initially when we had some of the cooperative stuff we released as live releases with special events, and seeing the response there was just like, 'Okay good people are on board. This is really cool because this is what we really wanted to do,' and just seeing the response here today has been amazing, so we're really, really excited."Overwatch 2 is about reframing its larger story in ways that the original's PvP focus could not. The prospect of PvE engagements isn't entirely a new thing in Overwatch. The limited-time events known Archives were essentially Overwatch's story missions and brought a squad of players together to fight off waves of enemies in narrative-driven adventures. As it turns out, these limited-timed events in the original game were just a sampling of what was to come with Overwatch 2. In the sequel, these have been evolved into new narrative-driven missions and stand-alone co-op engagements, which have a squad of players fight through levels full of enemies and mini-bosses. Overwatch 2's PvE also features a more in-depth character customization system, allowing you to select different perks and modifiers for the roster--it seems like Overwatch 2 is becoming a more fleshed out and varied game.At Blizzcon, we got to play a story mission set in Rio De Janeiro. While this map is a well-known place for PvP engagements, on this occasion, it's also hosting a fleshed-out story mission involving Tracer, Reinhardt, Mei, and Lucio, as they face off against minions from Null Sector, a growing extremist group bent on causing chaos in the world. As you're fighting through the stage, bashing, slashing, and shooting different AI robots, you'll hear banter from the various characters. The standout moment from the level was the climax, which had our team work together to destroy a reactor inside Null Sector's ship. While we were battling waves of monsters, we used our character's various skills to defend ourselves, and the new gadgets found in the mission allowed us to toss special grenades and activate turrets. It gave me similar vibes to Left 4 Dead, which focused on passive, in the moment storytelling to show off character moments and changes in the environment. However, a significant difference with Overwatch 2 is that these familiar heroes will evolve and grow over time. When playing in the PvE mode, you'll be able to develop and modify your character's skills. Playing as Reinhardt, I chose an ability called Frenzy, which caused his hammer swings to increase in speed after consecutive hits. For anyone who knows a particular character intimately, these changes are immediately noticeable. During PvE, these skills were immensely helpful against the waves of AI enemies we fought, but I couldn't help but think about what these new powers and modifiers could mean for PvP gameplay. This was a discussion that the developers have had for some time as it turns out. However, the developers stressed that the new skills and hero ability customization would be for the co-op missions only.Though it's a sequel that will offer new experiences, players who want to hold off on getting into Overwatch 2 can still play the first game, as it will receive new updates alongside the sequel. According to the developers, Overwatch 1 players will get to play with Overwatch 2 owners on the same PvP maps and see all the new multiplayer levels with free updates. New heroes in Overwatch 2 will also release for Overwatch 1 as well, which will make PvP gameplay mostly comparable between the two. However, if you want to see where Overwatch's new story and co-op missions go, you'll have to take the plunge and purchase the sequel."There's a lot of meat to Overwatch 2, but we thought it was really important that something like the new PvP mode Push and that all the multiple new maps that we're adding for each of the core game modes, will be available to fans who have been so loyal to us," said Hawley. "Overwatch 1 players can still play with Overwatch 2 players, even if they're not into all that other stuff. They'll still be able to get to play all of the competitive content add into Overwatch 2."At its core, Overwatch 2 was still very much the Overwatch you're familiar with, albeit with a new look for many of its heroes and some new locales to explore. The demo at Blizzcon 2019 showed off a lot of what made me enjoy Overwatch--those fun and exciting moments that we often see dramatized in Blizzard's trailers. Though we saw brief glimpses of those character moments in the familiar PvP engagements, the characters get to shine more in the new PvE mode, which I really dug. I could see myself spending a lot of time in the new missions, which will show off more backstories and new plot threads with the various heroes. Overwatch has always been about offering fun and active engagements with a crew of charismatic characters, and getting to see those characters in new forms of combat encounters--that still rely on team-work--was exciting. Blizzard is beginning to explore more of what makes Overwatch's world and characters so compelling, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the franchise goes from here. Now, all we need to figure out is when we'll play it.For more on all things Blizzcon 2019, including our hands-on with Diablo IV and comments from the Blizzard president J. Among the many new things introduced to Destiny 2 this week was another Exotic weapon quest, this one for Xenophage. Starting the quest and seeing it all the way through is challenging, but that didn't stop some players from quickly getting their hands on it--and finding themselves underwhelmed. As it turns out, the weapon is bugged, causing it to be less effective than intended. After players began to unlock Xenophage, posts began to pop up on places like Reddit wondering if something was wrong. The weapon was not dealing precision damage and was generally not great--not exactly what you'd expect from an Exotic light machine gun.In response to some of the feedback that's been shared about the new gun, Bungie community manager Cozmo23 wrote on Reddit, "I checked with the team on this. The fact that Xenophage does not do precision damage is not a bug and by design. However, the weapon is unintentionally underperforming and we are currently investigating." GameSpot's review scored it 2/10, saying, "WWE 2K's annual release schedule has felt superfluous for a number of years now. This has never been more apparent than with WWE 2K20, a game that's not only riddled with frequent technical issues, but one that's notably worse than its predecessor in almost every area--whether it's the dull and unenjoyable combat, the fact half the roster look like terrifying goblin facsimiles of themselves, or MyCareer's obnoxious and tedious story. It's been a wild couple of weeks for Blizzard, following the company's decision to punish professional Hearthstone player Ng Wai Chung (aka Blitzchung) after he used a post-match interview to express his support of the Hong Kong protests. Though Blizzard already released an official apology for its actions, the company took advantage of its platform at BlizzCon 2019 to further address the situation, although it didn't acknowledge any specifics about what it had done."Blizzard had the opportunity to bring the world together in a Hearthstone tournament," company president J. Allen Brack said. "We did not. We moved too quickly in our decision making, and to make matters worse we were too slow to talk with you. We didn't live up to the high standards we really set for ourselves, and second, we failed in our purpose. I'm sorry, and I accept accountability."Brack went on to talk about BlizzCon being an opportunity to showcase the global community for its games, and promised, "We will do better going forward."In response to the original ban against Blitzchung, a protest was organized that is currently ongoing just outside BlizzCon. "That Blizzard has shown a willingness to re-evaluate their decision is a small step in the right direction, but make no mistake; Blizzard continues to punish these individuals despite widespread outrage from gamers around the world," protest organizer Dayton Young said in a statement to GameSpot."We understand that game publishers and developers have a responsibility to moderate the content that appears on their platforms to ensure that gamers are safe from harassment, threats of violence, and other dangerous behavior," he continued. "But silencing gamers who speak up about issues that affect their freedom makes us all less safe from oppression and institutional abuse." Jordan Peele is one of the most in-demand genre filmmakers right now--as well as directing this year's horror hit Us, he's making a reboot of the classic Candyman and has produced the upcoming Amazon thriller series Hunters. The first teaser for Hunters has now been released. The show stars Al Pacino as the leader of a gang of Nazi-hunters in 1970s America. While the trailer is very short, it's really intense. We get to see Pacino crossing off the faces of his victims, intercut with dramatic shots of fighting, kidnapping, and a car blowing up. It looks dark and gripping, and we can't wait to see it. Check the trailer out below. The quest for righteous revenge begins. @huntersonprime, starring Al Pacino and executive produced by @JordanPeele, is coming soon to Prime Video. pic.twitter.com/lrmyqV9Ml7 — Amazon Prime Video US (@PrimeVideo) November 1, 2019An official synopsis for Hunters has also been released. It reads: "Hunters follows a diverse band of Nazi hunters living in 1977 New York City. The Hunters, as they're known, have discovered that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living among us and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the U.S. The eclectic team of Hunters will set out on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their new genocidal plans."Hunters was first announced in September 2018, when it had the title The Hunt. Of course, this was also the title of the controversial horror/thriller that was pulled from release in August, so it's not surprising it's been changed. There's no set release date for Hunters yet, but it will arrive sometime in 2020.As for the Candyman reboot that Peele is producing, that's set for release in May next year. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who appeared as Black Manta in Aquaman and was also recently announced for a role in The Matrix 4.Info from Gamespot.com

Blizzard kicked off BlizzCon 2019 with a big reveal: Diablo IV. The next installment in the beloved dungeon crawler series is in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it looks to embrace the franchise's darker origins. More details are expected during an ongoing panel focused on Diablo IV, but we already know quite a bit about the basics. The reveal came by way of an extended cinematic trailer, which set the tone for the game's more horrific atmosphere. Game director Luis Barriga took the stage following the trailer to shed more light on the title. Barriga summed up Diablo IV in three words: darkness, world, and legacy."The first thing you will notice is we are going back to the franchise's darker roots," Barriga said. "It'll mean blood and gore. It'll mean occult symbols and rituals. More importantly, it'll mean victories are neither clean nor guaranteed."The world of Diablo will also be more fleshed out in IV. "We've only seen glimpses into Sanctuary in previous Diablo games, but those glimpses have enthralled us and captured our imaginations," Barriga said. "With Diablo IV, we want to put the world of Sanctuary front and center. We want every character, every monster, every faction to have a sense of place."Sanctuary is more than just a backdrop in Diablo IV. "The world is also how you'll experience most of our game. It is there you'll find enemy camps and friendly towns alike. It is also where you'll find players to interact with them, whether it's to trade with them, group with them, or--should you choose to do so--murder each other in PvP zones."Barriga then shared the first gameplay trailer for Diablo IV. The game looks reminiscent of Diablo II, with an isometric perspective and more realistic art style than Diablo III. Three classes have been confirmed thus far: Sorceress (relies on fire, ice, and lightning magic in long-range combat); Barbarian (relies on swords, clubs, and axes in close-range combat); and Druid (relies on lightning, wind, and transformation magic in mid-range combat). Diablo IV was actually leaked ahead of its BlizzCon 2019 announcement. German magazine GameStar published an advertisement for The Art of Diablo, a book that includes over 500 pieces of artwork from the franchise. The advertisement shows that the book includes art from Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, and Diablo IV--revealing the existence of the fourth game weeks ahead of Blizzard's official announcement. Then, the day before BlizzCon, Reddit user PracticalBrush12--who has a track history for reliably leaking Diablo content--released most of Diablo IV's details.A June 2019 report stated that Blizzard cancelled a Starcraft first-person shooter in order to focus on developing Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, the latter of which is rumored to be announced at BlizzCon 2019. Blizzard has not confirmed whether the report is true.Last year, fans speculated Diablo IV would be announced at BlizzCon 2018. That ended up not being the case, and Blizzard instead revealed it had been working on a Diablo Immortal, a mobile game.Info from Gamespot.com

Coming to theaters on November 8 is Doctor Sleep. The new film is a sequel to the Stephen King novel The Shining, and the first reviews for the movie are in. Check a few of them out below. The upcoming film is directed by Mike Flanagan who is known for his recent horror hits Gerald's Game, Hush, and The Haunting of Hill House. In the years after the events of The Shining, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is now an adult and comes across a young girl with the same powers as him. Torrance has to protect her from a cult who hunts down children with these powers in order to keep them immortal.Currently, The Shining has 18 reviews on GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, coming in at 59 out of 100. Below, you'll find excerpts from selected reviews highlighting both the good and bad about the upcoming movie.Gamespot - 8/10"[Director Mike] Flanagan finds ways to evoke the ambiance and tone of the Kubrick film that never overstay their welcome with cleverly matched shots, sound design, and character cameos. Even the handful of early flashbacks to Dan's childhood manage to feel tasteful and appropriate. It's in the final 45 minutes or so that the balancing act starts to feel precarious, but by that time, the characters themselves will have you so hooked that you'll be willing to forgive the less-than-subtle nostalgia overload." - Meg Downey [Full Review]A/V Club - C+"The dirty trick of Doctor Sleep is that it’s just another nostalgic franchise extension, turning one character’s therapeutic journey into a convenient excuse to play the hits. Whether audiences will be willing to trudge through a slightly dopey, marginally similar fantasy yarn to reach the entrance of that old hotel is a question for the shiners." - A.A. Dowd [Full Review]Entertainment Weekly - C+"Doctor Sleep aims for redemption — it’s Feel-Good Horror — but the scary hotel is just a scary hotel now. And not even so scary, when you’ve seen it all before." - Darren Franich [Full Review]Time Out - 2/5"For all of its supernatural majesty, The Shining, both on the page and onscreen, was about writer’s block and the secret fear of being discovered as a fraud. Doctor Sleep is unwittingly about that as well; it digitally re-creates the snowy Overlook Hotel as a site for a boring telekinetic showdown, not realizing that it has constructed a tombstone to itself." - Joshua Rothkopf [Full Review]USA Today - 3/4"Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep" respects both King's and Kubrick's visions while letting a rising horror master go his own way, too." - Brian Truitt [Full Review]IGN - 8.5/10"When it's focusing on the new things it brings to the table, Doctor Sleep is consistently terrifying, visually impressive, and soulful in equal measure. Though it may get a little heavy-handed and tonally confused in its reverence for Stanley Kubrick's Shining in the homestretch, the vast majority of the film succeeds in using the Torrance family’s pain to tell a story of coming to terms with the past." - Tom Jorgensen [Full Review]Screen Crush - 7/10"Doctor Sleep may be based on a book and a movie and a book that was a sequel to the first book, but much of it feels like it was ripped right out of Mike Flanagan's soul. Like HBO's new Watchmen series, Flanagan's Doctor Sleep doesn’t simply rehash its source material, and instead uses its characters, setting, and themes in smart and novel ways." - Matt Singer [Full Review]Doctor Sleep arrives on November 8. BlizzCon 2019 kicked off with the official reveal of Diablo 4, the upcoming entry in the long-time RPG franchise. While we got to see a lengthy cinematic trailer, a gameplay trailer soon followed that showed three classic classes in action: Barbarian, Sorceress, and Druid. All three classes call back to Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion pack. Barbarian looks to be a close-range melee class that can dual-wield axes and use a number of physical abilities, while Sorceress is a magic-based class that can combine spells to wreak havoc from long-range. And Druid separates itself from the pack with a spell to transform into a bear of sorts, attack from mid-range with some magic. You can see all this in the gameplay video below.Diablo IV maintains the classic isometric action RPG formula, but adds more like multi-level terrain with verticality. The game also appears to sport a darker, more realistic looking art style, a slight departure from Diablo III's cartoon-ish vibe. DIablo IV is set decades after the events of Diablo III's Reaper of Souls expansion. The final shot of the trailer shows Lilith in-game, who seems to be the main villain this time around based on the cinematic trailer. There will be five classes in total, but the final two have not yet been announced. The game world will be much larger than that of previous games, featuring five distinct but contiguous regions. To help you get around more quickly, you'll have access to a mount and even be able to use dismount abilities, letting Barbarians, for instance, leap off and perform an attack in one smooth motion.Blizzard president J. Allen Brack says the game has been under development for quite some time--it's also playable on the show floor. During BlizzCon 2019, a new trailer for the next expansion for World of Warcraft, Shadowlands, was released. The trailer focuses on Sylvanas as she takes on Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, the Lich King. You can watch the trailer below. In the trailer, Sylvanas journies to the Ice Crown Citadel and approaches the Frozen Throne, where Bolvar sits. As she approaches him, Bolvar's orange flames begin to glow with an icy blue and he rises to meet Sylvanas' challenge. The fight is pretty epic, but also fairly one-sided. As strong as Bolvar is, Sylvanas is just stronger. She ultimately takes him down, removes his crown, and chooses to destroy it. The act rips the sky open, raining hellfire on the ice-covered landscape. "This world is a prison," Sylvanas says with a grimace. "And I will set us all free."In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, death is coming for you so you have to journey to the place where no living soul has ever gone before: the Shadowlands--basically the afterlife of the Warcraft universe. On your journey, you'll encounter the Fallen, those who have died in the story up to this point, and learn what ultimately became of them.In the Shadowlands, spirits go through a cycle of death and rebirth creating a new type of environment for WoW. In the new expansion, you'll journey to new zones like Revendreth, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, and Bastion where you'll choose a covenant and engage in brand-new dungeons and raids. "Shadowlands is an expansion built around the agency of choice," game director Ion Hazzikostas said.World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is scheduled to release date in 2020.
