Though Blizzard lessened Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai's punishment following the overwhelming backlash, some Hearthstone developers thought the company's handling of the professional player was "too harsh."In an interview with Kotaku at BlizzCon 2019, game director Ben Lee wished Blizzard took better care of the Blitzchung situation. "The initial decision was too harsh. Absolutely," Lee said. "Definitely should have taken more time to consider something more reasonable, but we can't take that back."While creative director Ben Thompson ultimately supports Blitzchung's right to free speech, the Hearthstone developer felt a professional tournament wasn't the place to express those views.“Of course I celebrate--as we all do to some extent or another--free speech. You should be able to say what it is you want to say," Thompson said. "I also understand what [Blizzard president] J. Allen Brack himself addressed in his own internal communications and later on to the world at large, which is that being able to speak your mind and say how you feel from a personal level is always and should always be a welcome thing. Doing so from a platform very much not your own and done from a voice not your own to take control, so to speak, or on behalf of another is not free speech. That is on behalf of something that’s not yours to do with.”Blitzchung was initially banned for one year and lost all of his prize winnings after expressing support for democracy in Hong Kong during a post-match Hearthstone Grandmasters interview. Blizzard received widespread criticism online and from protesters, to which the company responded by reducing Blitzchung's ban to six months and giving back his thousands of dollars in winnings."We've had a chance to pause, to listen to our community, and to reflect on what we could have done better. In hindsight, our process wasn't adequate, and we reacted too quickly," Brack said in a statement. "We want to ensure that we maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all our players, and that our rules and processes are clear. All of this is in service of another important Blizzard value--Play Nice; Play Fair."Brack addressed the controversial decision during BlizzCon's opening ceremony, stating the company failed to adhere to its principles. "We moved too quickly in our decision making, and to make matters worse we were too slow to talk with you," Brack said. "We didn't live up to the high standards we really set for ourselves, and second, we failed in our purpose. I'm sorry, and I accept accountability."Hong Kong has seen several protests in recent months. A protest also occurred at BlizzCon, where participants demonstrated outside the Anaheim Convention Center venue on November 1. Disco Elysium has released to near-universal critical acclaim, delivering a story-driven detective RPG where your character is trying to solve a murder investigation while suffering from alcohol-induced amnesia. One of the game's more noteworthy features is the Thought Cabinet, an inventory system that allows you to unlock benefits from internalizing certain thoughts. Apparently, it wasn't always so beneficial."The original effects of the Thought Cabinet projects were to be more negative," Disco Elysium lead writer Robert Kurvitz said, according to VG247. "Oftentimes you would get straight up curses." Developer ZA/UM shifted gears on the Thought Cabinet in order to inject a little positivity in an otherwise fairly bleak story--redesigning the feature to showcase the thoughts the detective was mulling over, instead of obsessions warping their mind.Kurvitz believes that humans can sometimes become too preoccupied with the notion that our ability to think is ultimately one of our biggest downfalls. In Disco Elysium, the protagonist's Thought Cabinet was redesigned to reflect the notion that, though human thoughts can be bad, they can also be a saving grace in dark, difficult times--a lifeline to keep people grounded. "Sometimes when I'm overwhelmed by negative emotions, I like to go on Wikipedia," Kurvitz said. "Read an article on Sir Francis Younghusband, Pleistocene megafauna, whatever. It's not only torturous to think--to be the kind of animal us humans are. It is also an absolute pleasure and a privilege."Disco Elysium is the 16th game in GameSpot's history that the website has given a 10/10 review score. In GameSpot's Disco Elysium review, David Wildgoose wrote, "Disco Elysium is a mad, sprawling detective story where the real case you've got to crack isn't who killed the man strung up on a tree in the middle of town--though that in itself, replete with dozens of unexpected yet intertwined mysteries and wild excursions into the ridiculous, is engrossing enough to sustain the game. Rather, it’s an investigation of ideas, of the way we think, of power and privilege, and of how all of us are shaped, with varying degrees of autonomy, by the society we find ourselves in."Disco Elysium is currently only available for PC. Console ports for PS4 and Xbox One are scheduled for 2020.Info from Gamespot.com

Dino Patti thinks that 4K gaming is of little consequence to developers, and is just yet another PC and console upgrade being advertised to help sell hardware. Patti is the co-founder and former CEO of Playdead--the developer behind Limbo and Inside--who left the studio in 2016 and went on to start new companies."I think [4K gaming] is useless," Patti said at Reboot Develop, according to VG247. "It's something that's being pushed by tech vendors to push the next console." Both Microsoft and Sony's next-gen consoles--Project Scorpio and PS5 respectively--will support 4K and have a max output resolution of 8K. "[Manufacturers] don't respect the natural evolution of games and you force technology," he added. "Microsoft with Kinect, they paid studios to make a lot of s***ty games."After leaving Playdead, Patti went on to be the co-founder for both Coherence and Jumpship. Coherence is working to create a cloud-based, open-source development platform. Jumpship is in the midst of developing its first game, Somerville, which tells a science fiction story about the lives of people who survive a global catastrophe. In terms of both tone and graphics, it looks a lot like Limbo and Inside--games that don't necessarily require 4K graphics to convey their unsettlingly eerie atmosphere."I want to select a path by myself and not be drawn in by money from tech vendors," Patti said. "There's a lot of people that see something shiny and follow that. You can definitely see all the herd walking one way and falling."Back at Playdead, the studio is currently in the midst of developing its third game, which is still unannounced. Playdead has been teasing the project since January 2017, when the studio tweeted an image from the new game. Since then, Playdead has included additional images and concept art in tweets and job postings for the new game--the latter of which have also implied that this third title will take place in a 3D space as opposed to the 2D side-scroller format seen in Limbo and Inside.Info from Gamespot.com

Netflix recently generated controversy when it introduced an experimental new feature that allows viewers to speed up (or slow down) the playback speed of movies and TV shows. Numerous creatives from Hollywood spoke out against it, including 40-Year-Old Virgin director Judd Apatow, who pleaded with Netflix to not "f**k with our timing." Only a small number of Netflix users have access to the beta test, but it still generated lots of buzz, and now the CEO of Netflix has responded.Speaking at the DealBook 2019 event, Reed Hastings started off by clarifying that the variable playback speed options are only an experiment to gauge consumer interest. He said Netflix cares about making sure both creators and consumers have a good experience.Hastings also pointed out that, a while ago, people vocally criticized Netflix's decision to introduce the "skip intro" button, while others took issue with movies coming to mobile devices altogether."Our job is to have both creators and consumers feel excited about Netflix. Both are important audiences. Sometimes we do things like 'Play Next Episode' over the credits. Or, a long time ago, it was watching a movie on a mobile phone--that was seen as a terrible thing," Hastings said. "'How can you let my art be seen on a mobile phone?'"Netflix is trying to make the service appeal to both creators and consumers--both markets are "very important," Hastings said. "In the speed up, which was only 1.5X, it's an experiment, we're always doing experiments to try to see, 'Do consumers even care about that?'"If the variable playback speeds prove to be popular with consumers, Netflix will work with content creators to try to hammer out the details and specifics about best practices, Hastings said. "We do care about creators and the creative intent and vision but we also care about consumers," he said, adding that variable playback speeds have been available on DVD players for decades already. Finally, Hastings pointed out that the entire reason Netflix has the "Skip Intro" button is because users called for it. This was a controversial introduction, he said, because not all creators wanted consumers to be able to watch a show without seeing the intro or credits. In other Netflix news, Hastings confirmed that the company has no plans to release a game-streaming service of its own. The company sees Fortnite as a competitor, but its goal is to create compelling content to get people to put down the controller and boot up Netflix. For more on what's new on Netflix in November, check out this roundup of all the new TV show and movies on Netflix. A lot of big companies are getting into gaming with their own streaming services, including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and others, but don't expect Netflix to follow suit.Speaking at the DealBook 2019 event, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed that the company has no plans to enter that market. Instead, Netflix is spending its time focusing on highly compelling TV shows and movies that will encourage people to put down the controller and boot up Netflix."No," Hastings said when asked if Netflix might make a game-streaming service. "We're really focused on doing incredible series and films and unscripted."Earlier this year, Netflix said the company competes more with Fortnite than HBO when it comes to entertainment usage. There are a finite number of hours in the day, and even fewer that people can spend consuming entertainment, so Netflix sees Fortnite as a competitor in that regard."There are a lot of other things people do to entertain themselves, including Fortnite. And the original quote was that we compete with Fortnite more than we compete with HBO. Fortnite gets a lot more hours of viewing," he said at the event today. "Ultimately it's about competing for those hours of viewing. But we don't compete with Fortnite better by doing something like [a streaming service] because we're not very good at that. We compete by doing the most amazing TV shows you've ever seen so you put down Fortnite and you come to watch our shows."In 2011, Netflix announced plans to offer Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii games for rental by mail, though it scuttled these plans not long after announcing them. At the time, the company said it was "still considering" offering games to rent by mail but this never happened. In the initial Qwikster announcement, Hastings himself spoke about how enthusiastic the Netflix audience was for games. "Members have been asking for video games for many years, and now that DVD-by-mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done," he said. The next major new game-streaming service to launch is Google Stadia, which is primed to launch on November 19 in the US.For more on what's new on Netflix in November, check out this roundup of all the new TV show and movies on Netflix. With the Shadowkeep expansion to Destiny 2, developer Bungie made it possible to reach all-new heights in terms of players' overall Power level--the measure of a Guardian's strength based on their equipment. The addition of the Seasonal Artifact in the current season allows you to keep climbing beyond the gear Power cap of 960. Now, one player has reached another Power milestone, one that has some serious implications for Destiny 2's ongoing story. This week, streamer Bagel4k pushed his Power level up to 999 thanks to the Seasonal Artifact, which allows you to keep gaining in Power endlessly by accruing experience points from completing activities and turning in bounties. That's impressive from a sheer gameplay standpoint--it takes 1.5 million experience points to gain one point of Power from the artifact, and the push to get your gear up from 950 to 960 is so tough, Bungie is patching the game later this week to make that final climb a little easier. (For context, it takes 100,000 points to unlock each new level of Bungie's new Season system.) But 999 Power is also very significant to the story of the Forsaken expansion's endgame area, the Dreaming City. Destiny 2 Recent News Destiny 2 Iron Banner: Scour The Rust Quest Steps For New Armor PSA: Destiny 2's Iron Banner Is Back, But Don't Redeem Pinnacle Rewards Yet Destiny 2 Xenophage: How To Start The Exotic Weapon Quest Destiny 2 Exotic Bow: "Make Bows, Not War" Quest Steps For Leviathan's Breath For context, the Dreaming City is currently cursed to continually repeat a three-week timeloop, thanks to the machinations of a powerful Hive leader called Savathun. Despite completing the Last Wish raid in the Dreaming City and its high-level dungeon, Shattered Throne, Guardians so far have been unable to break the curse. But there was some suggestion that hitting 999 Power would be the secret to ending the Dreaming City's torment. According to one of Destiny 2's lore books, Truth To Power, reaching 999 Power and completing Shattered Throne would allow players to finally kill Savathun's daughter, Dul Incaru, and end the curse once and for all.As Bagel4k discovered, however, that's apparently not the case--at least, not yet. Despite Bagel4k's efforts, the curse endures. Bungie acknowledged the situation in a blog post titled "On the Power Climb," which not only pays some tribute to Bagel4k, it functions as a story point as well. The blog post mixes Bungie's voice in acknowledging Bagel4k with some secret messages from Savathun herself. Though there isn't much in the way of details, the post suggests that perhaps Guardians' efforts to break the curse are actually part of Savathun's whole overall plan. That's sort of Savathun's whole deal--she embodies an ideal of cunning. And the lore suggests that everything players have done in the Dreaming City up to now hasn't actually helped to stop Savathun, but were actually actions manipulated to help her achieve her goals of gaining ultimate power. All the enemies we've been killing over and over in the Dreaming City have been feeding Savathun, and that's what the timeloop curse is all about.Bungie has said that the four seasons that make up the third year of Destiny 2's content will tell an ongoing story that started with Shadowkeep, but most of the threads from Year Two--concerning the Dreaming City, the entities known as the Nine, the enigmatic new character called the Drifter, and more--are still hanging. Shadowkeep advanced things a bit in a different direction concerning the Hive, but it all goes back to Savathun. We can guess from Bagel4k's exploits that Bungie isn't quite ready for the story of the Dreaming City to end, nor to tell us what it all means, just yet.Info from Gamespot.com

It's going to be a while before we get another season of Stranger Things, with season 4 set to start shooting in January 2020, and will premiere in the summer at the earliest. We've already gotten our first little tease of what we're likely to see when the series eventually returns, but after a great season three many fans will be eager for any new Stranger Things content they can get their hands on.Thankfully, the Stranger Things YouTube account has delivered today, posting blooper reels for all three seasons for us to enjoy . Don't expect any revelations about process here, or deep insights into the personal lives of the characters, or hints towards future seasons here--it's a lot of flubbed lines, things falling down, and footage of kids dancing. It's all very charming, and a great reminder of how important the cast's natural chemistry is to the series' success. The season 1 blooper reel is a flashback to a younger cast, and is by far the shortest. Here's the season 2 blooper reel, where you can check out a lot of the cast's dance moves. The blooper reel for the show's third season has a stronger emphasis on flubbed lines (albeit still with some dancing), and is a bit longer overall. It shows how well the cast plays off each other behind the scenes, and hints at the camaraderie and friendship that have built up between them over three seasons of filming. Of particular note is David Harbour's hilarious inability to deliver the line "it's your grandma" without cracking up.Today is Stranger Things Day--November 6, 1983 was the date on which Will Byers disappeared into the Upside Down, and the Blooper Reels have been released to celebrate (or commemorate). If you're hungry for more behind-the-scenes content, here are 15 on-set photos released shortly after Stranger Things 3 debuted. It's also worth checking out our list of season 3's best Easter eggs.Info from Gamespot.com

Indie platformer Gris was celebrated at launch for its beautiful art (among other things), and plenty of folks took notice of its gorgeous sense of style. Now, it seems that one designer took too much notice and copied many elements of the game's style in their own work for wellness app 'The Fabulous'.Gris publisher Digital Devolver publicly accused the app makers of ripping off Gris' artwork in a tweet, which includes a side-by-side video of the app running alongside Gris. In the tweet, they warn other developers to be careful of "big companies and brands stealing creative work" from them. The Fabulous app (@GetTheFabulous) ripped off GRIS and is reminder to all devs to be mindful of big companies and brands stealing creative work from smaller studios. pic.twitter.com/scg20wt4Vj — Devolver Digital (@devolverdigital) November 5, 2019The Fabulous took notice, and took the video down. Speaking with Gamasutra, Fabulous' CEO Sami Ben stated that the team's wrongdoing was "unintentional," and that the team has been inspired by several other games in their work, including Journey and Monument Valley. "We have a team of two artists and freelancers, and that video was created a few months ago," Ben said. "We're still investigating this as all of this has been sudden, but any wrongdoing from our side is not intentional. It might be that one of our artists or freelancers got inspired by a game that they liked."Fabulous also followed up on Twitter, directly tweeting at Devolver Digital about the situation.Similar to you, we’re a small startup inspired by the things we love. We have removed the video as a preemptive action & are investigating. We've privately contacted Devolver Digital to resolve this. Any wrongdoing on our part was certainly not intentional. — The Fabulous (@GetTheFabulous) November 5, 2019Following this, The Fabulous conducted an investigation, and ultimately made a post on Medium with a direct explanation from the designer who made the video in question. "When I was about to start the animation, I told our design lead that I was gonna get inspired from a game called 'Gris' for the animation," they wrote. He never played the game, so he gave me the OK for 'getting inspired'. I took the word 'inspired' way too far.""I took things way too far and what I thought I was managing got slipped out of my control without me even noticing. Our lead designer had no idea about that since he, like I said, didn’t play the game. I am the only person responsible for this catastrophe. As a content creator, I am ashamed that I ended up copying someone else’s hard work, and believe me this is the first time that I know of this has happened to me."Gris launched on PC and Switch late last year, and also came to iOS in September 2019.Info from Gamespot.com

Rocket League will change how upgrades and rewards work next month when Crates are replaced by Blueprints. Paid Crates are on their way out, and Blueprints will use a new premium currency, Credits (which are replacing Keys). Blueprints will let you see exactly what they're going to build, so it's always clear what you're getting for your money. This will take some of the randomness out of the loot game in Rocket League.Developer Psyonix has further detailed how Blueprints will work in a new post on the official Rocket League website. Once the update hits, online matches will begin to reward players with "revealed" Blueprints. You can build the items on these Blueprints by spending Credits, hold onto them for a while, or trade them with another player. Any existing Crates that you have in your inventory when this update occurs will change to "unrevealed" Blueprints, which you can then change to revealed Blueprints at no extra cost.Players will be able to trade Blueprints with one another, just as they're currently able to trade items (which will remain the case going forward). You'll be able to trade revealed Blueprints, as well as items that have been built from Blueprints, as well as Credits (although you cannot trade Credits for other Credits or give them away, only for items and Blueprints). You will not be able to trade Unrevealed Blueprints.Any Decryptors you have in your inventory will be turned into "Bonus Gifts" after the update. These will contain items from the Vindicator Crate series and the first Blueprint Series, which is called the Revival Series. The Revival Series will "bring back some fan-favorite items throughout Rocket League's history."2019 has been a big year for Rocket League, despite the game being over four years old now. Earlier this year, Psyonix was bought by Epic Games, which saw Rocket League moving over to the Epic Games Store (although it's also still available on Steam). Paid Crates were also removed from the game in both Belgium and the Netherlands; soon the rest of the world will follow.Info from Gamespot.com

Deep Down was first announced in 2013 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, but we haven't seen or heard much from it since. The last news we heard was all the way back in 2015, when producer Yoshinori Ono said that the game would look "completely different" from the initial trailer the next time we saw it, and that the game was aiming for a very realistic experience. But the game has not been seen since, beyond a trademark renewal in 2017 that got fans' hopes up. Now, Ono has spoken about the game for the first time in years, and it sounds like the game is not being worked on, but could theoretically still happen. In an interview with Eurogamer that primarily focuses on Street Fighter V (which he is also executive producer on), Ono briefly discussed the long-dormant dragon hunting game, admitting that he still has some hope that the game will be completed one day."The original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we've kept the trademark registered, and it's not been completely given up on," he told Eurogamer. "Every year we examine titles we're doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There's not much I can say about it, but if you've noticed we've kept the trademark it means we haven't given up on the title completely."When asked about the TGS trailer from 2014, Ono said that the team had "the concept developed a bit further than that."This isn't confirmation that Deep Down will still happen, but it suggests that the game's eventual release remains a possibility. It certainly wouldn't be the first major PlayStation title to take its time releasing: The Last Guardian was first revealed seven years before its eventual release, while Until Dawn was announced as a PlayStation 3 title five years before its eventual PS4 release. Then there's Shenmue III, which will release on November 19, a full 18 years after Shenmue II.Info from Gamespot.com

The director of DC's incredibly popular Joker movie has ended the debate about whether a certain character in the film lived or died. READ ON BELOW FOR THE SPOILER-Y DETAILS.A significant plot point in Joker is the relationship that Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) has with his neighbor, Sophie (Zazie Beetz). Arthur and Sophie fall fast in love, or so the movie would you have think. In reality, Arthur's entire relationship with Sophie was in his mind. This comes to a head when, in the second half of the movie, Arthur visits Sophie in her apartment and she is alarmed, given they had no relationship in reality. The movie then shows Arthur walking down the hallway with no resolution--and this is the last time we see Sophie. Some viewers wondered if Arthur killed Sophie. He did not, Phillips--who also wrote Joker--confirmed to IndieWire."He doesn't kill her, definitively," Phillips said. "As the filmmaker and the writer I am saying he doesn't kill her. We like the idea that it's almost like a litmus test for the audience to say, 'How crazy is he?'""Most people that I've spoken to think he didn't kill her because they understand the idea that he only kills people that did him wrong," he added. "She had nothing to do with it. Most people understood that, even as a villain, he was living by a certain code. Of course he didn't kill this woman down the hall."Phillips did not always plan to be ambiguous about what happened to Sophie. He revealed that an earlier draft of the movie showed Sophie-- alive and well in her apartment--watching the interview that Arthur gave to Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro), which would have confirmed she was still alive. The fate of Sophie was already confirmed by cinematographer Lawrence Sher, but this is seemingly the first time that Phillips himself is addressing it.Joker has made almost $940 million at the box office, which makes it a tremendous success given it was produced on a $70 million budget.
