Nintendo expects big things from the newly released mobile racing game, Mario Kart Tour. President Shuntaro Furukawa said in a recent earnings Q&A that the Japanese gaming giant expects the mobile game to have great results. It has big shoes to fill, as Super Mario Run has been downloaded more than 300 million times, but things are going well already.Mario Kart Tour released at the end of September, and Furukawa said the game got off to a "very good start" compared to Nintendo's previous mobile games. "Continuing on from Super Mario Run, which more than 300 million consumers are enjoying, I think we can expect remarkable results with Mario Kart Tour," Furukawa said.Despite the millions of downloads, Nintendo went on record to say that Super Mario Run was a disappointment as it relates to revenue. That game is free-to-start, and players need to spend $10 to unlock the full game. That's a different payment model than Mario Kart Tour, and the shift seems to be paying off. Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play title supported by microtransactions. Furukawa said of the game's profitability so far that "earnings are also off to a good start."The microtransactions in Mario Kart Tour come in the form of random items and the Gold Pass subscription package. "By including these mechanics and multiplayer functionality, we want to make it an attractive application that will be enjoyed by consumers in the long-term," Furukawa said. Also during the Q&A, Furukawa was asked if Nintendo would release Mario Kart Tour in China, but the executive declined to say. He said only, "I cannot say anything at this time about the mobile business in China."According to SensorTower, Mario Kart Tour had more than 120 million downloads in its first month, with players collectively spending more than $37 million. One of the most popular TV shows of all time, Friends, might be coming back--in a way. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that a "unscripted reunion special" featuring all six core stars is being considered for HBO Max, which sounds like it wouldn't be a traditional episode. Series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane are also said to be involved.Fans should not get too excited just yet, however, as the report says the deal is "far from done." Contracts with the cast and creators are reportedly not yet finalized. Should all sides come to terms, the production would then need to find a time to shoot between everyone's busy schedules. THR also mentions that this could all fall apart, as is known to happen in Hollywood.Friends features Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry in the career-defining roles of six friends from New York. The original Friends was produced by Warner Bros. TV and aired on NBC. The new reunion show, if it happens, would be made for the Warner-supported HBO Max. That platform launches in 2020, and it plans to charge $15 USD/month for access to a catalog of old shows and movies, as well as new, original content.Friends, like other, older shows, has enjoyed a long lease on life thanks to streaming. The show is currently exclusive to Netflix in the US, but that is set to change soon. Friends will leave Netflix at the end of 2019 before shifting to HBO Max. WarnerMedia reportedly paid $85 million per year to get Friends for a period of five years.Kauffman and Crane have said for a long time that they don't want to reboot Friends, but this new program appears to be a one-off reunion of some kind. In October, Aniston told Ellen Degeneres that something new for Friends was in the works. "We're working on something," Aniston said.As of 2015, the show was bringing in $1 billion every year from syndication, with all the main stars making $20 million a year from that based on their 2 percent share of syndication revenue, according to USA Today. Pokemon has appeared on Nintendo Switch with Pokken Tournament and the Let's Go games, but Pokemon Sword and Shield marks the series' big generation-shifting debut on Nintendo's latest hardware. And like each new generation, that means new characters, a new region, and a bunch of new monsters for fans to collect.Reviews for Pokemon Sword and Shield have started to publish ahead of its release on November 15. The critics agree that this edition of the long-running series trims some of its more unwieldy elements but keeps the most important elements well intact and more streamlined for fans. That opinion was reflected in GameSpot's Pokemon Sword and Shield review."In collecting, battling, and exploring, Sword and Shield cut out the bloat and focus on what makes these pillars of the Pokemon games so captivating in the first place," Kallie Plagge wrote. "You're not held back by overly complicated back-end systems or hoops to jump through; from the outset, you can start wandering the Galar region, seeing its new Pokemon, and trying out its new battle strategies with very little in your way. This leaves you free to enjoy what Pokemon is all about, and that makes for an incredibly strong showing for the series' proper debut on Switch."We've collected a smattering of critical opinions below. For an even wider view, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic. And for more great Switch games, check out our roundup of November's best Switch games so far.Game: Pokemon Sword and ShieldPlatforms: Nintendo SwitchDeveloper: Game FreakRelease date: November 15Price: $60 / £45 / $62 AUD See at Amazon GameSpot - 9/10"With each new Pokemon game comes a new set of Pokemon, mechanics, and a region to discover, and Sword and Shield are no exception. The vibrant Galar region is a consistent delight to explore, incentivizing and rewarding collecting and battling in equal measure, and grandiose battles add an exciting dimension to the familiar Gym formula to deliver an engaging adventure beginning to end. But most notably, Sword and Shield cut down on the tedious and protracted elements from previous games in favor of amplifying what makes Pokemon great in the first place. This is the most balanced a Pokemon game has felt in a long time, and with that, Sword and Shield mark the best new generation of Pokemon games in years." - Kallie Plagge [Full Review]IGN - 9.3/10"Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are closer to my dream Pokemon RPGs than anything that’s come before. I'd still like better cutscenes, companion Pokemon, the complete Pokedex, and a more visually interesting Wild Area, but nitpicks are just not very effective when everything else was such a complete joy to play. The way they respect my time is wonderful, and the removal of monotony from random encounters and other odds and ends distills it down to only the pure and charming fun of capturing, training, and battling wonderful creatures. And hey, if I'm missing any tedious repetition, I can always get back into breeding." - Casey DeFreitas [Full Review]GamesRadar - 4.5/5"Thankfully though, this is a seriously memorable Pokemon adventure. The story delivers enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, steeped in the kinds of myths and legends that you forget the British Isles are chock-full of. It might lack the puzzling areas of previous series' entries like Silph Co, but there's plenty to love about Pokemon Sword and Shield, especially the loveable cast of characters, and the impeccable attention to detail in the Galar region both visually and in terms of the regional dialogue. It's a great way to start the next core generation of Pokemon games." - Sam Loveridge [Full Review]Game Informer - 8.75/10"Pokemon Sword & Shield are strong first attempts for the series’ full transition to consoles. While some frustrations hold it back from true legendary status, this new generation proves the Pokemon franchise is still great more than two decades after its debut." - Brian Shea [Full Review]VG247 - 3/5"Pokemon Sword & Shield is all too often a bit disappointing, and in some places actually feels a little unfinished, but it also fully provides that warm, fuzzy feeling that one expects from the series. Crucially, even through frustration, never once did I think about putting it down, which is to its credit. It comes recommended almost for the Galar setting and new Pokemon alone, but with a long list of caveats indeed. With the level of fan hyperbole surrounding this release, that recommendation is worth repeating and underscoring--but this is not the revolution that was promised or hoped for, and some may prefer to wait for a sale or wait and see if an improved, definitive release is on the cards." - Alex Donaldson [Full Review]US Gamer - No Score"Pokemon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch is a solid reminder that Pokemon will probably never run out of the stardust that helps keep it an endearing franchise for old and young alike. It's also a solid reminder that Game Freak is unlikely to unchain itself from the 'Three Starters, Eight Gyms' formula that launched Pokemon into the stratosphere to begin with." - Nadia Oxford [Review in Progress]The products discussed here were independently chosen by our editors. The Star Wars movies are some of the biggest titles available on Disney+, which finally launched this week. All but two of the 10 movies released to date are available to stream right now--and, quietly, Disney has released them with a surprise but very welcome feature: They have the added bonus of being available in 4K and HDR, most for the first time ever. The original trilogy, the prequels, The Force Awakens, and the spin-off Rogue One are all on Disney+ in 4K and HDR (both HDR10 and Dolby Vision). Of these, only the latter two have been released in the format before. Disney+ offers a wide variety of movies and shows from Disney's catalog, including loads from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One notable omission, though, is the popular character Spider-Man. And sure enough, the wallcrawler won't be joining the streaming service, as Disney+ head of content and marketing Ricky Strauss says the company has no plans to pursue it."We love our friends at Sony, but we don’t have any plans to have the live-action Spider-Man movies on Disney+” Strauss told The Verge. "We will have all the Spider-Man animated shows that we did so they'll be on there under the Marvel banner. But who knows what can happen in the future?"The two Spider-Man films, Homecoming and Far From Home, represent a relatively large hole in the MCU. Aside from being one of Marvel's most popular characters, Homecoming builds Spidey's relationship with Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) that becomes a key emotional beat in Infinity War and Endgame. Far From Home served as an epilogue to Endgame, showing how characters in the Marvel universe move on after those massive events. At the same time, it's unsurprising. Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man films, and Marvel had to broker a deal to use the character in the first place. Earlier this year that deal appeared in jeopardy for future films, but was saved for a third movie--with a little personal advocacy from actor Tom Holland.Strauss does note that there is Spider-Man content on the service. Disney+ even has a dedicated Spider-Man section that can be found in its Search page. That includes animated Spider-Man shows from various eras, including the 1990s Spider-Man animated series, the team-up Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, and the Ultimate Spider-Man series in 2011. Launch day for Disney+ was a bit rough as many people had issues accessing the new streaming service. This resulted in quite a few people not being able to access shows like The Mandalorian. However, this is all because Disney didn't anticipate just how many people would be signing up for the new streaming service.Disney revealed just 24 hours after its initial launch that the streaming service has hit a benchmark, 10 million subscribers. And even more interesting, Disney+ is only available in US, Canada, and the Netherlands right now. Disney went on to say in a press release that they will no longer be discussing numbers for the streaming service outside of quarterly investor calls. It will be very interesting to see global numbers once the service releases in Europe in 2020. If you're interested in Disney+, there is a free one-week trial available, and Verizon is giving away one-year memberships.Launch day for Disney+ was a rough one. Bethesda has announced the closure of Human Head studios, alongside the opening of a new studio composed of some of its key staff members. The new developer is called Roundhouse Studios and will operate out of Madison, Wisconsin. Bethesda says it will immediately begin work on unannounced projects."Sadly, we had to wind down the business of Human Head Studios and close its doors, which was particularly devastating due to the passion and creativity of the team we'd assembled," said Roundhouse creative director Chris Rhinehart, in the announcement. "We reached out to our friends at Bethesda for help, and they saw that same creativity and passion in our team. Disney+ is finally with us, and Marvel is a big part of the service. There are a number of live-action Marvel shows in the works, but while we wait for those, various movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are available to watch right now . Disney+ launched with 16 MCU titles, and although there were notable omissions, we know when some of the missing films will be released.Of the seven missing MCU films, four will hit the service over the next eight months. Thor: Ragnarok will arrive first, on December 5, 2019, with Black Panther joining the collection on March 4, 2020. Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp will follow on June 25 and July 29 respectively. The movies are currently listed on Disney+, and the delay is explained as "existing agreements." The hold-up is that they are still licensed to Netflix, and can't move over to Disney+ until that deal finishes. Streaming giant Netflix has signed a new, multi-year partnership with Nickelodeon to create original animated entertainment based on Nickelodeon's catalog and never-before-seen characters. The details surrounding this new deal are still unknown, according to Engadget. However, the two previously joined forces to produce and distribute two entries in classic Nickelodeon properties: Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus and Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, which premiered on Netflix in August 2019. Further, both companies previously announced a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake, with the show's original creators attached as producers of this brand-new reimagining.Netflix recently came under fire for testing a new feature for select users, where the company experimented with options to change the playback speed to 0.5x, 0.75x, 1.0x, 1.25x, and 1.5x. Several directors, comedians, actors, and other creators criticized this experimental feature, citing it as an infringement on their creative process. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings responded to the backlash, saying the varying playback speeds are to gauge consumer interest. In other Netflix news, the company confirmed it has no plans to debut a game-streaming service, with Hastings saying Netflix is "really focused on doing incredible series and films and unscripted." The second episode of The Mandalorian has yet to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service, but already one of the show's central mysteries has been solved. Viewers were introduced to the Mandalorian in the series premiere, but at no point was his name uttered. Thus far, we've referred to him as the Mandalorian or Mando, for short. As it turns out, though, he doesn't go by Mando. Pedro Pascal, who plays the mysterious bounty hunter, revealed the Mandalorian's name in a behind-the-scenes interview. "The Mandalorian, whose name is Din Jarron, is your iconically cool, flawed, mysterious, loner gunslinger that harkens to the best of the samurai movies and the westerns."So there you have it, the Mandalorian's name is Din Jarron. Of course, there's no telling when that name will actually be spoken on the show or if we'll ever see Din Jarron's face.If the first episode is any indication, we will slowly learn more about Din Jarron's past before he became a Mandalorian bounty hunter. The premiere features very brief flashbacks to his childhood, in which it looked like he and his parents were in danger. What's more, he described himself as a former "foundling." While the meaning of that word hasn't been revealed, it's possible his parents did not survive the attack in the flashbacks, leading to him growing up an orphan.
