2019 may be winding down, but Pokemon Go developer Niantic is closing out the year with one final Community Day event. It's a big day for Wonder Woman 1984. The first trailer for the 2020 movie was revealed to the world, and it had a lot of Steve Trevor in it, who isn't looking very dead. During Comic-Con Experience Brazil, four character posters were unveiled.Director of the upcoming June 2020 movie Patty Jenkins helped kick off the event, but before we got to see the trailer, Jenkins gave us our first look at Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord. Check out all four of the images from CCXP below.Gal Gadot as Wonder WomanIn addition to Pascal as Lord--who is almost unrecognizable--images for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman--who has a new costume this time around--Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, and Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah were also debuted.Jenkins explained during the panel that most of the effects in the movie are practical; however, some of the moments with Wiig's character that needed a little bit of help. However, many of the stunts, locations, and more were practical effects.Sadly, not much more was revealed about one of the villains in the movie, Lord. Gadot and Jenkins both tip-toed around questions about Pascal's character during the event. But it's apparent from the first trailer he's a media personality who wants power and the means to get it--through some sort of magic crystal.Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on June 5, 2020.Info from Gamespot.com

DC and Warner Bros. have a couple of comic book movies coming out in 2020. The first is Birds Of Prey arriving on February 2, and the second is the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 debuting on June 5. During Comic-Con Experience in Brazil over the weekend, we finally got some more info about the movie, some new images of characters like Maxwell Lord, and a trailer--which we knew had been coming for a while.Aside from the new images that were revealed, the Wonder Woman panel featured Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins who briefly discussed making the movie and using practical effects. Then, Gadot and Jenkins unleashed the new trailer upon the world.Prior to the trailer, we knew Wonder Woman 1984 took place during the '80s, like the title suggests, and somehow, Steve Trevor plays a major part in the movie. It's crazy to actually see the character back in the movie, but what's the twist. Outside of the casting, very little info had been released to the public prior to this trailer. It's obvious that Trevor had jumped through time or something along those lines, as he's very confused about the trash can at the end of the trailer. Also, there were lots of shots inside a mall, and who doesn't love a 1980s mall sequence? New footage from the much-anticipated Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker will premiere inside of the battle royale game Fortnite later this month. Epic Games has announced that director JJ Abrams will showcase new footage of the sci-fi blockbuster at the in-game outdoor theatre Risky Reels on December 12. The footage will debut at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET that day.As for what to expect, Disney is promising an "exclusive scene" from Rise of Skywalker, but there are no further details available at this time. Epic added that Risky Reels opens its doors at 10:30 AM PT / 1:30 PM ET, so players can head in early to get a good seat. This confirmation comes after players discovered posters for the Rise of Skywalker reveal in Fortnite at various locations across the map. The new Rise of Skywalker footage will undoubtedly get posted to YouTube very quickly, so you don't necessarily need to play Fortnite to check out the new movie content. This is not the first partnership between Fortnite and Star Wars. In November, a massive Imperial starship appeared in the sky, and a Stormtrooper skin also came to the game.Abrams is working with Epic Games on a new video game called Spyjinx. Epic has said very little about the project, but the company says it is still in the works.Abrams also recently signed a $250 million deal to make new video games, TV shows, and movies for Warner Bros.Info from Gamespot.com

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is winding down, with Bethesda announcing that the game will no longer receive new content. In a post on the game's Reddit, Bethesda said that the additional content pack scheduled for 2019 will not release, and that development on all content going forward has ceased. This is not the end for The Elder Scrolls: Legends--it's still available to download and play, and the post promises continued support in the form of "monthly reward cards and regular in-game events." Ongoing maintenance is promised too, but don't expect new expansions. The most recent released expansion, Moons of Elsweyr, launched in June this year. All players who log in from now will receive a free card pack, The Tamriel Collection, which features "an assortment of new, three-attribute cards." The post also promises that the Asia-specific version of Legends currently in development is not affected by this news. There's no word on whether the planned Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions will ever release now, but it seems unlikely. We didn't review The Elder Scrolls: Legends, but it was generally well received, and the PC version has a score of 80 on Metacritic. Curiously, Bethesda has recently committed to releasing more mobile games like Legends. Their other major mobile titles as of right now are Fallout Shelter and The Elder Scrolls: Blades.Info from Gamespot.com

Twin Peaks VR is due to release this month, but until now we hadn't seen any footage from it. Now a trailer has emerged, showing off the Twin Peaks iconography and scenes from the series that fans will soon be able to explore in virtual reality. This is essentially an "escape room" game that will require you to puzzle your way through several situations from the show. The game appears to be heavily based on the enigmatic and wonderful 2017 third series rather than the first two seasons, and anyone who hasn't watched it should be wary of spoilers in the trailer below. The trailer begins in Glastonbury Grove, by the pool where Cooper enters the Red Room at the end of the second season, and gets weird from there. The trailer shows off the Red Room, complete with the chairs and statue, as well as Dougie Jones' waiting body. We also see the white horse from the original series and the Evolution of the Arm, and it seems like you'll be able to get uncomfortably close and personal with it.It also looks like the game will take you to the Fireman's theater room from episode 8 of the third season, as well as the sheriff's department, the box room in New York, and the traincart where Laura Palmer was murdered. The trailer promises that you can find Easter eggs, including posters of Bob and Laura's necklace in the woods,There are several moments from the trailer that match up exactly with the new series, including Naido being flung off into inter-dimensional space in the third episode and the Bob ball from the penultimate episode. It seems likely that the game will not fit within the canon of the Twin Peaks universe, and will instead be a way for fans to explore particular moments from the series. The game releases on Steam and the Oculus store this month, and according to Welcome to Twin Peaks, Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR versions will follow. Twin Peaks VR comes from Collider Games, in collaboration with Showtime and series director David Lynch.Info from Gamespot.com

HBO's Watchmen broke tradition with Episode 8, "A God Walks Into Abar," by including, for the first time in the series, a post-credits scene. Hopefully you stuck around for it--but if not, stop right here and go back to watch. We're going to dive deep into what it might mean and why it matters, so you're in for some spoilers, even if you finished the episode but shut your TV off early. Watchmen News HBO's Watchmen Episode 7: 6 New Theories HBO Watchmen: 15 Doctor Manhattan Clues You Missed HBO's Watchmen: 10 Easter Eggs And References From Episode 7 HBO's Watchmen: 13 Easter Eggs And References From Episode 6 To briefly recap, the scene actually starts as audio playing over the credits. It's a disgusting squishing noise that, we soon learn, is Veidt's post-trial "punishment." Each of the clones approaches a bound and prone Veidt and asks him "will you stay master?" When Veidt says no, the clone smashes a tomato (remember, they grow on trees here on Europa) in his face. From there, we abruptly cut to Veidt in a jail cell, reading Fogdancing--a fictional in-universe novel written by the fictional, in-universe author Max Shea, who also wrote the Tales Of The Black Freighter comic-within-the-comic of the Watchmen graphic novel. It's Veidt's birthday again, we learn, as the Game Warden brings him his traditional yellow-and-purple cake, topped with 7 candles."If you sing 'For He's A Jolly Good Fellow,' I'll vomit all over your boots," Veidt says. Thankfully, the Game Warden doesn't test this threat. Instead, he offers to bring Veidt a new book--but Veidt says he likes this one. Why? The Game Master "wouldn't understand," he says. "It's about loneliness."At this moment, the Game Master drops some interesting knowledge. He was actually the first Mr. Philips to be "born" on Europa, which we can assume is why he seems to have more power than the other Philips clones. Of course this only makes us wonder where the first Ms. Crookshanks ended up, or if she's even still around."Why is heaven not enough?" The Game Master asks, to which Veidt responds that this place isn't his home and that back on Earth "his children, all 8 million of them, [are] undoubtedly standing in their cribs crying out in desperation" for Veidt to return. Knowing what we know about how things are going on Earth, we can confidently say this isn't true--Earth may be going through some rough stuff, but aside from a few off-handed conversations, news clips, and Trieu's statue, no one on Earth seems all that interested in Veidt at all. He's been declared dead, and Elvis Lives-like conspiracies notwithstanding, that's about the extent of the thought he's been given. But of course, someone like Adrian Veidt would never be able to wrap his head around that reality. He's always, in his own estimation, been the single most important, qualified, intelligent, and capable person on the planet. He also reveals here that it's not necessarily the superiority that's most important to him, it's his own usefulness: "Heaven isn't enough because they don't need me."That's when something very strange happens. As the music swells, Veidt realizes there's a horseshoe baked into his cake. He gleefully pulls it out, tears his cot away from the wall, and begins scraping away at the floorboards while cackling delightedly. If you remember all the way back to Episode 1, you'll recall Philips and Crookshanks presenting him with a horseshoe rather than a knife during his first birthday party. At the time, it seemed like a bizarre glitch in their "programming," like they couldn't tell the difference between a cake knife and a horseshoe. But this moment recontextualizes that entirely. Is it possible that Philips and Crookshanks have, somehow, been working toward Veidt's plan all along and that first horseshoe was just a minor hiccup in his timeline? Did Jon somehow pass his own deterministic experience of the world--the idea that everything that has happened and will happen is already laid out and predetermined--on to the people he made? Or is it all just a simple case of one loyal clone--the prosecutor who winked at Veidt after her closing arguments, maybe--being in on the scheme and baking a cake with a hidden key in it under all the other clones' noses like an old timey prison break?Either way, the fact remains, Veidt's plan is proceeding in a way that he's clearly extremely happy about. And though we can't tell if he's planning on pulling some sort of Shawshank Redemption tunnel gambit or if he's planted some kind of weapon or escape tool under the floor of his jail cell, we're pretty sure it'll all be cleared up once and for all next week during the finale.Watchmen airs Sundays on HBO. In preparation for The Game Awards later this week, host Geoff Keighley has hosted a Reddit AMA about the show and what viewers can expect. While most questions were fairly straightforward, one prompted a longer response from Keighley: "do you feel that it's a conflict of interest that you're the producer of the event and in one of the games nominated for a good number of awards?"This question is in reference to Death Stranding, the new game from Hideo Kojima's studio, Kojima Productions. Keighley has discussed his friendship with Kojima on numerous occasions, and appears in Death Stranding as one of several celebrity cameos. In his response, Keighley promises that there is no conflict of interest to speak of, and gets into the specifics of the voting process."More than anything, the integrity of the show and the awards is the most important thing of all," Keighley says. "I don’t vote on the nominees or winners--that’s done by a jury of 80 global media outlets that we list on the website. That process isn’t the result of me having a cameo in a game, but also because I work with developers on world premieres, announcements, sponsorships, and other aspects of the show. I want the jury to be 'blind' to all those other aspects."He notes that while he is friends with several people within the industry, there are others who also hold him personally responsible when their games don't win. "If I’m being honest it can sometimes be pretty lonely trying to keep everyone happy," he says. "But I just have to stay true to the rules and voting and hope that, if I want to build something that stands the test of time, I act as ethically and fairly as I can."Keighley notes that his appearance in Death Stranding was recorded in 2017, for a promotional piece that was not used, and Kojima later asked if the motion capture could be used in-game. He did not do the voice acting for his character--that was performed by Matt Mercer. "I certainly get the concern," he concedes. "As producer of the show I'm inevitably going to have relationships with people in the industry. That's what allows me to do the show in the first place. The producers of the Oscars, for instance, are often (or almost always) people who produce movies. I don't make games, don't invest in games or own game stock. All I can do is be transparent about those relationships and make sure the voting is separate."The Game Awards airs December 12 at 8:30 PM ET. You can still vote for your favorite games to win before the show.Info from Gamespot.com

Nintendo's Japanese designer recruitment site has shared some interesting concept art and insight into how the trailer to the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel came together. The site, spotted by VGC, explains Nintendo's expectations from designers and artists, showing off some of the work that has gone into their most popular recent games and characters. It's not just valuable for potential designers, though, as the page also features some great concept art.The page includes some concept art for Isabelle, the mayor's assistant from Animal Crossing: New Leaf who proved so popular that she became a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It shows several iterations the character went through before her look was settled on. It says that they wanted a character who as many people as possible would grow attached to.There are also various pieces of Splatoon 2 stage and character design throughout the page, showing off the different models and the colorful designs of the game's levels. There's no major revelations here, but it's interesting how the stage art captures the general vibe of the game well.Much of the page is focused on the work that went into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, including the reveal of the game's sequel. The first image below shows how a mix of motion capture and Maya software was used to map Link's movements in the trailer, which is embedded above. It's a small but welcome insight into the process involved. The other images from the original Breath of the Wild below are a mix of storyboards for the game's iconic opening scene of Link running to the clifftop and environmental design examples. The Breath of the Wild sequel is happening because Nintendo had too many ideas for DLC. A release date has not been announced, but it will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch.Info from Gamespot.com

A whole lot happened in 2019. The year saw some major games finally come to fruition, like the long-awaited Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, as well as some forward motion in new services like Xbox Game Pass and Google Stadia. But looming over most of 2019 was something even larger: 2020. This year was full of forward-looking developments in gaming, setting up a year that has the potential to be littered with major moments and sweeping changes to the industry's landscape.Of course, there are major games on the horizon, like The Last Of Us Part II or Cyberpunk 2077. More than that, though, are the moves developers, publishers, and major tech companies are making that could recontextualize the entire industry. New hardware is set to bring another technical leap forward in the console games we play. Major players are getting in on streaming and subscription services. Long-dormant franchises could see resurgences. And more and more companies are looking at new business models for their games--and trying to save games they've already released from rocky starts. We got our first look at what 2020 holds throughout 2019, and there's a lot that could bring major changes to the gaming industry in the very near future. Here's a rundown of everything that turned 2019 into the Year of 2020.Next-Gen Consoles Are ComingNothing has quite an impact on the gaming landscape as new console hardware, and in 2019, we started getting details about what Sony and Microsoft have planned for the next console generation. Both the PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox, codenamed "Project Scarlett," are slated for release in 2020 during the holiday season, which means the current console generation is quickly coming to an end. And that means we'll soon start to see a crop of games that show off the capabilities of the new hardware. Both consoles will feature solid-state drives for storage, as opposed to the current hard disk standard, although neither has a price point yet. The PS5 is confirmed to include a disc drive and to support 4K Blu-ray discs, while reports on Microsoft's new Xbox suggest it has two versions, one of which may focus on streaming and forego a disc drive altogether, like the Xbox One S All-Digital. The PS5 is also confirmed to support backward compatibility with PS4 games and PlayStation VR. Scarlett looks slated for release during the 2020 holiday season, while the PS5 is confirmed to hit shelves in Holiday 2020.We're sure to get more information about the future of PS5 and Project Scarlett throughout 2020, as well as some of the games that'll show up on them. The big question is what the new hardware will allow developers to do with their games that they couldn't before--something we're sure to see in the coming months. The Year Of Streaming And SubscriptionsApart from new Xbox hardware, Microsoft is making another big move in gaming in the form of its xCloud streaming technology. The service looks to make console-quality games playable on a variety of hardware, including on on PCs and Macs through their internet browsers and mobile devices, through online streaming. Given the robust library of Microsoft's Game Pass offerings, which make all first-party games and a variety of other titles available to subscribers on Xbox One and PC for a monthly fee, xCloud could be a formidable entrant into the widening field of streaming services--especially since Microsoft is packaging it with Xbox Game Pass in 2020.Google also recently launched its Stadia streaming service, which offers a lot of the same capabilities as what Microsoft is bringing with xCloud. While the service launched in 2019, Stadia saw something of a rocky launch, with a small library of games and a thin install base that made multiplayer games tough to enjoy. But while it might have struggled at launch, Google has invested in Stadia with a new studio headed up by Motive Studios and Ubisoft Toronto founder Jade Raymond. It seems likely we'll see Google continue to push Stadia's offerings and shore up its capabilities. With Microsoft mounting a streaming service and a heavy hitter like Google now on the gaming stage, it seems likely we'll see an uptick of emphasis on streaming from other players as well. Sony's PS Now service has existed for quite a while, though the publisher doesn't release first-party games on the service at launch. Sony recently dropped its price in a move that seems aimed to keep it competitive with Microsoft and Google's offerings. Ubisoft also recently announced a PC subscription service for its game catalog, called Uplay Plus, and there's Electronic Arts' Access subscriptions--EA Access on console and Origin Access on PC. We've also got the newly launched Apple Arcade service, a subscription for mobile games that works on iPhones, Macs, and Apple TV, and services such as Nvidia's GeForce Now, which lets you stream PC games you've purchased on various devices, including PCs, Macs, and Nvidia Shield.Though the new consoles' support for disc drives suggests we won't see the elimination of physical media in the next generation, 2020 looks to be a year in which many of us will have the option to get our games primarily through subscriptions, rather than buying discs or even digital purchases. At Long Last: More Half-LifePossibly the least-expected announcement of 2019 came from Valve: 2020 will see a new entry in the beloved Half-Life franchise. It also wasn't the game anyone expected. Valve isn't bringing a traditional Half-Life game to PC, in which you play as series protagonist Gordon Freeman. Instead, the next title will be Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality game that puts you in the shoes of Half-Life 2 character Alyx Vance.Valve's also not advancing the story beyond where it left it with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 way back in 2007. Instead, Half-Life: Alyx takes place between the first two Half-Life games and looks like it'll focus on Alyx's relationship with her father, Eli Vance. Half-Life: Alyx will work with any VR platform that's compatible with SteamVR--meaning HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Windows Mixed Media, and Valve's VR setup, Valve Index. There's not a ton of other information about the game just yet apart from Valve's announcement trailer. But if you've got VR equipment, we do know when you can play it: March 2020. Half-Life: Alyx News Half-Life: Alyx Trailer Breakdown: Everything We've Discovered Half-Life: Alyx - Everything Valve Announced Today Pre-Order Half-Life: Alyx And Receive A Discount Half-Life: Alyx - What We Know About Valve's New VR Half-Life Game Half-Life: Alyx Officially Announced Blizzard's ResurgenceBlizzCon 2019 was a huge one for the developer, full of announcements. Three of its franchises are seeing major continuations in the future (to say nothing of new content coming to Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm), and while we're not sure if they'll all come out in 2020, it's very possible we'll see some new Blizzard games in the coming year. After seven years since the release of Diablo 3, Blizzard dropped the bomb of Diablo 4 at the convention, showing off not just a new trailer for the game but a playable slice of the game. It makes some big changes to the franchise, taking some influences from live games. Instead of just playing cooperatively with other players in your party, Diablo 4's overworld is public, throwing you in with other players to meet, work with, or ignore, and adding elements like world bosses and public events to take part in as you explore.Blizzard also announced a sequel to its multiplayer hero shooter, Overwatch. Up to now, Overwatch has largely been a competitive multiplayer experience, with its broader story relegated to supplementary material like trailers and videos. Overwatch 2 will feature a story campaign and single-player activities, as well as cooperative missions--expanding on the story side of Overwatch and giving you new options to play. But the competitive part is still a huge part of the game, and Blizzard intends to avoid fracturing the current Overwatch community by making Overwatch and Overwatch 2 competitive gameplay compatible with each other. All new characters and maps will also be available in both games, so even if you choose not to buy Overwatch 2, you'll still be able to keep playing the game as you know it.The third of the big announcements is a new expansion for World of Warcraft. Shadowlands expands on Blizzard's 15-year-old MMO by taking players into Azeroth's afterlife, opening up a whole new area to explore, as well as expanding on lore that Blizzard has never really explored before. The expansion is also putting a big emphasis on player choice, allowing you to choose from a variety of factions to join in the Shadowlands, and providing specific endgame story campaigns based on your choices. We don't know when exactly Blizzard will release any of those titles--and with Blizzard, it might be a while. A big showing at BlizzCon was welcome for the company, which was facing still-lingering controversy over its ruling against a Hearthstone player who expressed support for the Hong Kong protests. But BlizzCon 2019 set up the possibility for continuations of Blizzard's major franchises in 2020, and even if those games aren't actually playable next year, they're sure to be on a lot of minds. BlizzCon News BlizzCon 2019 News: Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, And Everything Else Announced New Hero Confirmed For Overwatch 2: Sojourn BlizzCon Schedule: Overwatch 2, Diablo 4 Unveiling, And More Overwatch 2 Announced, Includes PvP And PvE What Overwatch 2 Means For Current Players Diablo 4 Announced At BlizzCon 2019 Diablo 4 Gameplay Trailer Shows The New RPG In Action New WoW Shadowlands Expansion Trailer Released At BlizzCon 2019 Hearthstone Expansion "Descent of Dragons" Announced, Coming In December Here's Every Hearthstone "Descent Of Dragons" Card (So Far) More Long-Awaited ReleasesWhile we haven't been waiting for them as long as we have for a new Half-Life game, there are a few other well-loved franchises finally getting their sequels (and remakes) in 2020. Square Enix is releasing the first episode of its Final Fantasy VII Remake in March, bringing the game back to the fore after 22 years. The first part of the remake covers the portion of Final Fantasy VII that takes place in Midgar, but we're still not sure how many episodes the game will span, how long it'll be in total, or when it'll all be released. The Last of Us Part II is finally poised for release in 2020 as well. The second part of Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic action-adventure game returns to the story of Joel and Ellie, but this time, Ellie is the player character throughout the game. Ellie has become a capable warrior in the years since The Last of Us, and she embarks on a revenge quest after a vicious attack on her friend and love interest Dina. We know she'll also work with other characters, including Joel, and that the game will be as bleak and story-focused as its predecessor. We're also about to see the wait for CD Projekt Red's follow-up to The Witcher franchise, Cyberpunk 2077, come to an end. CD Projekt revealed a bunch of new details about the upcoming action-RPG in 2019, including the addition of actor Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, a major character in the franchise. Cyberpunk 2077 looks to be about as expansive and detailed as The Witcher games, as players have come to expect, with plenty of options that let you alter your path through the game based on your choices, how you build your character, how you interact with the people you meet in the game, and how you approach its various combat encounters.Microsoft is set to continue the Halo franchise in 2020 as well, with Halo: Infinite, just in time for the launch of Project Scarlett.
