Sony's final State of Play of the year was full of announcements and new game reveals, one of which was a release date for Predator: Hunting Grounds, which is coming to PlayStation 4 and PC on April 24, 2020.The competitive asymmetric multiplayer game is being developed by IIlfonic, the studio that brought us 2017's Friday The 13th. Both games adopt a similar structure, pitting one player who assumes the role of a movie franchise's killing machine against a team of significantly less cool humans. Predator: Hunting Grounds is a bit more like Evolve, though, as the squad of four humans are still armed-to-the-teeth soldiers as opposed to hapless camp-going teenagers.The release date trailer reveals that there's some customisation involved when it comes to playing as the Predator, as you can choose between three distinct classes and numerous armor styles. The Hunter class, for example, is a versatile style with a balanced weapon choice. The Berserker, on the other hand, has extra power and health, while the Scout comes with increased speed and stamina.One of these classes is a female Predator, which project lead and game designer, Jared Gerritzen, has been eager to share. "One of the secrets we have been keeping since announcing Predator: Hunting Grounds has been the inclusion of the female Predator," Gerritzen said on the PlayStation Blog."When we first came up with what this game would be, I knew we had to create a world where this ultimate female warrior would exist too. We had fun imagining her backstory which helped us create a fierce warrior that any gamer will have fun playing. She is agile, fast, and relentless. She is a huntress without fear and she thrives in the hunt. In the trailer we see her with a weapon that IllFonic created, the Yautja Bow. This is no ordinary bow, it deals massive damage to its prey and will pin the enemy to walls and other structures at death. She has access to the entire Predator arsenal as well."That arsenal is showcased in the trailer, which features plenty of new and iconic movie weaponry. As the Predator, you'll be able to wield weapons such as the shoulder-mounted plasma caster, wrist blades, the Combistick spear, Smart Disc, and the aforementioned Yautja Bow, with the signature triangular aiming reticle featuring prominently.The female Predator comes armed with the devastating Yautja Bow.The Predator also gets to collect its trophies, with the trailer featuring some Mortal Kombat-esque executions as the relentless alien killer rips out skull and spine from its human victims. So far there's no indication for how the soldiers intend to fight back against such a ruthless foe, other than by shooting at it with guns.Those who pre-order Predator: Hunting Grounds will get bonus in-game items at launch inspired by the original movie. The '87 Predator Skin lets you play as the Predator from the original film, and Fireteam players also get early access to the powerful "Ole Painless" mini-gun. Meanwhile, the Digital Deluxe Edition on PlayStation Store comes with exclusive in-game items like PlayStation-themed Predator and Fireteam skins, and a digital copy of the 120-page Predator: Hunters by Dark Horse Comics. As leaked last week, indie charmer Untitled Goose Game is coming to Xbox One. To name a few, we've had PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout, and even Battlefield V's Firestorm, so who thought we needed another one? Respawn Entertainment, apparently--and it was right.The developer of the highly-regarded Titanfall series took its strong gameplay foundation and put its own spin on the battle royale formula for Apex Legends. By streamlining many of the genre's core mechanics, masterfully weaving in hero-shooter elements, and introducing systems that make it hard to go back to other battle royales (or shooters for that matter), the genre is the best it's ever been with Apex Legends.It's in the little things, like how the game has encouraged teamwork and communication. Take the ping system for example--with one button, you can mark targets, key locations, specific items, or other events happening in a match. Callouts are all context-sensitive and the game is smart enough to recognize what's what. Character voice lines are also tied to the callouts, doubling as visual and audio cues. Even something as simple as knowing who's getting shot at can help the team quickly shift focus in a moment's notice. It's easy to contribute to victory whether or not you're playing with friends or have a microphone to speak.And the clunky inventory management of other games? Gone. Apex is, again, smart enough to know which gear and attachments you actually want by accounting for its item-tier system and instantly equipping loot accordingly. You still have full control over what you loot if you want, but you're no longer forced to micromanage the game's systems. These quality-of-life improvements in Apex allow you to better focus on getting back to the best part of the game: the high-stakes firefights.Everything around the edges is significant for Apex Legends as a whole, because its combat is much more fast-paced than anything else in the battle royale space. It's less about hiding in desolate buildings, the element of surprise, or the unnerving tension of enemies approaching. The brisk pace of matches is supported by traversal mechanics like speedy sliding, ziplines, redeployment pads, and a number of legend-specific abilities that let you move around the arena in clever ways. And with pitch-perfect gunplay, combat is no longer something to dread, but rather the thing you're eager to find.That fast pace extends to how Apex moves between matches, so even when you're down on your luck, you can quickly pick yourself back up--though sticking around after getting knocked out may be best. Apex incorporated a risk/reward setup for respawning teammates and bringing them back into the fight; this can shift the dynamic of matches, but it keeps players invested even if you think it's over for yourself.It's as if Respawn thought of every issue battle royale games have and created a proper solution for them in Apex Legends.The game enjoyed a strong launch in February, showing just how innovative Respawn can be in what seemed like a genre that had already run its course. However, expectations as an evolving game meant that if Apex Legends were to leave a lasting impact, it would need continual support with new content and consistent updates. Although its initial Season 1 battle pass left a lot to be desired, Respawn seemed quick to learn and bounce back with subsequent updates, namely Season 3: Meltdown. Along with a revamped battle pass, a slew of extra cosmetics to earn, and a new legend, we received an entirely new map called World's Edge. Not only did it provide fresh and varied scenery, it encouraged different styles of play with bigger fields, increased verticality in city-centers, and map-based elements like the running train and vaults. The first map, King's Canyon, was good, though World's Edge provided a welcome jolt of excitement.Even with all the streamlined mechanics, solid gameplay feel, and strong updates, Apex Legends really revolves around its characters. It's clear that hero shooters, such as Overwatch, have been a major influence, but Apex has made the dynamic roster its own. You see it in the diversity of its characters' backgrounds--shown subtly in their designs and bits of lore--who've been made in earnest, exuding charisma across the board. And since its launch, updates to Apex have brought us three additional legends: Octane, Wattson, and Crypto.It's as if Respawn thought of every issue battle royale games have and created a proper solution for them in Apex Legends.What's just as important is that the whole cast brings something worthy to the table when it comes to gameplay. Each legend has their own unique sets of abilities that can turn the tide of battle in the right situations, and allows for tactical creativity. The fact that no legend feels outright superior to another is also a testament to Respawn's ability to balance the game properly. Sure, some weapons have had their time to shine (like the Charge Rifle and Peacekeeper), and the competitive space will gravitate toward optimal squad composition, but each character always has their place with opportunities to excel and contribute to the team.Apex Legends was one of those games we kept coming back to throughout the year, whether it was to dig into new updates or just enjoy the thrill of claiming to be champions. While it certainly is exactly that, Capcom did more than recapture the spirit of its original; it set a precedent for the series’ reinvention, and created a new standard for all video game remakes to follow. After 23 years, and nearly 20-some installments, the Resident Evil 2 remake is the most refined version of what the franchise and genre has always aspired to be.As remakes and remasters become more frequent, the line between recreating the experience we remember, versus the one we had, becomes a tricky to walk. When I think back on the first time I played Resident Evil 2 in 1998, I think about what it was like to slip past the clutches of the undead as my heart pounded from anxiety; the adrenaline rush of facing a Licker for the first time with only a few bullets to spare; or the lament of having to maneuver the halls of a sprawling claustrophobic police station without knowing what terrors await. What I don’t think about too much are the game’s notorious tank controls; the cardboard delivery of the dialogue; or its fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds. These things all have nostalgic value, and are undoubtedly a part of Resident Evil 2's original DNA, but they aren’t the defining characteristics of what made that initial experience so impactful.In 2019’s Resident Evil 2, Capcom managed to recapture the anxiety and harrowing feeling of encountering a bumbling flesh-eating zombie for the first time, and reintroduce that sense panic-inducing terror, despite having zombie culture shoved down our throats for the past several decades.Around every corner, there’s a foreboding atmosphere of never being safe. And yet, even when faced with terrifying odds, there’s still the chance that you might be able to fight your way through. Over the past few years, horror games have focused on stripping everything away, honing in on the thrill of the scare, and forcing you to run for your life rather than fight for it. Resident Evil 2, however, strikes the balance of making you feel helpless while still letting you have a grasp on your wits, by arming you with a small arsenal of weapons, but never enough to make you feel unstoppable.Resident Evil 2 also features the welcome return to puzzles. This is something Resident Evil 7 reintroduced in modest amounts, but RE2 leans into it; and with that return, comes the series’ signature exploration and backtracking of its environments. Again, something RE7 reintegrated, but on a smaller scale in comparison to previous installments.On all accounts, the Resident Evil 2 remake is more than a throwback: it’s among the best games in the series. It makes the original hard to go back to--a conflicting feeling for me as a person who was shaped, scared, and inspired by the original Resident Evil 2. It's a game that was pivotal in forming my tastes and outlook on games as a medium.However, when I go back and play the original 1998 Resident Evil 2 today, the nostalgia is there, but the feelings of fear and triumph are gone. Destiny 2's Season of Dawn officially begins today. While server maintenance is ongoing at the time of this writing, the new 2.7.0 update that includes Season of Dawn has been released, and Bungie has shared the full patch notes for what to expect on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. Here's a quick look at some of the highlights, and be sure to also check out our A Matter of Time quest guide; that's how you'll unlock both the new Sundial activity and Season of Dawn's artifact, which you'll want to get right away.Many of the adjustments have been previewed already--Bungie has made some notable changes to Hunter, Warlock, and Titan subclasses, specifically those of the Solar variety. There are also weapon tweaks, including those to a variety of Exotics and weapon archetypes. On the latter front, linear fusion rifles get a 20% boost to precision damage (except for Sleeper Simulant) and improved target acquisition at close and medium ranges. Sidearms also get improved target acquisition at all ranges. Armor has also seen some adjustments, both to specific Exotics and to remove restrictions on "many" mods.The Power cap has increased, with the Powerful cap moving from 950 to 960 and Pinnacle from 960 to 970. There are also some tweaks to the new artifact to smooth out the leveling curve. Meanwhile, the Gunsmith now has repeatable bounties, and his Field Calibration bounty no longer requires you to play certain activities.As previously announced, Exotic engrams and Fated engrams are now a single item, and these will always decrypt to an Exotic you don't own--assuming you have any to still collect. They are class-specific, as before, but this is a notable change that should make Exotic engrams more rewarding (and collecting Exotics less frustrating). The final trailer for the upcoming horror movie Antlers has been released. The movie is produced by Guillermo Del Toro and is based on the legend of the Wendigo, the mythical man-eating beast that roams the woods of the Pacific Northwest.The previous Antlers trailer that was released in October was hugely atmospheric, but didn't exactly give us many plot details. This latest promo is still very spooky but also reveals more of the storyline. Local people are getting picked up by something big and scary, and a young boy knows exactly what it is--and where it's living. Keri Russell (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) plays the boy's mom, while Jesse Plemons (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story) is the local sheriff trying to solve the mystery. The loot-driven action RPG Dauntless will soon be available to take with you wherever you want. During Nintendo's last indie showcase of the year, Nick Clifford of Phoenix Labs appeared to announce that the free-to-play game is heading to Nintendo Switch extremely soon--as in, later today.The announcement was paired with a few extra details on some events and items. The game's next expansion is Stormchasers, and will be coming to Switch as well, naturally. The studio also announced that Switch will get some exclusive and free cosmetic items: Sky Fighter armor and a Sky Metal weapon set.Dauntless is a free-to-play game that often draws comparisons to the Monster Hunter series--essentially, you hunt down fantastical beasts for their pelts and then make wicked armor out of it. It has a different visual style than Monster Hunter, and as a live game its events work a little differently. It officially launched on consoles this year after a lengthy beta period on PC."Dauntless is clearly an experience that has been optimized to deliver the most stress-free multiplayer session possible," Ginny Woo said in GameSpot's Dauntless review. During the recent Nintendo Indie World Showcase, it was announced that the mind-bending narrative puzzle game, The Talos Principle, is coming to the Nintendo Switch later today. First released in 2014, the game puts players in the role of an android who has human-like sentience. While exploring a labyrinth full of different puzzles and other oddities, the protagonist will learn more about the mounting struggles as it comes to grips with its curiosity about life.Given its balance of focusing on puzzle-solving and storytelling, The Talos Principle is a solid pick for the Switch library. It's very much an intimate experience, and with the Switch's portability and accessibility, it makes it seem like diving into a good book. This release will be the complete edition of The Talos Principle, which includes the DLC Road to Gehenna, which acts as a sort of epilogue to the main story.In GameSpot's review of The Talos Principle, former editor Jeremy Signor stated: "The Talos Principle is an absolute joy to play, packed to the gills with expertly designed puzzles and enough ancillary content to make any history of philosophy buff salivate. During the latest Indie World Showcase, Nintendo announced that Axiom Verge is getting a sequel. Axiom Verge 2 is scheduled to release sometime in Fall 2020.The announcement only confirmed Axiom Verge 2 would be releasing for Nintendo Switch, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the game won't release on several of the same platforms as its predecessor--such as PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It's probably unlikely Axiom Verge 2 will release on PS Vita and Wii U, the other two systems that saw releases of the first game.Axiom Verge is a side-scroller metroidvania that also takes gameplay inspiration from games like Contra, Blaster Master, and Bionic Commando. The game was entirely developed by Tom Happ, who also did the art and music for the game--an undertaking we've learned can be emotionally and mentally taxing. Nintendo's announcement did not reveal whether Happ is the sole developer behind Axiom Verge 2 as well.In GameSpot's Axiom Verge review, Peter Brown wrote, "Axiom Verge is a game that's easy to fall in love with because it hits so many high notes. It's official: Capcom is releasing a remake of Resident Evil 3 next year. Sony confirmed the news during today's State of Play stream, where it unveiled the first footage of the rumored remake and announced its release date: April 3, 2020.The announcement trailer, which you can watch below, gives us our first glimpse at this reimagined version of the classic horror game. The video showcases protagonist Jill Valentine's new look as she runs through a burning building from antagonist Nemesis. Much like this year's critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2, the Resident Evil 3 remake forgoes the fixed camera angles of the original for a third-person, over-the-shoulder viewpoint.Following the reveal, Capcom released a second Resident Evil 3 remake trailer, this one featuring commentary from producers Masachika Kawata and Peter Fabiano. The Sundial is the major new activity in Destiny 2's newly launched Season of Dawn. Much like the Vex Offensive, Bungie expects you to spend the next few months with this replayable activity to grind out new weapons and rewards. But before you can do so, you'll need to make your way through a quest--A Matter of Time--in order to gain access. Overwatch has rung in the holiday season with its annual Winter Wonderland event on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The event will run from December 10 through January 2, and includes a new game mode, new cosmetics and skins, and weekly challenges.The new mode is a mini-game dubbed "Snowball Deathmatch." It's an eight-player free-for-all where everyone plays as Mei with a snowball gun, but there's a twist. Mei gets a new "Catch" ability allowing her to catch enemy snowballs and add it to her own ammo count. The first player to score 15 eliminations wins.The event will also feature seven new skins--four Legendary that can be opened in loot boxes, and three Epic that can be earned through weekly challenges. The kiosk rental service Redbox is no longer renting video games, and will cease sales of used games at the end of the year. The company announced that it is "permanently transitioning out of the games business" and will now exclusively rent movies.The company confirmed the move on Twitter after Reddit users noticed their local kiosks were no longer offering game rentals. In a statement to The Verge, the company said you'll be able to buy games through the kiosks through the end of the year. That effectively ends physical game rentals for many users, since other businesses like Blockbuster have largely closed their doors.Like Redbox's movie service, it rented games for a daily rate and allowed users to keep games for as long as they wanted. This meant that if you could speed through quickly enough, it was an inexpensive way to try a lot of games.Purchases through physical kiosk locations is only available through the end of the year, but online purchases appear to be available through early 2020. Resident Evil 3 is real. After a bout of rumors and leaks, the Resident Evil 3 remake was officially announced during Sony's final State of Play presentation of 2019. Since the leak occurred prior to The Game Awards, some speculated that an official announcement would be coming then.Instead, Resident Evil 3 was announced during Sony's State of Play presentation on December 10, 2019. Despite the rumors, it was a bit of a surprise reveal--the announcer introduced the trailer as the "unannounced campaign portion of Capcom's Project Resistance." Project Resistance is Capcom's 1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror unveiled at Tokyo Game Show 2019, but with no ties to Resident Evil 3 at the time. Well, surprise--Resistance is coming packaged with RE3.The Resident Evil 3 reveal trailer gave us an intense first-person POV sequence of a character fleeing from the series' iconic tyrant, Nemesis. That character was eventually revealed to be Jill Valentine, one of the last remaining S.T.A.R.S. members still in Raccoon City during the deadly zombie outbreak, which players last experienced in the Resident Evil 2 remake. (Despite the brief first-person part of the trailer, Resident Evil 3 will continue in the vein of the Resident Evil 2 remake with its over-the-shoulder third-person action.)Resident Evil fans may also be pleased (or not) to see some returning characters from the original RE3: Nemesis in the rest of the trailer. See Resident Evil 3 at Best Buy Multiplayer (Resident Evil Resistance)Resident Evil 3 will have a multiplayer mode, which (as it turns out) is actually Resident Evil Resistance, the 1v4 asymmetric multiplayer game revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2019. Capcom originally lead fans to believe Project Resistance was a standalone Resident Evil spin-off, but it will come with Resident Evil 3.In the RE3 reveal, its producers refer to Resident Evil Resistance as "an asymmetrical battle between 4 survivors and 1 mastermind," where the mastermind can control creatures and set traps and the survivors must try to escape.Story and CharactersAccording to the producers, Resident Evil 3 "leans more towards action" compared to the Resident Evil 2 remake. It's set right before and then eventually simultaneous to the events of Resident Evil 2. You control Jill Valentine, one of the last remaining members of S.T.A.R.S. still in Raccoon City. S.T.A.R.S. is a specialized branch of the Raccoon City Police Department which received quite the shake-up during the events of the first Resident Evil game (both the original and the remake)--after the Mansion incident, Jill stayed behind in Raccoon City to continue investigating Umbrella. Not only does she get caught in the middle of the t-Virus outbreak, but she will also be pursued by RE3's iconic Nemesis tyrant, designed especially to eliminate the remaining S.T.A.R.S. officers before they can whistleblow on Umbrella's activities.Mr. X was perhaps one of the most popular elements from the Resident Evil 2 remake (he was in the original game too, but only the "B" scenario) and it turns out Capcom probably has some more surprises in store for us with Nemesis too. According to RE3's producers, Nemesis will have "more ways than Tyrant from Resident Evil 2 to track down his target Jill Valentine." Nemesis is definitely an entirely different beast than Mr. X, but considering some of the liberties Capcom has taken with these remakes/reboots, who knows what new horrors they're referring to?Other returning characters, based on the reveal trailer, include Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service mercenaries Carlos Oliveira, Mikhail Viktor, and Nikolai Zinoviev, though only Carlos was pointed out by name in a video by the producers following the initial reveal.
