In our exclusive talk with Xbox boss Phil Spencer, we learned a great deal about just how powerful the next-gen Xbox Series X will be: a GPU eight-times faster than the base Xbox One and twice that of the Xbox One X, a CPU said to be four times more capable, and an ultra-fast NVMe solid-state drive. Well, aside from the SSD which is virtually silent, you might be wondering about how the Series X will handle all that power while staying cool and quiet. In general terms, Spencer described the console's cooling system, saying, "What the team did, and you [see] it through the top grate, is we went with one central fan in the design." He continued, "What this design does, with the size of the fan that we built around, is it lets us match how quiet the Xbox One X is with all that power inside of the box."It's not as simple as deciding on a type of cooling system and running with it, of course, as Spencer explained, "There's always this tension between design, acoustics, cooling, and the function of the console, and we were not going to compromise on function. I'm just incredibly impressed with the design that they [came up with]."Spencer went on to describe how he's been using a Series X at home and that its acoustic profile helps it keep a low profile even for people who have seen it in action. He claimed, "If I don't point it out, it just sits there and plays video games the way I want it to and I never hear it, just like how I don't hear my [Xbox One] X."The Series X sports a natural, PC tower-like design, which was accounted for in its cooling system, but also the fact that you can set it horizontally or vertically. Microsoft wouldn't get into the specifics of dimensions and hard technical details of the cooling system, but Spencer asserts that the single fan is "able to spin at a low enough rate that it is whisper-quiet." He also said that the Series X has "no secondary fans, probably just passive coil" to keep temperatures in check. When you take a look at the Series X itself, you see that the single central fan gets a bit fancy. "We did do a nod with our Xbox; it has a green tint and it's a concave design so as you come up [to it]." Considering that one of the goals with the Series X is to sort of unify the Xbox brand and ecosystem, we suppose it seeps into all aspects of its design. Spencer goes into a bit more detail as to what that means in our story about why the console was named Series X. And for all the details we gathered in our exclusive coverage, be sure to read our in-depth feature on the Xbox Series X. Coming from Crema and Humble Bundle, the creature-collecting adventure game Temtem pulls a lot of influences from Nintendo's immensely popular Pokemon series. Still, it injects an online twist to give it its own flair As a massively-multiplayer online game, you'll start in a setting known as the Airborne Archipelago, a collection of six floating islands with different terrain and wildlife, and embark on an adventure with other explorers to catch magical creatures known as temtem. In this exclusive new trailer, we get to see the three starter temtem that you can choose from, who can eventually grow into formidable members of your roster. After creating your custom protagonist, who you can deck out with new costumes and accessories, you get to pick your starting temtem to accompany you on your journey. In the new trailer, we get a solid rundown of each of the three starters, which detail their strengths and weaknesses. Here's a brief explainer on each one:Crystle: A lizard temtem that can conjure up crystal spikes to attack its enemies. Many of its abilities are defensive in-nature allowing it to absorb blows and dish them out in kind.Smazee: A monkey-like temtem that specializes in using melee-strikes and offensive abilities. Smazee is the fastest starter choice, and it can quickly dish-out strikes against its foes.Houchic: A fairy-like temtem that uses psychic attacks and mind-based abilities to confuse and weakens its foes. Houchic can use its psychic attacks to pierce through enemy defenses. After picking a starting temtem, your protagonist--a temtem tamer in training--will be able to explore the six islands of the archipelago. Throughout your journey, you'll come to blows with Clan Belsoto, who are seeking to control the six islands for themselves. While exploring, you'll be able to battle other tamers, level up your party, and capture new temtem to expand your roster. All this sounds very familiar when thinking of the Pokemon series, but what makes Temtem stand on its own is that it all takes place within an online world where other players will be making a go of it on their journey. In addition to battling NPC characters, you'll also be able to test your skills against other players online. But if you want to stick with the story, then you can still play through the game solo, or even with a friend and go through the entire campaign cooperatively. As of this time, Temtem is planned for a PC release on Steam on January 21, but according to developer Crema, they're looking into releasing the game on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch at a later period. During the early access period, the developers will continue adding new content after launch.Info from Gamespot.com

2020 is almost here, so we've asked GameSpot's staff to share which games they're looking forward to most in the new year. New consoles are going to dominate the headlines, but at the end of the day it's all about the games, and there are a ton of exciting ones to look forward to. When you're done reading this entry, follow along with all of our other end-of-the-year coverage collected in our Best of 2019 hub and our Most Anticipated of 2020 hub.A lot has changed for me since 2017, a year where I was still navigating a new job in a new city and establishing a foothold in a career I never thought I'd have. It was an intimidating time as I was just getting off of square one, rebuilding my own real life social links, too. And alongside me was Persona 5. I found so much comfort in the daily routine of the game, spending time with characters I grew to love, fighting for a cause that I could believe in with a badass soundtrack all the way through. As soon as the credits rolled, I had that rare feeling of knowing that I played one of my favorite games of all time. Now imagine if a denser, definitive version of your favorite game--with a reimagined storyline, new characters, and even more flash and flare--was on the horizon? That's Persona 5 Royal. I've been following P5R since it was announced for Japan and leading up to its release earlier this year, and with every bit of information revealed was more hype. Admittedly, I had to lay off at a certain point and retain some element of surprise for when it comes westward in March. It's easy to spot this pattern with developer Atlus considering Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 Golden were both definitive versions that followed their base game. P5R is bringing even more to the table, though. The new Phantom Thief, Kasumi Yoshizawa, isn't just another party member to shake up the dynamic--she's central to the core plot. Her involvement changes the narrative threads, and affects what transpires in the main protagonist's life. Kasumi also presents an opportunity to expound on the complexities of the original story, and it seems that the key character Goro Akechi gets further development.P5R features a whole new Palace centered around Kasumi, an extra place to chill with Kichijoji, which offers a number of new hangout spots, and additional social events and cutscenes with the squad. There's an extra semester that seems to give the game more room to breathe towards the end--the original wound down rather quickly and on a somewhat stressful note. So, seeing a glimpse of the New Year's celebration in P5R and the more celebratory tone within, it's heartwarming to know that there was more to the journey all along.Kasumi Yoshizawa awakens her persona Cendrillon and fights alongside the Phantom Thieves. From a gameplay perspective, there'll be more to explore within existing Palaces and refined combat mechanics to make things less arduous--like Joker's hookshot to get to new areas or initiate ambushes for battles and additional persona evolutions to name a few. More importantly, P5R contains 20 new songs in the soundtrack, and if you've played the original release, you know how important music is--it's the glue that held the flamboyant style, unapologetic message, and utter confidence all together, but it also set the tone for the story's calmer, emotional moments. It might be hard to square all this exciting additional content with the fact that it already took me 120+ hours to play through the original release. If you ask me, more is better--I just want a reason to go back to a place I think of as a kind of home, while discovering new things and learning more about characters I see as friends. Here's the thing about "escapism" in video games, though. I don't necessarily want a game that solely makes me forget about the things that plague my world. Rather, I want to go somewhere that reflects my own world but with the power to exact change for the better, dismantling the abusive authority figures and structures that keep us down. Since finishing Persona 5, it's something I think about every day. I can't be a Phantom Thief, but I can be more diligent in enacting change around me. It's a game that helped me establish a sense of place and empowered me to branch out back in 2017, and I look forward to renewing that feeling in 2020. It's been two years since Christopher Nolan's name was attached to a film, but that's all about to change very soon. Tenet, a new action-thriller from the British director and producer, got an official trailer today (December 19) and there are some very confusing, very unsettling things happening. Check it out below. The film's synopsis has yet to be disclosed, but IMDb says Tenet revolves around "international espionage, time travel, and evolution." The trailer posits that a detective enters the afterlife and uses some sort of time rewinding powers to prevent a catastrophic world event from happening.Nolan sits in the director, producer, and writer chairs for this upcoming action flick. Fellow Dark Knight Trilogy producer Emma Thomas will also serve as a producer alongside Nolan. The film stars John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman), Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), and more.Tenet is scheduled to hit theatres on July 17, 2020.Christopher Nolan's last project was 2017's Dunkirk, a brutal depiction of World War II's Dunkirk evacuation. In our review of the film, we said, "Instead of wasting the big-budget on the big battles and destruction, Nolan saved it for grand and epic scenes focusing on the true heart of the film--which was the long and everlasting struggle of the human condition."Info from Gamespot.com

2020 is almost here, so we've asked GameSpot's staff to share which games they're looking forward to most in the new year. New consoles are going to dominate the headlines, but at the end of the day it's all about the games, and there are a ton of exciting ones to look forward to. When you're done reading this entry, follow along with all of our other end-of-the-year coverage collected in our Best of 2019 hub and our Most Anticipated of 2020 hub.2019 was a big year already for Halo with the release of The Master Chief Collection on PC, but 2020 is shaping up to be the most important year for Halo and Xbox since 2001. The newest entry in the sci-fi shooter series, Halo Infinite, releases in Holiday 2020 as a launch title for Microsoft's next-gen console Xbox Series X. This is notable for a number of reasons, including the fact that it's the first time since 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved that a Halo title has released at launch with new Xbox hardware. After the Xbox One stumbled at the start against the PS4 back in 2013, Microsoft has a massive opportunity to hit the ground running with Xbox Series X by making Halo Infinite the must-have title that fans have been hoping to see for years now. While Halo no doubt remains popular and stands today as one of the best-known FPS games ever, the series has lost some ground to its contemporaries. Halo Infinite represents a chance for Microsoft to reclaim Master Chief's former glory, and I'm excited for it. Microsoft has only so far released a cinematic trailer, so there is little to go on as it relates to official details. What we do know, however, is that Master Chief is not only coming back, but he will be more front and center this time, which is good news after Halo 5's story moved away from the famed super-soldier.Microsoft has also teased a new art style for Halo Infinite that is said to be emblematic of the original Halo's visual flourishes. That's also exciting to think about. On top of that, Halo Infinite runs on Microsoft's brand-new Slipspace Engine, which is said to offer and unlock all manner of new gameplay possibilities that could apply to innovations in the campaign and multiplayer spaces. Speaking of multiplayer, head-to-head combat has always been the Halo franchise's bread and butter, and I am excited to see what Microsoft cooks up. Halo 5's big innovation was Warzone, the MOBA-style mode that offered the biggest shakeup to the core gameplay formula in many years. The multiplayer world has evolved substantially since 2015's Halo 5--battle royale, specifically, has impacted how people think about multiplayer shooters--and Microsoft has an opportunity to prove again that Halo can be the trendsetter and trailblazer in FPS games. The Halo franchise hasn't had a steady, well-rounded release in a long time. Halo 4's multiplayer was a let-down, while Halo 5's story came up short with how it over promised and under delivered. Halo Infinite must introduce meaningful and exciting innovations across campaign and multiplayer, and as always, surprise fans with what they aren't expecting. Microsoft has given the team at 343 Industries extra time to release Halo Infinite, and I am terribly excited to see the promise of what five years of development will amount to. There will be doubters who say Master Chief is a relic of time gone by, but I say: bet against Master Chief at your peril. See Halo Infinite at Amazon Info from Gamespot.com

A cursory glance at 2019's box office would suggest a hugely successful year for Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. This was the year that James Cameron's Avatar was finally usurped as all-time box office king, with Avengers: Endgame taking home a colossal $2.79 billion worldwide, making it the most successful movie of all time. Endgame completed a decade of interconnected storytelling for Marvel, a run of 22 movies without a single commercial failure and very few critical missteps. Elsewhere in 2019, movies such as The Lion King, Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel, Joker, and Frozen II all proved to be massive hits. But really, the true success story of 2019 was that of Disney, not Hollywood in general. Seven of the year's 10 biggest movies were Disney releases, with the studio's ownership of Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar creating a stranglehold on blockbuster cinema that gave other studios very few opportunities of their own. And that's before we factor in the properties that it gained this year after buying Fox's entertainment assets, such as Avatar and the X-Men, that will surely boost its fortunes even higher in years to come. While it remains to be seen what the end result of such market dominance will be--a good film is a good film, and many audiences couldn't care less which studio makes it--it's hard to argue that a marketplace monopoly and a lack of variety are good things for cinema. And the dismal results achieved by the other studios show that they are already struggling to compete with Disney's commercial power.Of course, that's not to say that there weren't any big hits from other studios. DC's Joker became the biggest R-rated movie of all time, It: Chapter 2 was another horror smash, and the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw made more than $758.9 million worldwide. And Disney itself wasn't flop-proof--Tim Burton's Dumbo and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil both struggled to find big audiences. But these movies are part of a wider series of hugely successful live-action fairy tale remakes, and the success of Aladdin and The Lion King more than compensated for those disappointing results.Hollywood has never been particularly brave about spending money on new and original movies, preferring to reboot and repackage existing, proven properties with built-in audiences. 2019 proved no different in that regard, but in many cases, it seemed that those audiences no longer cared enough to actually turn up at the theater. It doesn't help that most of the year's biggest blockbuster flops were met by terrible reviews too--if you're not going to make it original, at least make it good, but this was the year that both of these lessons were seemingly forgotten.Hell, no!The year of deeply disappointing blockbusters kicked off in April, when the Hellboy reboot hit theaters. Hellboy had always been more of a cult property than other comic book adaptations, and the $50 million budget was more modest than some other big movies this year. But the result was absolutely terrible, replacing the humor, imagination, and thrilling action of Guillermo Del Toro's two movies with bad performances, muddled plotting, and terrible digital gore. With its release preceded by reports of serious production troubles and an almost unanimous critical panning, Hellboy failed utterly at the box office and plans for a sequel--which is clearly set up at the movie's end--were quickly forgotten.God, Zilla! While blockbusters are increasingly released throughout the year, the summer still remains--for now--a key period for many big movies. Sadly, in 2019, the warmer months proved to be a wasteland of bad franchise films, with a series of critical and commercial failures stretching through to the fall. One of the biggest surprises was Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which arrived at the end of May. While Godzilla has existed in pop-culture for over 60 years, the success of 2014's Gareth Edwards-directed reboot showed that there was still plenty of interest in a well-written, stylish, and exciting new take on familiar material. Unfortunately, the sequel is none of those things. King of the Monsters should've knocked it out of the park--director Michael Doguhterty proved his movie monster skills with the terrific Christmas horror Krampus, the cast was strong (including Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Charles Dance), and the movie featured no fewer than four big monsters from classic Japanese movies. But the incomprehensibly-plotted script and seemingly perverse decision to set every monster fight in darkness, rain, or fog resulted in an interminable slog of a film.X-tremely badA week after Godzilla stomped into theatres, it was joined the X-Men movie Dark Phoenix. To be fair, no one was particularly surprised that it didn't turn out to be any good. The previous X-Men film, 2017's Apocalypse, was also bad, and it was hard to escape the feeling that this was a franchise on its last legs, particularly with Disney now owning the property and looking ahead to a complete reboot. Nevertheless, the Dark Phoenix saga is one of comic books' great story arcs and fully deserving of a screen version better than the last attempt, 2006's The Last Stand. Sophie Turner did her best to give the tragic story of Jean Grey some emotional power, but bored performances by the likes of Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence--who really look like they'd rather be anywhere but on an X-Men set--and a distinct lack of thrills made it was very hard to engage with the story. It was a sad end to one of modern cinema's first superhero franchises, and while it's exciting to think what Marvel might ultimately do with these characters, it's a shame the series couldn't have had a better send-off than this.Men in Crap2019 also saw several decades-old series brought back with the vague hope that enough people remembered or cared about them. Spoiler: they didn't. Mid-June saw the release of Men in Black: International, the belated fourth entry in the sci-fi comedy series that kicked off with the Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones-starring original in 1997. This time, Thor Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thimpson were cast as the alien-chasing agents, but the movie contained almost none of the humor and chemistry they brought to that Marvel movie. Men in Black: International was a classic case of a studio thinking that just because a series was popular in a previous decade it still had an audience. But it's questionable if anyone even wanted a second or third movie (have you ever met a big Men in Black fan?), let alone this unfunny, charmless, and boring fourth installment. No one knows what the bizarre-sounding Men in Black/Jump Street crossover that was in development at one stage would've been like--but it's hard to think it would've been less interesting than what we did get. With a woeful $253.9 million worldwide gross--only slightly more than half of what the original movie made 22 years ago--don't expect to see a fifth part any time soon.Dark FarceA commercial failure doesn't necessarily mean the end of a franchise. When Terminator Genisys bombed in 2015, many predicted that a sixth Terminator movie would be a long time coming. But the return of James Cameron to the franchise he created quickly put the next film into development, and in October, Terminator: Dark Fate arrived. Produced by Cameron and directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller, the film took the Force Awakens approach of trying to remind fans why they loved the series in the first place, by combining a new cast with old faces and presenting a greatest hits package of cool Terminator moments. While the result was a slight improvement on Genisys, it ultimately added nothing to a series that probably should've ended back in 1991. As with Men in Black, not to mention Predator and Alien in previous years, it demonstrated that giving a movie a familiar title simply isn't enough to get audiences to care if you're offering very little elsewhere.Gemini PannedAs always, the vast majority of 2019's blockbusters--both good and bad--were reboots and sequels. The only original big budget movie to hit screens this year was Gemini Man, a sci-fi action thriller in which Will Smith fights a younger version of himself. The film had been in development for many years, and advances in digital deaging technology finally helped make it a reality. And the movie was praised for its technical aspects, with director Ang Lee continuing his fascination with digital trickery and higher frame rate technology. If only as much time and money had been spent on the script. For all the technical wonder of Gemini Man, it was ultimately hamstrung by a hokey screenplay that feels more like something Jean-Claude Van Damme might have starred in during the 1990s than a wildly expensive high concept blockbuster featuring one of the world's biggest stars (sorry JCVD, we still love you).Of course, every year delivers disappointing blockbusters, bad franchise movies, and unwelcome reboots and sequels. With so much spent on these huge movies, studios look to take as few risks as possible in order to appeal to a wide audience, which all too often results in predictable and unmemorable films. Nevertheless, 2019 was worse than most. Leaving Disney aside, it's been a financially disappointing year for every major studio, and it's not hard to think that a few more risks--and smaller budgets--might have eased the pain a little and given fans a reason to return to these venerable franchises. It's tempting to think that studios might learn, and make some more original blockbusters--with a better script than Gemini Man obviously. After all, there's only so many IPs you can rely on before you need to create more, and even Star Wars and The Terminator were new movies once. But let's face it, this is Hollywood, and forward-thinking has rarely been its great strength. Probably the best we can hope for is that the next reboot of whatever decades-old franchise is given to filmmakers who really care about it, and have something new to offer audiences than the tired disappointments we watched in 2019. Fingers crossed.Info from Gamespot.com

The big new Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker, opens in theatres around the world this weekend. It is expected to be a juggernaut at the box office, but just how much will the sci-fi epic pull in over its first weekend? According to The Hollywood Reporter, estimates show the movie is tracking to make between $175 million and $200 million for the first weekend in the US and Canada alone. That would make it the lowest-performing film of the new trilogy that began in 2015.Disney's own estimates are lower, at $160 million. It's common for big film studios to be overly cautious with their estimates, for a variety of reasons.A $200 million opening for The Rise of Skywalker would be less than the $220 million that The Last Jedi made over its first weekend in 2017 and below the $248 million that The Force Awakens pulled in when it hit theatres in 2015. Check out all the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Easter eggs you might have missed in the new movie! The final weeks of December are historically the biggest of the year for box office ticket sales, as people generally have more free time thanks to the holidays to spend on leisure activities like a trip to the local cinema.Global estimates for The Rise of Skywalker are not available at this point. Also unknown is what impact, if any, the relatively low review scores for the film will have on box office results. The Rise of Skywalker did not scare off all the competition at the box office, as Universal is releasing its wacky and weird Cats movie on December 20 as well. It's expected to make as much as $17 million over its first weekend, according to the box office estimates. The Rise of Skywalker's bigger competitor is likely Jumanji: The Next Level, which enters its second weekend after a strong $59.3 million opening weekend. For more on The Rise of Skywalker, check out GameSpot's review: Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise Of Skywalker Review - A Galactic Disappointment.Read next: Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker - 48 Easter Egg From Past Movies Star Wars Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Ending Explained How Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Ends For Every Major Character Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker - 48 Easter Egg From Past Movies Is Baby Yoda In Star Wars 9: The Rise Of Skywalker?
