Xbox Series X is aiming for a holiday release, and a new console launch usually comes alongside shiny new exclusives that showcase its power. Microsoft has a different plan in mind this time, though, as head of Microsoft Studios Matt Booty says its first-party games will be entirely cross-gen for the first year or two."As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices," Booty told MCV. "We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we're committed to them with content."So rather than force an upcoming game to be exclusive to the Series X, Booty says Microsoft will keep releasing games for Xbox One and let the upgraded performance on the Series X speak for itself. That means making sure its flagship game, Halo Infinite, will be ready to showcase the new console at launch."Our approach is to pick one or two IP that we're going to focus on and make sure that they're there at the launch of the console, taking advantage of all the features. And for us that's going to be Halo Infinite, which is a big opportunity. It's the first time in over 15 years that we'll have a Halo title launching in sync with a new console. And that team is definitely going to be doing things to take advantage of [Series X]."It's a model more akin to a phone upgrade. Games still release across devices, but you'll get a better performance with the newer hardware. Microsoft has signaled this direction for the next generation before, especially with its announcement that "Series X" is just one of potentially several models we'll see in the coming years. The line of products itself, the company has stated, is now just "Xbox."This may be a gamble, however, as players who are still able to enjoy games like Halo Infinite on their current hardware may not feel as compelled to upgrade. That could impact hardware adoption rates, when we know Sony is looking to shift its player-base to PS5 more rapidly. For more on the Xbox Series X, check out everything we know. Details surrounding the story of Star Trek: Picard are still pretty hazy. We know it concerns the storied Starfleet captain, Jean-Luc Picard, 15 years after his retirement from Starfleet. But we know very little about why Picard retired from the rank of admiral.Ahead of the Star Trek: Picard release date on January 23, CBS All Access has filled in the gaps--at least slightly. The streaming service released an episode of its Star Trek short film series, Short Treks, that works as something of a setup for the events of Picard. In "Children of Mars," we see some of the events that eventually spur Picard to leave Starfleet and take on a more reclusive life. The episode follows two girls in a Martian school who have a tumultuous relationship. Their animosity grows throughout the episode, until they're together during a tragic attack on Mars by a group of powerful ships. While it's not clear that the two characters will play a role in Picard, we do know a few things about the situation in which they find themselves."Children of Mars" takes place some 15 years before the start of Picard, and it's this attack on Mars and the trauma surrounding it that's had such a profound effect on the legendary captain. From a news cast that plays during the attack, we now know that it's executed by "rogue synthetics." You might also spot a shot of Picard on those screens as well--as an admiral in Starfleet during the attack, he's a major figure in responding to the attack. So we know that a tragedy perpetrated by these "rogue synths" is a big part of the setup for Picard, although it's still not clear what synths are or how they relate to the bigger picture of what's going on in the series. It's worth noting, however, that a big part of Picard's story is his relationship with Data, the android who served on the Enterprise in The Next Generation and spent his life endeavoring to be more human. Data sacrificed himself to save Picard and the Enterprise at the end of the last of the Star Trek: The Next Generation films, Star Trek: Nemesis, and the trailers for Star Trek: Picard suggest that event still haunts Picard as well.Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of GameSpot.Info from Gamespot.com

This summer's blockbuster Gemini Man, directed by Ang Lee, revolves around hitman Henry Brogan becoming the target of an assassination by a younger, cloned version of himself. The film comes out on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 14, and it is loaded with extras, including an alternate opening featuring dueling assassinations. In the original opening, Brogan (Will Smith) sets up a near-impossible assassination attempt as he lay on a hill thousands of feet away from his target, who is on a speeding train. Brogan is a master of his craft, as this sequence sets up, but he's lost a step or two, as he hits his target in the neck and not in the head.As far as the alternate opening goes, the scene with Brogan on the hill is still there, but the sequence cuts between this and another where another hitman kills a man in a moving vehicle during the middle of the night in a storm. It's revealed at the very end of the scene that it is a younger version of Brogan, as his face is illuminated by lightning. For as cool as the opening is, jumping back and forth between the older and younger Brogan lessens the "shock value" of the two coming face-to-face later on in the movie, even though the selling point of the film is "look at old Will Smith fight young Will Smith." Regardless, the original opening is a bit better as it establishes the character and builds towards that reveal later on.In GameSpot's review of Gemini Man, Chris E. Hayner said, "Lee knew what he was making with Gemini Man, and it shows. It's a movie-length technology sizzle reel. This is a film meant to show audiences just how far the medium has come. From filming at 120 FPS in 4K, to digitally building a clone of the movie's star to make them fight in a series of over-the-top action sequences, there's a lot to marvel at in Gemini Man. But the visuals can also border on uncanny, and Gemini Man just doesn't have the story to back that action up."Gemini Man on 4K UHD$35 $28 See on Amazon Check out the special features for the upcoming home release of Gemini Man, which comes to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 14. The new trailer for Birds of Prey is here. The movie is the latest DC release and it sees Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn from 2016's Suicide Squad, though it has no connection to that movie. It hits theaters next month. The trailer opens with Harley performing a hold-up in typically hilarious style, before we are introduced to Harley's new all-female crew. There's Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain, who come together to fight the evil Black Mask. Despite having an R-rating, the movie is clearly very different to last year's Joker. It looks very funny and is packed with action, music, and hyper-stylized photography. Check it out below. The movie's full title is Birds Of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and this new promo follows October's first trailer. The film also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, and Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. The character you meet will differ depending on your version: Sword players will encounter Klara, a Poison-type trainer, while Shield players will meet Avery, a Psychic trainer. On top of that, you'll be able to catch a new Pokemon: Galarian Slowpoke. In case you missed it: The Epic Games Store has been giving away a ton of free games lately. The store's holiday sale included a marathon of 12 free games, and this past week, Epic users could claim three more free games. Things are finally slowing down a bit this week, as this week's offering includes just one game for Epic users, but it's one you shouldn't skip out on. From now until January 16, you can claim the chaotic, hand-drawn Metroidvania Sundered: Eldritch Edition for free at Epic. All you need is a free Epic account to claim the game, and it'll be yours to keep forever. From the developers of Jotun, Sundered released in 2017 and follows a woman named Eshe who finds an ancient monument and gets sucked into an otherworldly cavern. In the underworld, Eshe encounters a malevolent entity known as the Shining Trapezohedron, which becomes her guide, and learns the world is now overrun with monsters and machines. The terrifying hordes of enemies and ever-changing world are heavily inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. As Eshe fights her way through the world and attempts to escape, Eshe encounters corrupted Elder Shards, which can grant her the ability to use ancient eldritch powers. The game has multiple endings based on what you decide to do with those relics--embrace their chaotic power or destroy them for good.Sundered also includes the Magnate of the Gong update, which added local co-op multiplayer support for up to four players. Eldritch Edition also includes new areas and a new boss battle. The game earned a solid 8/10 in GameSpot's Sundered review for its fast-paced combat, well-paced progression, and overall creation of tension and unease."Sundered is an enjoyable journey that iterates upon the Metroidvania style in ways that are both satisfying and substantial," wrote Matt Espineli. "Its progression systems are constantly fulfilling and combat is complex and exhilarating. While rare moments of unfair circumstances hold it back, Sundered remains a compelling and rewarding experience that you’ll be eager to play again, if only to seek out its other endings or simply to wipe out another swarm of grotesque creatures."On January 16, Sundered will be replaced by Epic's next free game, platforming adventure Horace. The scares will continue. Coming off of its 9th season, AHS 1984, FX has decided to renew American Horror Story for three more seasons--in addition to the previously announced Season 10 renewal. That means the series will run through at least Season 13.The news was announced at the TCA winter press tour. "Ryan [Murphy] and Brad [Falchuk] are the undisputed masters of horror TV, having created the anthological limited series with American Horror Story and sustaining its success for nearly a decade as FX's highest-rated series," FX Networks and FX Productions chairman John Landgraf said in a statement. "We are grateful to them and Dana Walden and our studio partners for committing to another three years. AHS has showcased a wealth of award-winning actors since day one and we appreciate the contributions of everyone, including Ryan, Brad and fellow executive producers Tim Minear, James Wong, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Bradley Buecker, the writers, directors, cast, and crew for each new, unforgettable installment of American Horror Story."The 10th season of American Horror Story is scheduled to air sometime later this year. At this point, though, a theme has not been announced for the next installment. Given how varied the theme of the series has been from year to year--topics range from the 1980s to politics to settings that include creepy hotels, freakshows, asylums, and anything else you can make spooky--there's no telling what the team will tackle in its next season. As you eagerly await the next installment of American Horror Story, make sure you check out GameSpot's extensive coverage of the latest edition, AHS 1984.Info from Gamespot.com

While on the press tour for his latest film The Grudge, actor John Cho spoke a little about Netflix's currently delayed Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation. The actor admitted that he has not spoken to the director of the anime series, Shinichiro Watanabe, yet.In an interview with IGN, Cho was asked if he consulted Watanabe while preparing to portray such an iconic character in anime. Cho told IGN that the two have not yet talked, but he continued to express excitement for the opportunity to play Cowboy Bebop's main protagonist Spike Spiegel."It's such a unique piece of material, it's got such a unique vibe, so many disparate elements coming together into a single project that's so weird," Cho said. "I think that was the big thing I was focusing on all the time was...we got to keep it strange and that's hard to do, but I watched some of the stuff and I'm really happy with it."Cho also shared two of his favorite moments from Cowboy Bebop: the scene where Faye confronts a naked Glen in "Jupiter Jazz (Part 1)," and the eight-minute hunt for a Betamax player from "Speak Like A Child." Cho called the Betamax scene insane because it's "eight, long minutes and they had to draw that."The live-action Cowboy Bebop series was in production for a short while before Cho incurred an on-set injury. The knee injury, which happened during a "routine and well-rehearsed scene," caused Netflix to shut production down for about a year. Despite the injury and the setback in production, Netflix said it remains "fully committed" to Cho as Spike Spiegel and is willing to wait for him to heal properly.Alex Garcia Lopez, who has also worked on Netflix shows like The Witcher, will direct the first two Cowboy Bebop episodes, while Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) is said to write the first episode. While Hulu specializes in giving its users the ability to watch new TV episodes the day after they air, that hasn't been the case for FX and FXX programming for quite some time. However, since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox--including FX--and the House of Mouse is the majority shareholder of Hulu, fans will soon be able to watch FX shows the day after they air on the streaming service. At the TCA winter press tour, FX revealed the line-up for series that will be on Hulu the day after they air on the network. Hearthstone is closing out the Year of the Dragon by bringing back a mode that's been dormant for years. Galakrond's Awakening, the single-player component for the recent Descent of Dragons expansion, will eschew the trend of dynamic dungeon run events and instead introduce the first Solo Adventure since 2016. And that means a new mini-batch of cards to collect. The event will release in installments on a weekly basis starting on January 21, and each will include two separate campaign chapters: one in which you play as the League of EVIL attempting to resurrect Galakrond, and another where you play as the heroic League of Explorers trying to stop them. In the process of working your way through the chapters, you'll earn 35 new collectible cards, injecting some new ones into the meta mid-season. You can see the four revealed so far below. The last Solo Adventure was One Night in Karazhan in 2016, but this one will work a little differently. The default difficulty will have you take on bosses with pre-built decks, while the much harder Heroic difficulty will let you use your own card collection to build a deck that's up to the challenge. In the first installment, Battle of the Frozen Coast, the EVIL side will be free for all players and add four new cards. The League of Explorers portion will be available separately for $7 or 700 in-game gold, and will add seven new cards. The other three installments will cost the same price for both chapters combined, and include eight new cards each. Or you can purchase it all as a bundle for $20, and pre-purchasing that option will also get you a Golden Classic pack. This will conclude the year-long story from the Year of the Dragon, the first time Blizzard has made a single continuous narrative over a full season of Hearthstone. That also means the company is probably planning to introduce the next season, and possibly another year-long storyline, sometime this spring.Info from Gamespot.com

The road to get the Y: The Last Man comic by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra made into a live-action series has been a rocky one. First, it was in the works as a movie and now, it's a TV show that has gone through a few showrunners. During the Television Critics Association winter press tour, more information about the upcoming series has come to light.During the FX presentation at the TCAs, John Landgraf, chairman or FX Networks and FX Productions, spoke about the series. "It's in pre production," Landgraf explained. "Eliza Clark is is running that show with Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson. We've seen, five [or] six scripts now. That's that's all I can say. We haven't scheduled because it hasn't gone into production yet. We changed showrunners and did a big sort of reboot on it and so that was a big redevelopment. But that seems to be going well."One of the biggest criticisms from fans of the upcoming series is the change in the name. While the comic is titled "Y: The Last Man," the working title of the FX series has been simply "Y." However, that could change in the future. "It's informally called Y, but we have not gone through the process of figuring out exactly how to market it," Landgraf said. The series could still end up being called Y: The Last Man, but it's still very early in the pre-production process. There is no set date for the series yet. Aside from Y: The Last Man's future, FX had a few other announcements at its presentation. The fan-favorite horror anthology series American Horror Story has been renewed for three more years, bringing the show to Season 13. "Ryan [Murphy] and Brad [Falchuk] are the undisputed masters of horror TV, having created the anthological limited series with American Horror Story and sustaining its success for nearly a decade as FX's highest-rated series," Landgraf explained in a statement.Additionally, FX is now working with Hulu to bring its shows to the streaming service the day after they air, and some of these series will be exclusive to Hulu.Info from Gamespot.com

The Pokemon Company has outlined a few changes coming to its trading card game with the introduction of Pokemon Sword and Shield. Among these changes--which include alterations to attributes, stats, and more--is the removal of the Fairy Pokemon type, which is said to go into effect on February 21.The company announced that "the Fairy-type, which was introduced in the [Pokemon X and Y] series, will no longer be supported in the Sword and Shield series." As such, all Fairy types seen in the Pokemon games will be "generally" represented as Psychic-type in the trading card game. Further, Poison-types are now Darkness-types instead of Psychic-types.Other alterations to the trading card game come in the form of resistances and weaknesses. Pokemon from the Sword and Shield series will have a resistance of -30 instead of -20. Weaknesses remain uncharged but matchups have shifted a little. These include Water-types being weak against Lightning instead of Grass, Psychic-types losing to Darkness instead of Psychic, and Darkness-types being weak against Grass instead of Fighting. The Pokemon Company said these changes are meant to "maintain a balance among types."Also starting on February 21, the same day the Sword and Shield cards become legal for tournament play, is a minor adjustment to the first turn. In addition to preventing the player who goes first from attacking on the first turn, a rule introduced during the X and Y series, the player who goes first will now be unable to play a Supporter card on the first turn. The Pokemon Company said these changes should "make it less advantage[ous] to go first" and hopes they "result in interesting choices in both gameplay and deck building." Pokemon Sword and Shield are getting two big expansions that will add a ton of new creatures to collect, but if you don't want to buy the extra content you'll still be able to obtain the monsters. Nintendo announced that the expansions will launch alongside free updates for all players, allowing all Sword and Shield owners to be on a level playing field for trading Pokemon."These updates will allow those who don't have the Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield Expansion Pass to obtain the Pokemon that appear on the Isle of Armor and in the Crown Tundra through other means, such as trading," the presentation stated. That means if you don't purchase the expansions but have your eye on the new Legendary Kubfu, you just need to find a friend to trade one to you. It's probably not viable to ask your friends capture all of the new Pokemon for you this way, but it seems reasonable enough if you just want a few in particular. The two expansions will take place on new territories, and also pack new cosmetic options for your avatar and even your bike. Free updates are also coming to Sword and Shield that will add more than 200 older Pokemon. The first expansion, Isle of Armor, is coming in June. The second, Crown Tundra, will follow this fall. The expansion pass costs $30 and includes both sets of DLC.In the meantime, a free update has gone live that lets you talk with a few of the new characters from the expansions, and even catch a special Galarian Slowpoke.
