One of the first things we find out about Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard is that he no longer serves in Starfleet. Anybody who knows Picard what a big deal that is--this is a guy who spent his entire life forwarding the ideals of humanity's exploration of space, who wanted to be a Starfleet captain from childhood, and who sacrificed the prospect of having a family for his career. For Picard to leave behind the life of an explorer means that something major must have happened. In the first episode of Star Trek: Picard, "Remembrance," we get some sense of what happened to drive the legendary captain, and later admiral, from Starfleet service. We don't have all the details yet, but some exposition in "Remembrance" explains the broad strokes of what finally caused Picard to leave space and head back to his family's vineyard in France. Put simply: Starfleet let Picard down. Star Trek: Picard News and Features Star Trek: Picard Episode 1 - 21 Star Trek Easter Egg And References Star Trek: Picard Episode 1 "Remembrance" Review - O Captain My Captain The 11 Most Bizarre Moments Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Trek Picard: Patrick Stewart Asks Whoopi Goldberg To Join Season 2 The situation started when the Romulan Star Empire learned a star in its territory was going to explode in a supernova, destroying Romulus and killing a whole bunch of Romulans. That's actually the setup for J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek movie, and while most of that movie takes place in an alternate timeline, the events that destroy Romulus are part of the prime Star Trek timeline where Star Trek: The Next Generation, its four sequel movies, and Star Trek: Picard take place. With impending doom bearing down on them, the Romulans reached out to the Federation for help. The thing is, the Romulans and the Federation have been enemies for a long, long time. Throughout The Next Generation, there's an uneasy cease-fire between the two factions, but the Romulans always seem to be on the verge of war and they're constantly spying on everyone around them. In fact, Star Trek: Nemesis is all about how the Enterprise crew narrowly stops a Romulan leader from destroying Earth and starting a war with the Federation. So basically up to learning about the supernova, tensions between the Romulans and the Federation are relatively high.So when the Romulans asked for help, there were a lot of people in the Federation who were reluctant to expend a bunch of resources and maybe risk a lot of lives in order to help their enemies. But the tenets of the Federation and Starfleet are all about respect for life and the duty to help others--so Picard manages to convince Starfleet to mount a rescue to save the Romulans, despite their history, because it's the right thing to do.Starfleet builds a giant rescue armada of ships at the Utopia Planitia shipyard orbiting Mars colony, and everything's going pretty well. Then tragedy strikes--a group of rogue "synths," or robotic workers, attacks Mars. The colony is utterly destroyed, as is the rescue armada. As a result, the Federation bans all synths, and Starfleet decides not to mount the rescue of Romulus. As Picard says, he believes that not helping the Romulans demonstrates the Federation and Starfleet turning its back on its duties and principles, and that caused him to resign. We don't know much else about the details of Picard's departure, although the Romulans who work in the Picard Chateau, Laris and Zhaban, make it clear that a lot of Romulans respect Picard for what he did. Unfortunately, Picard's decision took him out of Starfleet, and it's clear in the first episode of the show that he regrets the decision. We'll have to wait for future episodes to expand on Picard's backstory even more.Disclosure: ViacomCBS is GameSpot's parent company.Info from Gamespot.com

Re:Mind, the newest DLC for Kingdom Hearts 3, launched today, January 23 on PlayStation 4. Fans and Square Enix enthusiasts who complete the expansion, however, may notice something eerily familiar about the DLC's ending--it looks a lot like an old Final Fantasy XV trailer from back when it was Final Fantasy Versus XIII.Upon finishing the Re:Mind expansion, a cutscene shows Yozora sitting in the back of a car as the chauffeur drives through a cityscape. For those who remember, back in 2011, Square Enix cut together a similar trailer for the then-named Versus XIII: Noctis sitting in the back of a car driven by a chauffeur. It was one of many early trailers the company debuted when talking about the spin-off, which was then in development exclusively for the PlayStation 3.YouTuber Ouji uploaded a side-to-side comparison video showing the similarities between the FFVXIII and KH3 clips--and they look very identical to each other. You can check out the comparison below. The common factor between the two games is Tetsuya Nomura, who is the director of Kingdom Hearts 3 and was originally heading up Final Fantasy Versus XIII's development. Nomura would eventually relinquish his Versus XIII duties to Hajime Tabata so that he could focus entirely on Kingdom Hearts 3.Alongside the new DLC, Square Enix delivered a free update for Kingdom Hearts 3 across all platforms. Tne new update, patch 1.07, adds new abilities and keyblades, new story mode content, and more.Kingdom Hearts 3 was received warmly by critics when it launched on January 29, 2019. The game got an 8/10 rating in our Kingdom Hearts 3 review, with editor Tamoor Hussain writing, "In 2002, as Sora, I left Destiny Islands to travel across the universe and make new friends. In 2019 I brought old ones home, and I had so much fun doing it."Info from Gamespot.com

During our time playing the first three hours of Doom Eternal at a preview event we were able to catch up with creative director Hugo Martin from id Software. We talked about how the team changed its approach to difficulty settings, why they went in certain directions with its mechanics, and how long the overall experience is going to be. But we also talked about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the equally exciting Nintendo Switch exclusive that shares Doom Eternal's March 20 release date. So, we asked him how he feels about launching alongside Doom's polar opposite--an easygoing life sim that's about finding fun in low-key daily chores--to which Martin said, "I think it's awesome and it speaks to the amazing diversity that we see in games today. I honestly root for other games and other studios." He continued, "I'm so proud to work in the game industry and the fact that two games that are so completely different, getting a ton of press, come out on the same day. It's an incredible time to be in development and I'm excited to play Animal Crossing."Martin shared his enthusiasm for independent games and big-name blockbusters alike, alluding to his own recent experiences. "One of my favorite games is Inside and I just thought that it was just as engaging as any other. And God of War. I mean, [between] the two of those games, which one do I like more? I like them both and they're both completely different," Martin told us.If you're looking for a more relaxing time this coming March, be sure to check out everything we know about Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ has yet to be given a premiere date, it might end up taking every longer to debut than originally expected. According to a new report, work on the show has been put on hold for an indefinite period of time. The news comes from Collider, which reports that the crew for the series that was preparing to film at London's Pinewood studios has been sent home with no timeframe on when the series will be moving forward. As for why it's delayed, Collider cites rumors of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy being unhappy with the scripts written thus far. Sources tell the outlet that production could potentially kick off this summer, but there's no guarantee. If true, this wouldn't be the first time a Star Wars project has faced a creative setback in recent years. Both Rogue One and Solo were reworked during production. In Solo's case, Ron Howard took over the job of directing the film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Most recently, The Rise of Skywalker was originally to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, before he was replaced by JJ Abrams. The Obi-Wan project was previously revealed to be set eight years after the Star Wars prequels and the character's duel with Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith, which ended with his former Padawan's transformation into Darth Vader. Ewan McGregor, who played the character in Episodes I-III, is set to reprise the role. Deborah Chow, who directed Episodes 3 and 7 of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, is signed on to serve as executive producer and showrunner of the series. The Mandalorian will return later in 2020 for Season 2. Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Clone Wars will debut a new season on Disney+ on February 21.Disclosure: ViacomCBS is GameSpot's parent company.Info from Gamespot.com

In October 2019, Hearthstone pro player Ng Wai Chung, known as "Blitzchung," was banned from the game after shouting "liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" in a post-match interview. Blitzchung's support of protesters in Hong Kong landed him a six-month ban (which was initially a year ban and a forfeiture of his prize money, although it was toned down), and led to protests at BlizzCon 2019.Now Blitzchung has spoken up about his decision in a video by People Make Games. In it, he reflects on the choice to say what he said, which was not planned--it was a spontaneous statement."So you know, when so many people are protesting out there and I'm just sat there, playing my tournaments...I just kind of feel bad and I want to do something," he says. Blitzchung lives in Hong Kong and says that he loves it there."There is some things more important that my career," he says, referencing his protest. Asked about the response from Blizzard at the time, he said he was "a bit disappointed" at them. "But I mean, it's something I can understand," he adds. He compares Blizzard to Hong Kong itself: "Maybe it's getting worse, but do I hate it? No."Asked if Blitzchung was still glad that he did it, after everything that has happened, he responded positively. "Yeah. I just never...I'll do it. Even if I had a chance to go back, I'd still do it...it's a must-do thing."In a statement released shortly after the original incident, saying that he was not sure if he would return to the game. "Honestly, I have no idea on that yet. Since my next tournament is very likely to be the grandmaster tournament of next season, it's probably at least a few months from now on. I will take this time to relax myself to decide if I am staying in competitive Hearthstone scene or not," he said at the time. However, in this new interview, it's said that he will indeed return in April.Info from Gamespot.com

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD for Steam has received a strange new update that lets you ditch your ball for three other shapes. The game, which first released on the Wii back in 2006 before eventually getting a HD remaster on consoles and PC in 2019, will now let you ditch the ball on PC--but you can't just control the monkey directly. On the character select screen, you can now alter what plastic shape AiAi is rolling around in (it's seemingly not possible for the other monkeys). Type in "cube" and you'll end up in a cube-shaped lump of plastic; the same is true if you type in "triangle" or "star". This will also affect how you move, it seems, as the physics differ between shapes.[Steam Update Notice]We updated the Steam version of “Super Monkey Ball:BBHD†today!Enter "cube", "triangle" or "star" on the character selection screen with the keyboard, it is possible to play with the AiAi that changed to each shape! The Sonic the Hedgehog movie releases on February 14, 2020, and it's expected to perform reasonably well. The film, which carries a budget of $95 million, is expected to open north of $40 million. The Hollywood Reporter is tracking the movie at opening between the range of $40-45 million for the four-day weekend (Monday is President's Day). Deadline believes it could go higher, with a range of $41-47 million. There's the chance of the movie finishing above or below these figures, of course, but tracking tends to be a good indication of how a movie will do. How reviews turn out could also influence the movie's opening. Traditionally, video game movies have performed better internationally than they have domestically, too--it's fair to expect this will be the case with Sonic the Hedgehog as well.If it hits the high-end of estimates, it could end up having the second best domestic opening weekend of any video game adaptation, although its direct competition opened over three days rather than four. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider opened to $47,735,743 back in 2001. It will likely finish below Detective Pikachu, though, which earned $54,365,242 in its opening weekend (both figures via Box Office Mojo). The Sonic the Hedgehog movie has gone through a turbulent production, with a full character redesign being commissioned after the film's disastrous first trailer. Thankfully, a team led by Sonic comic illustrator Tyson Hesse gave gaming's premiere hedgehog a much more lovable look.Sonic is gearing up for a big 2020, with Sega planning on announcing Sonic news on the 20th of every month.Info from Gamespot.com

If you're playing Overwatch right now you may hear the anguished cries of players facing an enemy Reaper. Since he recovers health equal to 40% of damage done, Reaper is extremely difficult to kill in many situations, to the point where it can feel impossible. Thankfully, the latest update being put through its paces on the Overwatch Public Test Realm indicates that Blizzard will make Reaper a little more killable. The Overwatch PTR patch notes detail a number of changes for Hanzo, McCree, Orisa, Sigma, Baptiste, and of course Reaper--and many of them are quite significant. Reaper's health regeneration will be dropped down to 30% of damage done, which should make fights against him a little more winnable. Hanzo, meanwhile, has had his Storm Arrow damage reduced, while Orisa has received a variety of nerfs.McCree players will be happy to hear his health has gone up a little and Deadeye no longer locks aim, but his primary fire has slightly more recovery time. The range on Sigma's Hyperspheres has been reduced and Baptiste's secondary fire healing is a little less effective, among other things. You can see the full list of changes below. Keep in mind these are only available on the PTR, where the changes will be tested and, if necessary, tweaked, before being pushed out to the live game for everyone. The PTR is only available to players on PC.Hero UpdatesHanzoStorm Arrows - Damage reduced from 70 to 60McCree General - Base health increased from 200 to 250Peacekeeper (Primary Fire) - Recovery time increased from 0.42 to 0.5 secondsDeadeye - Firing Deadeye no longer locks the player’s aimReaper: The Reaping (Passive) - Healing amount reduced from 40% to 30% of damage dealtOrisaFusion Driver (Primary Fire) - Damage reduced from 11 to 9Fortify - Cooldown increased from 8 to 10 secondsHalt! - Snare duration reduced from 1 to 0.65 secondsSigmaHyperspheres (Primary Fire) - Range reduced from 22 to 20 metersGravitic Flux - Can now be interrupted before targets begin falling and impact slow duration reduced from 0.9 to 0.6 secondsAccretion - Explosion damage reduced from 60 to 40BaptisteBiotic Launcher (Primary Fire) - Recovery time increased from 0.36 to 0.45 secBiotic Launcher (Secondary Fire) - Heal explosion reduced from 60 to 50Overwatch is currently celebrating the Lunar New Year with an event that gives players the chance to unlock more cosmetic customization options. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot begins right where the anime does: introducing us to Goku and his son Gohan just before the Saiyans are set to invade earth, revealing Goku's true Saiyan heritage and setting off a chain of events that threatens the entire universe. It's a story we've seen played out in many Dragon Ball Z games over the years, but unlike recent examples, Kakarot tells its tale by way of a narrative-driven RPG rather than a strictly combat-focused game. It gives life to the world and story of DBZ in a refreshing way, offering us a glimpse into what life is like for Goku and his many companions outside of battles to decide the fate of the universe. All of Dragon Ball Z's major story arcs are contained here: the Saiyan invasion, the showdown with Frieza on planet Namek, the Androids, the fight against Cell, and Majin Buu's story. But among all of these massive, earth-shattering sagas and intense fights are numerous smaller stories and character interactions that many games have simply glossed over. The game's structure is split into parts: free-roaming/exploration sequences with a semi-open world, battle scenes against foes big and small, and cutscenes where you watch some of the most dramatic story moments of DBZ play out in gorgeous in-engine renditions. There's a good balance between all of these; it rarely feels like you're spending too long watching a cutscene or that you're thrust into constant battle without being able to take a moment to catch your breath. Sometimes the exploration sequences can seem overlong, but a lot of that depends on how much time you want to spend doing side quests and hunting collectibles like power-up orbs, food supplies, and materials for side pursuits like cooking and crafting. It's not essential to spend a lot of time on side pursuits, but it does provide benefits--and while you're flying around the big, vibrant environments, it's easy to be swept up in exploring the DBZ world itself, which is filled with giant fish, rampaging dinosaurs, and futuristic cities. One striking thing about DBZ: Kakarot is how it showcases the large cast of the anime. You begin the game as Goku, but as the story progresses, you assume control over several other characters, like Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Trunks, to name a few. Familiar faces like Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Yamcha, and Android 18 also appear to aid you in combat as assistants. Many of the other supporting DBZ cast members make cameos in side quests and story scenes as well. Building friendships with characters through questing and giving gifts rewards you with a character emblem, and by placing it on a “community board†that represents a group of Goku's companions, you can earn assorted boosts to combat, item-gathering, cooking, and other adventurous pursuits. But these rewards are only part of what makes DBZ: Kakarot's adventuring feel satisfying. Dragon Ball Z is a series where character relationships and interactions are important, and that really comes through in the non-combat story bits. You see Piccolo warm up to young Gohan, Chi Chi's tough mother role, the fighters bonding outside of battle, teenage Gohan doing his goofy Great Saiyaman shtick, and much more. Even relatively minor characters like Yajirobe, Launch, and Puar have side quests that showcase funny interactions, silly scenarios, and genuinely sad and touching moments. Seeing so many DBZ characters given their moment to shine is great, and it helps you forget that a lot of the side quests are fairly typical RPG kill-these-enemies or collect-this-item affairs. As someone who thinks some of the “filler†and comedy episodes of DBZ are among the series' best, I really appreciated an increased focus on these stories in DBZ: Kakarot.Of course, it wouldn't be Dragon Ball Z without combat. While the 3D, action-driven combat takes some getting used to at first, once you've got a decent handle on the controls, you'll be flying around, shooting off ki blasts and Kamehamehas like a pro. You control a single character who has two basic attacks--up-close melee strikes and ranged ki blasts. If you have companions in the fight, the CPU will control them, and you can command them to make use of special attacks. Besides your basic strikes, you have several powerful special skills, a boost to get up close to the opponent, several defensive techniques to guard, dodge, and catch an attacking opponent off-guard, and even (eventually) the ability to transform into stronger forms. Many of these abilities cost ki, which can be charged mid-battle but leaves you vulnerable when doing so, making ki management very important. A tension gauge fills over time, and when it's full, you can send your warrior into a superpowered state where you can chain special attacks into each other, causing some serious devastation. It's an intriguing combat system, and the 3D aerial movement element is unique, but there's a lack of depth--most normal enemies and even a few bosses can be patterned to make fighting them much easier. On top of that, enemy variety outside of main story battles tends to be lacking, particularly the annoying cannon-fodder foes that will interrupt you during times when you just want to explore. But fighting still has some standout moments during big boss fights when enemies whip out massive, incredibly damaging energy attacks that force a rapid change in strategy. Overcoming some of the nastiest things Dragon Ball Z's iconic villains toss at you with skillful dodging and well-timed attacks is immensely satisfying, and it somewhat makes up for all of the combat time wasted punching the same robots over and over again.Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's modern, semi-open approach to telling the saga of DBZ--despite some minor issues--is a good one. Zooming around the environments and seeing the world up close is a blast, and it's great being able to interact with so many fun DBZ characters and see stories that usually get passed over for game adaptations. And even though combat can be a bit lacking, when the big battles happen, they feel suitably epic and engaging. If you're looking for an enjoyable way to see the life and times of adult Goku through a new perspective, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will grant your wish.Info from Gamespot.com

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Season 6 is officially underway. The new update is now open for PC players on the live servers, while console owners will have to wait until January 30 to check out the new additions.Among PUBG's many new additions is a brand-new map, Karakin. It's one of the game's smaller maps, said to introduce a "faster pace and higher tension" to the PUBG experience. The map, located off the Northern African coast, features wide-open and claustrophobic environments both above and below ground. PUBG calls Karakin an amalgam of Miramar and Sanhok, and it holds a maximum of 64 players at a time.Karakin also comes with a new environmental effect: The Black Zone. Exclusive to the rocky and sandy locale, Black Zones are randomly-targeted spots on the map that get destroyed by massive explosives. This cataclysmic event can utterly level the battlefield or leave areas totally untouched, but the end result is a complete change in map layout. And it all happens in real-time as the match progresses. If you happen to see a purple circle on the minimap, it's best you move locations. Check out Karakin in the screens below.Elsewhere in the patch, PUBG's sixth season brings two new usable items: a sticky bomb throwable (exclusive to Karakin) and the motor glider vehicle (available on Erangel and Miramar). The sticky bomb adds tactics similar to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, wherein certain walls and floors can be used as entry points with the sticky bomb's explosive power. And the moto glider introduces an aerial element, letting you and a friend drop bullets and bombs from the safety of the skies. The PUBG Season 6 patch notes are quite lengthy and come packed with a variety of changes and fixes. You can read all about the update below, which includes gameplay and sound improvements, matchmaking adjustments, details on the new Survivor Pass, and much more.Full PUBG Season 6 Patch NotesBlack Zone (Karakin Only)The Black Zone is designed to push players out of the safety of a building. The hazard is random: Towns and compounds can be undamaged, totally flattened, and everything in between. The mix of buildings and ruins evolves in real-time throughout the match: Meaning don't always expect that building you run to for cover to be there late in the match.Remember, if you hear the siren, and you are inside that purple circle on the minimap--evacuate!New Throwable: Sticky Bomb (Karakin Only)Certain walls and floors have breach points which can be destroyed with Sticky Bombs. This feature presents more tools for our players: For campers, it allows more sightlines/windows to be created. For squads going on the offensive; however, there are new options for storming buildings: "Do we blast in through the back of the building, or through the roof--maybe both?" The choice is yours! And for explorers, we've hidden many secret areas for those players with a spare Sticky Bomb or two, and a keen nose for loot.New Vehicle: Motor GliderMotor Glider is available on Erangel and Miramar. 10 Motor Gliders will spawn across the map each game, across 40 potential locations.Motor Glider has two seats: one for the pilot and one for the passenger who can shoot and use any weapon from the backseat. To take off, you must gain the necessary speed of 65 km/h then pitch up with the S key. You'll start to take off automatically once you hit 70 km/h.Motor Glider's fuel consumption rate is tied to the engine speed--the more throttle you apply, the faster you will run out of gas.Motor Glider will be spawned without gas. Fuel up before starting the engine. There's no maximum altitude you can reach, the sky is the limit! Netflix has just released its live-action series based on The Witcher and announced a second season incoming, but the company actually has another Witcher production in the works as well. An anime film, titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, is coming from the animation studio behind The Legend of Korra.A tweet from Netflix's geek-focused NX account said the story will cover a new threat facing the continent. The tweet also confirms that The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and writer Beau DeMayo are behind this production. However, it doesn't mention Geralt or actor Henry Cavill--though the "wolf" in the title would seem to be a reference to Geralt's nickname. The rumors are true, a new Witcher story is in the works! The anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will take us back to a new threat facing the Continent. Brought to you by the Witcher team @LHissrich and @BeauDeMayo, and Studio Mir the studio behind Legend of Korra. — NX (@NXOnNetflix) January 22, 2020Studio Mir, the South Korean animation studio known for the Nickelodeon hit The Legend of Korra, has previously worked with Netflix on Voltron: Legendary Defender.Netflix has stated it's happy with the success of The Witcher, calling it a massive new franchise thanks to a big performance in 2019. Hissrich said on Twitter that she's been keeping the anime film a secret for over a year, so it was in production long before Netflix knew what it had a hit on its hands. The first season of The Witcher showed promise, but was held back by a confusing story structure, according to GameSpot's review. Though exact figures aren't available, a huge swath of the American public has ditched cable in favor of streaming services for their living room entertainment. As streaming services become more ubiquitous, with more networks and companies jumping in each year, it's easy to see a not-so-distant future where streaming services completely dominate home media. The days of Netflix merely complementing your cable package are gone. Now you have options galore, which is both good and bad. While subscribing to one streaming service can be viewed as a bargain, as you rack up subscriptions the combined price can start to look a lot like the cable bill that you were happy to ditch. Even just a combination of the most popular services--Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Prime Video--will cost you $30 a month on the low end.To help you make the best decisions, we've put together this handy guide outlining the best streaming services to consider in 2020. We weighed both cost and content and will continue to re-evaluate over time as services change and new options become available.Table of Contents [hide]NetflixHuluYouTube TVSlingDisney PlusAmazon Prime VideoHBO NowAppleTV PlusCBS All AccessShudderDC UniverseESPN PlusWWE NetworkCrunchyrollFunimationNetflixBest variety, most contentThe WitcherPrice: Basic - $9/month, Standard - $13/month, Premium - $16/monthNotable original content: Black Mirror, BoJack Horseman, The Haunting of Hill House, Stranger Things, The Witcher, Russian Doll, The Irishman, Ozark, Mindhunter, AggretsukoBottom line: If you can only subscribe to one streaming service, Netflix is the clear winner.Netflix is the reason competition in the streaming space exists. The online DVD retailer turned video streaming giant has had a far larger impact on the home media industry than any of the other services on this list. Even with its stranglehold over the streaming industry, Netflix hasn't rested on its laurels. It remains the most popular streaming service for a reason--well, many reasons. Netflix has the largest and most varied collection of programming of any of the services available today. Its library includes a diverse array of original television and movies and a bounty of cable shows and popular films, including a nice selection of great anime and even some original anime. It's a cliche, but Netflix really does have something for everyone. If you're a fan of superheroes, The Umbrella Academy and a slew of (now-canceled) Marvel shows are available to stream. If you want to watch some of the most innovative modern comedies, Russian Doll and I Think You Should Leave have you covered. If you like horror, The Haunting of Hill House is there to make you sleep with the lights on. True crime buffs can don their thinking caps during Making a Murderer. And it's the only place to watch Martin Scorsese's latest film, The Irishman. Netflix even has a dedicated section for children's TV shows and movies that's filled with enough animation to keep the kiddos content for the long haul. Anime fans can also enjoy some excellent original anime like Carole & Tuesday, Aggretsuko and Devilman Crybaby, and some popular shows like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death Note, and Fairy Tail.Netflix subscriptions start at $9 per month, which lets you watch on one screen at a time in standard definition. For $13 per month, two users can watch at once, and the resolution is bumped up to high definition. If you're sharing your subscription with your family and friends (everyone does it), the $16 premium subscription is the way to go, as it allows four users to watch simultaneously and supports 4K Ultra HD for compatible content. Hulu adds a significant number of episodes the day after they air on TV, making Hulu the natural choice for those who are hesitant to abandon traditional cable. In the same respect, Hulu is probably not the best bet for those who still have cable. While Hulu has some great original programming, including The Handmaid's Tale and Castle Rock, the brunt of the library features shows that you can easily find on TV each week or on demand. Hulu occasionally has some good movies to stream, but television is definitely the focus here.Hulu's cable TV content is extremely varied and includes shows from ABC, Adult Swim, Fox, FX, NBC, and many other networks. There are far too many shows to list here, but here's a snapshot of what Hulu has to offer when it comes to scripted shows: This Is Us, The Good Doctor, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Preacher, The Terror, and NOS4A2. Popular reality shows like The Bachelor and Survivor are also available. Hulu even has a nice collection of anime, including popular series like Naruto Shippuden, Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop, and Sailor Moon. For now, Hulu remains a great option for recent cord-cutters. And if you haven't cut the cord just yet, subscribing for a month or two to binge some of the original content is certainly worthwhile. Hulu subscriptions start at $6 per month. It's a bargain for sure, but the $6 tier has ads. For $11 per month, you can enjoy all of Hulu's content without ads.If you mainly use your cable subscription to watch sports or other live events like awards shows, the Hulu + Live TV package is a stellar alternative to cable. For $45, you get access to Hulu's streaming content and a ton of channels, including ESPN, FS1, and major news networks. Unlike Sling, YouTube TV comes with live-streaming of the four major TV networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Overall, it offers more than 70 channels, including all of the most popular news and sports networks.YouTube TV is a better service than Sling simply because it gives you more options. You'll pay for those added options, though. YouTube TV costs $50 per month. However, you can stream simultaneously on six devices, which means you can share your service (and split the cost!) with family and friends. Sling offers live TV streaming for more than 50 networks, including ESPN, TBS, TNT, FX, CNN, and many more. It also houses a library of on-demand TV shows and movies from its supported networks. What you won't find on Sling are major networks like ABC, Fox, CBS, and NBC.As a cable alternative, Sling is pricier than the more traditional streaming services on this list. There are three plans available: Sling Blue, Sling Orange, and Orange & Blue. Both Sling Blue and Sling Orange cost $20 per month. There's some crossover between the two plans in terms of channel offerings, so you'll have to compare the two to see which one has more of the channels you want. Alternatively, you can get all of Sling's live TV channels in the Orange & Blue plan for $35 per month. Sign up for Sling Disney PlusBest for kidsThe MandalorianPrice: $7/month, $70/yearNotable content: The Mandalorian, Forky Asks A Question, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, scores of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel moviesBottom line: Disney Plus is the best streaming service for kids and young adults who want to relive their childhoods.Disney Plus launched to much fanfare in November 2019 thanks to the debut of the first live-action Star Wars show, The Mandalorian, and an eclectic library filled with a treasure trove of Disney and Pixar movies. If you're mainly subscribing to a streaming service for your kids, Disney Plus is the way to go.Though Disney Plus is rather limited when it comes to fresh original content right now, there are plenty of TV shows in the works to get excited about, especially for Marvel fans. WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are slated to arrive in 2020, while Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk are on the docket for 2021. There's also the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series to look forward to.For now, the main draw of Disney Plus is its vast library of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars content. From classic Disney animated films like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King to Pixar hits like The Incredibles 2 and Wall-E to the first eight films in the Skywalker saga to the majority of the MCU movies, Disney Plus is brimming with popular content that is fun for the whole family. Disney Plus also has a collection of Fox content, including the first 30 seasons of The Simpsons and movies like Home Alone and The Sandlot.Disney Plus costs $6 per month or $70 per year ($5.83/month). We'd imagine that a sizable contingent of Amazon Prime members subscribed for the free one- or two-day shipping, not the huge library of movies and TV shows. But Prime Video is actually pretty darn good.Prime Video features a growing collection of original content, including standout TV shows like The Expanse, The Boys, Fleabag, and The Man In The High Castle. It also receives movies distributed by Amazon Studios such as The Big Sick, Manchester by the Sea, and Beautiful Boy.While Amazon Prime doesn't have quite as robust of a library of network content, it does have some of the best shows released over the last two decades. HBO hits like Six Feet Under, The Wire, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and Curb Your Enthusiasm (through Season 8) are all available to stream. Prime Video also houses some excellent network TV, including The X-Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Americans, and Justified. A kids' section features a fairly large selection of both live-action and animated shows and movies. Prime Video also has a nice selection of anime, including Vinland Saga, Psycho-Pass 3, and Made in Abyss.Amazon Prime costs $119 per year (roughly $10/month). You can skip Prime shipping perks and subscribe to Prime Video for only $9/month, but what you lose out on is far more valuable than the minuscule savings. Prime Video is great, but if you already subscribe to Netflix, you'll find a lot of overlap with the exception of the HBO backlist. With that said, we recommend Prime Video for those who will make use of their Amazon Prime membership. Sign up for Prime Video HBO NowBest original seriesWatchmenPrice: $15/monthNotable original content: Succession, Barry, Insecure, Watchmen, His Dark Materials, Big Little Lies, Westworld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, True DetectiveBottom line: HBO Now is home to some of the best TV, but it's a service you can go without until the next season of your favorite show releases. It's no secret that HBO produces some of the very best shows on television. In the 2000s, The Wire and The Sopranos defined TV. In the 2010s, Game of Thrones captivated millions of viewers each week. Just last year, HBO released arguably the best show of the year in Watchmen and pushed one of the best ongoing dramas, Succession, to new heights. HBO also excels at comedies, with the wholly engrossing Barry leading the pack and the pivotal Curb Your Enthusiasm in its tenth season.HBO Now is an excellent service, but it's quite pricey and, frankly, limited when it comes to content. Yes, it has the entire back catalogue of HBO shows and a rotating stable of films, many of which released within the past year or so, but there's only so much you need to watch on HBO.It's easy to recommend HBO Now, because the ongoing original content is top-notch. However, the smart play is to keep your subscription active when a show you like has a new season. There's no sense in having an active HBO Now subscription if all you're waiting for is Season 3 of Westworld. This logic may change when HBO Max, an expanded streaming service from HBO, launches in May. HBO Max will replace HBO Now and feature all of HBO's programming and plenty more, including South Park, Doctor Who, Friends, and every Studio Ghibli film. New content will also be released on HBO Max. The lineup includes DC properties such as Green Lantern, Doom Patrol, and Aquaman; Snowcrash, an adaptation of Neal Stephenson's novel of the same name; and Dune: The Sisterhood, a spin-off series centered around Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel. Sign up for HBO Now AppleTV PlusBest at bringing Steve Carell back to TVThe Morning ShowPrice: $5/month, $50/yearNotable original content: The Morning Show, For All Mankind, Dickinson, Servant, Snoopy in SpaceBottom line: AppleTV Plus has a lot of star power, but it's limited on content.AppleTV Plus launched the same month as Disney Plus. Unlike Disney Plus, however, AppleTV Plus is entirely focused on new original content. Though that fact makes AppleTV Plus interesting, it also means that it's low on content at the moment. However, Apple has secured big names to both star in its productions and work on them behind the scenes. For instance, The Morning Show, which follows a group of newscasters, stars Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, and Reece Witherspoon. Servant, an unsettling show about hiring a babysitter to take care of a doll, comes from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan. In addition to series aimed at adult viewers, Apple TV Plus has a new Peanuts show called Snoopy in Space and multiple Sesame Workshop in the works. AppleTV Plus will also soon have its own Silicon Valley-esque show, dubbed Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, set in a video game development studio starring Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame.AppleTV Plus is worth checking out, especially at the reasonable price of $5 per month or $50 per year. Since the service is so new, it's too early to say if it will be something you'll want to hold onto for the long haul, though. Sign up for Apple TV Plus CBS All AccessBest for Star Trek fansStar Trek: PicardPrice: Starting at $6/monthNotable original content: Star Trek: Picard, The Good Fight, Star Trek: Discovery, Why Women Kill, No Activity, Stephen King's The Stand (upcoming)Bottom line: CBS All Access has some original programming, but it's really geared toward those who want access to CBS' historical library.CBS All Access has been around since 2014. It started out mainly as a place to stream both ongoing and old CBS shows. While its library is still primarily comprised of shows you'd watch on CBS, the service now has a growing assortment of original shows, including the new Star Trek: Picard, Why Women Kill, and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's beloved novel, The Stand.CBS All Access' slate of original programming probably isn't worth subscribing to if you have cable, though. It's best to look at CBS All Access as another subscription that can be dropped and re-added as new exclusive shows arrive on the service. That said, if you do not have cable and want to watch current CBS shows, CBS All Access is your best bet. Unsurprisingly, CBS doesn't license many of its shows to services like Netflix and Hulu. You'll also be able to watch CBS sports content with CBS All Access, including NFL games and March Madness.CBS All Access with ads is $6 per month, while the ad-free subscription costs $10 per month. Catering specifically to fans of horror, Shudder's library has grown substantially over the years. In 2019, Shudder released Creepshow, a horror anthology series and stellar follow-up to the classic film directed by George Romero and written by Stephen King. Season 2 is currently in the works. Though Shudder is still finding its footing with original programming, there's no denying that it offers the widest collection of classic and contemporary horror.Shudder features the expected classics like Psycho, Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Birds, Phantasm, and Night of the Living Dead while also housing a substantial library of horror films and shows you may have never heard of before. Yes, giants like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video have some horror, but their selections are nothing compared to Shudder.Shudder costs $6 per month or $57 for an annual membership ($4.75 per month). To help you find the type of horror movies and shows you're looking for, Shudder has a huge list of curated collections to browse. Most notably, DC Universe has Titans, a mature, live-action follow-up to Teen Titans, and Doom Patrol, which moves into its second season later this year.Though DC Universe doesn't have very many original shows at this time, it does have an impressive back catalogue. You'll find a ton of animated Batman movies, including Batman: Hush, Batman Ninja, and Batman: Year One. Superman is also prominently represented with The Death of Superman, Reign of Supermen, and the 1978 movie starring Christopher Reeve. Animated shows like Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Justice League, The New Adventures of Superman can also be streamed in their entirety. DC Universe subscribers get daily update videos courtesy of DC Daily, which chronicles all of the DC news you need to know.DC Universe is fairly pricey at $8 per month, but a $75 annual subscription can save you some cash. Naturally, DC Universe is geared toward dedicated fans of DC Comics. Subscribers also get the added bonus of having access to select digital issues of comic books. Since HBO Max will also have DC shows (such as the previously exclusive Doom Patrol), you could get your DC fix elsewhere. However, we'd definitely recommend DC Universe for those who are fans of DC's animated shows and movies. Sign up for DC Universe ESPN PlusBest for sports enthusiasts30 For 30Price: $5/month, $50/yearNotable content: 30 For 30, Peyton's Places, NBA Rooks, Detail, ESPN FC, UFC EmbeddedBottom line: ESPN Plus doesn't replace cable, but it still has its positives. Before diving into what ESPN Plus is, it's important to relay what it is not. ESPN Plus doesn't give subscribers access to live sports and events airing on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNews. That means you won't get to watch NBA, NFL, or MLB games. However, ESPN Plus does have out of market MLS games, tennis tournaments, UFC events, and more niche sports (at least in the US) like cricket and rugby.ESPN Plus also has a number of exclusive shows such as Peyton's Places and Detail, which is hosted by former NBA star Kobe Bryant. It also has the entire library of ESPN's riveting 30 For 30 documentaries.ESPN Plus is more of a supplemental service for the average sports fan. At $5 per month or $50 per year, the service has a friendly price, especially for tennis and soccer fans. Sign up for ESPN Plus WWE NetworkBest for WWE fansWWE NetworkPrice: $10/monthNotable content: All pay-per-view events, 205 Live, NXTBottom line: For the pay-per-view events alone, WWE Network is worth the cost.Pay-per-view WWE events like Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, and WrestleMania typically cost around $50 through your cable provider. The WWE Network costs $10 per month and lets you watch every pay-per-view event. It's not hard to see the value in the WWE's streaming service, even if you only care about a select few pay-per-view events per year. But the WWE Network has so much more than the latest pay-per-view events. It has almost the entire back catalogue of WWE, WCW, and ECW pay-per-views as well as many behind-the-scenes shows, documentaries about your favorite wrestlers, and even some reality shows. Even if it didn't include access to current PPV events, WWE Network still has enough content to satisfy hardcore wrestling fans.Whether you're an enthusiast or simply someone who watches WrestleMania each year, the WWE Network is a worthwhile investment.
