Former Doctor Who Showrunner Russell T. Davies Returns For Next Season

Screenwriter Russell T. Davies will be coming back to Doctor Who as showrunner for episodes airing 2023 to celebrate the long-running series' 60th anniversary. The BBC announced that Davies the news, plus that Davies will be helming the series for the foreseeable future after that season.

Davies will succeed showrunner Chris Chibnall, who will leave the series in 2022. Davies was instrumental in Doctor Who's 2005 revival, but left the show in 2009. Says Chibnall in a release, "It's monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who's 60th anniversary will see one of Britain's screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him--Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let's be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead."

While there's still no official premiere date for Season 13 of Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker will be returning as the Thirteenth Doctor in 2021. A trailer released during Comic-Con 2021 promises that the upcoming episodes will be both ambitious and action-packed. Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) is joining the series for Season 13. Also joining is comedian John Bishop, who plays Dan Lewis, the newest addition to the Doctor's TARDIS crew. They'll be traveling with the Doctor and her companion Yaz (Mandip Gill) throughout space and time.
